German culture and Nazi atrocities – how is this possible?

Today I came across the Ellopos blog written by someone of Greek heritage.  This blogger finds it hard to understand how the same ethnic group that produced Beethoven could also have committed the world’s worst atrocities during World War II.

Here is a quote from the Ellospos blog:

First thing we learn, then, is this strange conclusion – that the same people and the same culture which nurtured Beethoven, was also able to construct gas chambers for the mass extermination of “inferior races”. Thanks to Germany we know that the same person who enjoys Brahms and Schubert, can also enjoy a bath with soap made of human flesh.

How is this possible?
