Bill Maher: “Waffen SS Viking Division soldiers killed Jews in Hungary”

Last night as I watched the HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher,”  I heard Maher say that Waffen SS soldiers in the Viking Division had “slaughtered Jews in Hungary.”  The discussion at that point was about Rich Iott, the Republican candidate who is challenging Democrat Marcy Kaptur in Ohio’s Ninth District.  Iott is a member of a group of Ohio World War II reenactors and he has been known to dress up as an SS soldier in the 5th SS Wiking (Viking in English) Panzer Division.  Journalist Josh Green was a guest on the show and he introduced the subject.

The photo below shows Viking reenactors with an arrow pointing to Iott in an SS uniform.

I was amazed to hear Bill Maher say that Waffen SS soldiers had “slaughtered Jews in Hungary.”  Did he know that, right off the top of his head, or did he do some research before the show?

The Hungarian Jews were rounded up in May 1944 and sent to Auschwitz to be killed; you can read all about the Hungarian Jews and the Holocaust on my website here.

Germany and Hungary were allies in World War II, and Hungarian soldiers were fighting in Waffen SS divisions.  The Waffen SS Viking Division fought in battle on the Eastern front during World War II, so why would Viking Division soldiers have been killing Jews in Hungary?

To find the answer, I had to do some research myself, so first I got out my book about the SS divisions, entitled Hell on the Eastern Front.  I skimmed through all the pages that mentioned the Viking Division but found nothing about killing Jews in Hungary, nor even fighting in Hungary.

Then I searched the web and found this quote here:

A 90-year-old former member of an elite Waffen SS unit has been charged with killing 58 Hungarian Jews who were forced to kneel beside an open pit before being shot and tumbling into their mass grave.
The man, named in the German press as Adolf Storms, becomes the latest pensioner to be prosecuted for alleged Nazi war crimes as courts rush to secure convictions before the defendants become too infirm and the witness testimony too unreliable.
Mr Storms was found by accident last year, as part of a research project by Andreas Forster, a 28-year-old student at the University of Vienna.
The case against him was led by Ulrich Maass who is also the prosecutor in the trial of Heinrich Boere, 88, who is accused of shooting three Dutch resistance fighters.

Note that Adolf Storms was charged with killing “Hungarian Jews,” not with killing “Jews in Hungary.”

According to this website, Storms died before he could be brought to trial:

Soldiers from the Wiking division were involved in the killing of Hungarian Jews in March/April 1945. (10) On 17 November 2009 Adolf Storms was charged with the murder of 58 Hungarian Jewish forced labourers near Deutsch Schuetzen in Austria on 29 March 1945 but he died before he could be brought to trial. (11)

The Viking Division was fighting in Austria at the end of World War II, and again, it was “Hungarian Jews” who were killed, not “Jews in Hungary.”

I also found this information here:

As with his other formations, Heinrich Himmler had decreed that SS Viking should not fight in the front lines. Rather, it would be deployed against “partisans,” a code phrase widely understood to mean Jews, Party activists and other “undesirables.” The division moved out in Army Group South’s second echelon, and only saw its first action against on 29 June at Tarnopol. Ten days later, its supply column proved themselves true SS men, participating in the massacre of about 60 Jews in the Lviv ghetto.

Why only 60 Jews?  Why not kill all the Jews in the ghetto?  Could it be that the 60 who were killed were fighting as “partisans”?  If these 60 Jews were, in fact, fighting as partisans, they were “illegal combatants” under the Geneva Convention of 1929 and it was legal to “massacre” them.

Note that the quote says that “partisans” was a “code phrase” for Jews and “undesirables.”  The Germans always used code words and euphemisms in World War II, never really using any words that could be used to convict them of war crimes.  Did the Germans really anticipate that they would lose World War II and be charged with war crimes at Nuremberg, so that’s why they always used code words and euphemisms?

Still, I am impressed that Bill Maher apparently did some research so that he could bring up this incident, involving the Viking Division of the SS, in his continuing effort to discredit candidates in the coming election, just as he smeared Christine O’Donnell by dredging up an old clip of her talking on his show about being a witch.

I always liked Bill Maher before he started his campaign against conservative political candidates in the coming elections.

You can read more about this here. Note that the author has trouble distinguishing between the Nazi (National Socialist) political party and the German military.  The Huffington Post made the same mistake, which you can read here.  The SS men were not necessarily in the Nazi political party.

  1. “The “Hungarian Jews” were sent to Auschwitz and killed in ten week’s time”.
    Further Glory!
I really appreciate your humor. 400,000 Jews killed in ten weeks, is an absolute record, even by the Auschwitz standards. I am not sure, why the Nazis have decided to exterminate them first, while there were many others in the camp already waiting for their portion of Zyklon B. Oh well, nobody can explain the soul of a “Nazi”.
However, we could understand the Hungarians who decided to protect themselves from those who are so proud of destruction of Biblical Amalek. Maybe after reading The Old Testament, the Hungarians and other nations of Europe, decided not to take any chances?

  2. Let me do some explanations here:
The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was one of the elite Panzer divisions of the thirty eight Waffen SS divisions. It was recruited from foreign volunteers, from Scandinavia, Finland, Estonia, The Netherlands, and Belgium under the command of German officers. During the course of World War II, the division progressed from a motorised infantry division to a Panzer division.
This was an originally designed “international” division, which had embraced the diversity of members of SS.
As a part of Operation Konrad I, the 5 SS Division Wiking was committed to action on 1 January 1945, fighting alongside the 3 SS Division Totenkopf. Near Tata, the advance columns of 5 SS Division Wiking attacked the Fourth Guards Tank Army. A heavy battle ensued, with the 5 SS Division Wiking and the 3 SS Division Totenkopf destroying many of the Red Armies tanks. In three days their panzer spearheads had driven 45 kilometers over rugged terrain, over half the distance from the start point to Budapest. The Soviets maneuvered forces to block the advance, and they barely managed to halt the advance at Bicske, only 28 kilometres from Budapest.
Gille pulled the 5 SS Division Wiking out of the line and moved it to the south of Esztergom, near the Danube bend. The second relief attempt, to be known as Operation Konrad II, got under way on 7 January. In atrocious conditions, the 5 SS Division Wiking advanced southwards towards Budapest. By 12 January, the SS Panzergrenadier Regiment Westland had reached Pilisszentkereszt, barely 20 kilometers from Buda. That morning the panzergrenadiers spotted the church spires and turrets of the distinctive Budapest skyline poking through the morning fog. Despite its success, they had overextended and were vulnerable to attack, unable to exploit its breakthrough and eventually ordered to pull back and regroup.
A third attempt, Operation Konrad III, launched in cooperation with the veteran III.Panzerkorps took place 100 kilometers to the south. This attack resulted in a 15 mile gap in the Soviet lines and the destruction of the 135th Rifle Corps. Only the quick redeployment of more troops by the Russians prevented a German breakthrough. By the end of January the 5 SS Division Wiking and 3 SS Division Totenkopf had suffered almost 8,000 casualties, including over 200 officers.
At the beginning of February, the besieged forces capitulated, and the 5 SS Division Wiking was ordered west to Lake Balaton where Obergruppenführer Sepp Dietrich’s 6th SS Panzer Army was preparing for another offensive.
You see, how busy they were? When did they have time to kill Jews? Bill Maher is another phony idiot like Jon Stewart. They just clowns and needs to be considered as such.
These freaks are not a match to the real heroes like Sepp Dietrich. Felix Steiner or Herbert Otto Gille

    • Excellent response. You know how they like to rinse every last drop off pity out of the idiotic masses.

  3. I don’t understand your distinction between “Hungarian Jews,” and “Jews in Hungary.”” “Hungarian Jews” means Jews with Hungarian nationality. “Jews in Hungary” implies Jews living in Hungary, most of whom would have Hungarian citizenship. Are you saying that the SS were only accused of killing “Hungarian Jews” as if this were more acceptable, and that Bill Maher was incorrect in saying the SS killed “Jews in Hungary”.
You said “the SS were not necessarily in the Nazi political party.” The SS was the military branch of the Nazi party. It was part of the Nazi party and all it members had to swear allegiance to the head of the Nazi party. Does it really matter if some of them had forgotten to pay their membership fees, if they had all voluntarily sworn to fight and die for its principles?
I am now fan of Israel either. Its early political and military leaders were pretty much all the terrorists. Menachem Begin for example was a leader of Irgun an off shoot of the Jewish paramilitary organization Haganah which blew up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem 1946 killing 91 people and injuring 46. Undoubtedly Palestine has undergone ethnic cleansing of Palestinians since that time. In much the same way North America was cleansed of Native Americans by Europeans. Perhaps that’s why the US is such a strong supporter of Israel. The shared common value of just taking what you want no matter who it belongs to.

    • The job of the Waffen-SS was to fight in battle; they fought mainly on the Eastern front. The Wiking Division was a Panzer Division, which means they fought in tank battles. The job of the Waffen-SS Panzer Divisions was not killing Jews, and especially not going to Hungary to kill Jews. The “Hungarian Jews” were sent to Auschwitz and killed in ten week’s time.

If there were Jews fighting as partisans in Hungary when the Wiking Division went there to fight in the battle to take back Budapest, some Jewish partisans might have been killed by Wiking Division soldiers, but if Maher wanted to bring this up, he should have explained that the Jews who were killed in Hungary were fighting as “Illegal combatants.” When Maher said that the Wiking Division “slaughtered Jews in Hungary,” this was very misleading, and he only said this to attack a political candidate, not in an attempt to convey some information.

The Wiking SS Division was composed of soldiers from many countries who volunteered to fight on the German side because they wanted to fight against Communism. Only German citizens could be members of the Nazi party. Some of the Waffen-SS soldiers were as young as 17 when they volunteered to join the SS; they were too young to join the Nazi political party. So SS and Nazi are not interchangeable terms.

All of the German soldiers, including Wehrmacht soldiers and Luftwaffe pilots, had to swear an oath of allegiance to Hitler as the leader of their country.

    • I forgot to mention that the SS was originally formed as a “protection squad” which acted as body guards for Hitler and other Nazis when they made campaign speeches. The Nazi party members needed protection from the Communists who would attack them when they spoke during election campaigns.

  4. Quote from that website:
“After participating in the drive on Rostov, SS Viking spent the winter of 1941-42 on the line of the Mius River just north of the Black Sea coast.”
I have happened to know a person who was originally from that area and lived under occupation of “SS tank units” (he did not know the name of the division). This person (Albert) was a friend of my parents and told numerous stories about his personal experience as a child living in the same house with “Wiking” officers. Albert, his mother and his siblings were not ethnic Germans, but German names such as “Friedrich”, “Alfred” and “Albert” were quite popular in USSR before WWII. After a dozen SS officers and soldiers were quartered in Albert’s house, the family moved to basement. The Germans were bringing food every day for themselves and the family. Albert’s mother was preparing food for Germans as well as herself and her children. Albert told us that he still remembers the taste of chocolate, which Germans were giving him everyday. The Germans told Albert’s “mamka” (broken Russian for “mom”) that she needs to raise healthy children.

The family had kept the secret, that their husband and father was a ranking officer of the Red Army, as well as several other members of the family. However, before retreating from that area, one of the senior SS officers called the mother and told her that they knew it all along. He also revealed the name of snitch (a neighbor) who betrayed the family. There were no repercussions from Germans against the family whatsoever. After the Red Army regained that area, Albert’s mother reported that neighbor to military counterintelligence SMERSH (Death to the Spies) based on the information she received from the ” Wiking” officer. The neighbor was executed for treason.

  5. The statement that having a Jewish parent takes away objectivity is nonsense. I am a Jew and do not universally condemn Waffen SS soldiers as Nazi murderers.

    Comment by tampalam — October 10, 2010 @ 11:58 am

    • You are a brainwashed Jew who thinks all Nazis are murderers, or thinks you can call all Nazis murderers without giving it a second thought.

Did your father lose relatives in the holocaust or in the war? Also, any “atrocities” committed by Nazis are mild compared to the atrocities committed by Jews against Germans at the end of the war, after the war, and the blind robbery they’re committing up to today in demanding eternal reparations for their alleged suffering. Add to that the atrocities the Jews committed against their neighbors that are written about in the Old Testament of the Bible, and down through the ages whenever they got a chance.

Further add what the Jews are doing today against the Palestinians — horrific atrocities! The only thing Jews like you can do against all that is to keep everyone focused on the Nazis, who were in power only 12 years.

Give us a break with your effort to try to present yourself as fair. It would be nice if you were, but you have a long way to go.

  6. Although I despise Nazi ideology and the atrocities many nazis committed, I believe that the broad definition of Waffen SS soldiers as war criminals is unsubstantiated. Many were selected from regular Army units because they were outstanding soldiers. Not all of them even knew of the killing of civilians by some SS units. My father lost relatives in the holocaust and I have some relatives living in the US today who fled Austria just prior to the Anschluss because they feared the coming repression of Jews. I am by no means defending any Nazis. I simply feel that bearing false witness is wrong.

  7. Quote from a book By Mike Bennighof, Ph.D.

“Throughout the rest of July the division advanced into Ukraine and participated in several more massacres: over 400 Jews in Zhitomir, and over 100 more in Radomyschl”. “\

    • You quoted from the same web site that I did —
      http://www.avalanchepress.com/SSViking.php

The web site also has this quote: “recruiters managed to sign up experienced officers from the Dutch, Belgian, Danish and Norwegian armies, some of whom had fought against the Germans the previous year.”

The first sentence on the web site about Benninghof’s book is this: “During the winter of 1940-1941, the Waffen SS began to form a division of Western and Northern European volunteers.” The Viking division was made up of 60% non-Germans by the end of the war.

In this paragraph, Bennighof shows his anti-German bias:

“As with his other formations, Heinrich Himmler had decreed that SS Viking should not fight in the front lines. Rather, it would be deployed against “partisans,” a code phrase widely understood to mean Jews, Party activists and other “undesirables.” The division moved out in Army Group South’s second echelon, and only saw its first action against on 29 June at Tarnopol. Ten days later, its supply column proved themselves true SS men, participating in the massacre of about 60 Jews in the Lviv ghetto.”

His facetious phrase “true SS men” shows his bias, as does his opinion that the Viking division used “code words” and his use of the word “undesirables.” A person with a German name who writes in this fashion is probably Jewish and cannot write objectively about the German military.

Bill Maher probably used this same web site, or the book by Bennighof, for his information. As the child of one Jewish parent, Maher cannot be objective either.

  8. SS members were not necessarily members of the National Socialist Party? True but how many were not 1 or was it 2? What about all the Oaths to Hitler and the fanatical devotion to him. So to say that they were not members is ridiculous they were far more fanatical than many members

    Comment by Andrew Jordan — October 9, 2010 @ 10:54 pm

    • There were many divisions of the SS that were composed of men from other countries besides Germany. In the Viking Divison, there were many non-Germans. The SS men from other countries were not members of the Nazi party. Many high ranking SS men were not members of the party, as for example, Joaquin Peiper, who was not a party member, even when he was Himmler’s adjutant. All members of the German military, including the regular Army men had to swear an oath of loyalty to Hitler. People in America had the same devotion to Roosevelt and the American soldiers were fanatical in killing German and Japanese POWs.

  9. You liked Bill Maher because you thought he was funny and fighting war and corruption, eh? Now you’ve found out he’s just another Jew working for the Tribe.

Yeah, I used to like him too, but it’s been quite a few years since I changed my mind. Funny how that happens.
