Block 10, where Dr. Mengele did his sadistic experiments at Auschwitz

Block 10 on the left, Block 11 on the right, Black wall in the center at Auschwitz main camp

Dr. Josef Mengele was the doctor for the Gypsy camp at Auschwitz II, aka Birkeanu, and later the doctor for the women’s camp at Birkenau.  Today, I read this here:  “Block 10 in Auschwitz I, which is currently closed to the public, is where Dr Josef Mengele – or Dr Death – carried out sadistic human experiments.”

There was a hospital at Auschwitz-Birkenau, but apparently it wasn’t good enough for Dr. Death who traveled to the main camp to do his sadistic experiments.

Windows of Block 10 at Auschwitz are blocked out

Strangely, Block 10 is closed to the public and the windows are blocked so that no one can see inside.  I will probably never return to see Auschwitz again because of the huge crowds of tourists, but if they ever open up Block 10, I will make it a point to get there ASAP.  I want to see the instruments of torture used by “the surgeon of Birkenau,” as Dr. Josef Mengele is called.

After World War II ended, the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex was in the hands of the Soviet Union; the Soviets released DOCUMENT 008-USSR, Report by the Soviet War Crimes Commission, 6 May 1945.  The quote below is from this document:

Sterilization experiments were performed on women in the camp hospital division of Auschwitz camp. 400 women prisoners were housed in Block 10 of the camp, and simultaneously subjected to sterilization experiments with x-rays, and then by removal of the ovaries; the neck of the uterus was infected with cancer, experiments were performed to induce premature birth artificially and to test contrast substances, as well as to test x-ray exposure of the uterus. In Block 28, doctors tested methods of artificially wounding the skin with kerosine oil, various salts, pastes, and powders. They also used Arichink to study artificially induced jaundice. These experiments were led by the German, Dr. Emil KOSCHUB.

Dr. Josef Mengele is not mentioned at all in the document about the war crimes committed at Auschwitz-Birkenau.  The quote below is also from the Soviet Document:

The former inmate M. HAUSER (Paris, Citemilion 9), testified:

“In Auschwitz, we were housed in Block 10. The reason why we were housed in this block was unknown to us. It contained a hospital division, although we were all entirely healthy women. In Block 10, they took a syringe full of blood from me, I don’t know for what purpose. At the end of August 1943, I was taken to the operating room, received an anaesthetic, and an operation was performed on my sexual organs. The operation was performed by a prisoner, Dr. SAMUEL, under the leadership and instruction of the German, Dr. WIRTZ. After the operation, I was sick for 11 months in Block 10. Among those who were subjected to the sterilization operation was a Jewish woman named Bella, from Greece, whose last name I can no longer remember. After she was x-rayed, she was operated on. She received an abdominal incision. After the operation, she got well and her abdomen healed. The German doctor Dr. SCHUMANN came to Block 10 to examine her, and took Bella away to Block 28. There he made a second incision, this time in a sideways direction. I myself saw the criss-cross incision. Within a few days of the second operation, Bella died.”

Entrance to Block 10 is closed to tourists

For over 50 years, tourists at Auschwitz were told that the gas chamber was original, not a reconstruction by the Soviet Union.  Now visitors are told the truth, that the gas chamber is a reconstruction.

For years, tourists were not allowed inside the Sauna building at Birkenau.  In 2005, it was finally opened to the public.

Will Block 10 ever be opened to the public?  What is so horrible inside this building that tourists are not allowed to see it?  I suspect that Block 10 was a modern hospital with the latest in medical equipment, used for the purpose of saving lives, and that is why it must be kept hidden from the public.

See if you can spot the mistakes in this quote from the Soviet document:

1) the Germans exterminated over four million citizens of the Soviet Union, Poland, France, Belgium, Holland, Czechoslovakia, Roumania, Hungary, and other countries by shooting and monstrous tortures in Auschwitz camp.

2) Germany professors and doctors performed so-called medical experiments on living men. women, and children in the camp. Auschwitz camp by far exceeded all hitherto known death camps in the refinement of its methods — in technical organization, in the number of victims, and in the cruelty of the means with which the people were killed. Auschwitz camp contained gas chambers and crematoria, and surgical stations and laboratories, all aimed at the extermination of human beings. The Germans called the gas chambers “Baths for Special Purposes”. The entrance to the “baths” bore the sign “To the Disinfection”; the exit “entry to the bathhouse”. Thus, the people intended for death went unsuspectingly into the room “for disinfection”, and undressed; they were then driven into the “Bath for Special Purposes”, and killed with “Zyklon” poison. Special hospitals, surgical blocks, laboratories, and other installations were erected in the camp — not to heal men, but to kill them. German professors and doctors performed mass experiments on completely healthy women and children: sterilization of women and castration of men (mass experiments on artificial excitement (sic) of cancer, typhus and malaria, experiments on the effects of poisons on living people.

  1. Did Mengele find a cure for Noma?

Official record says the experiment was never ended but survivor statements say that he did find a cure and killed everyone involved and that the cure was antibiotics plus nutrition supplementation.

  2. Mengele never did experiments in Block 10 in the main camp at Auschwitz. The doctors who did experiments at jewish women in block 10: Carl Clauberg, Horst Schumann, Eduard Wirths, Bruno Weber, August Münch. Also August Hirt participated and “got” 29 women (and 57 men from a men hospital at Auschwitz) who have been killed for his “sceleton collection of Jews” in the Reichsuniversität Straßburg.
I have been in Block 10 as a researcher. It is empty. Nothing is inside. If you are interested in more details and if you can understand german, read: Hans-Joachim Lang: Die Frauen von Block 10. Medizinische Experimente in Auschwitz. Hamburg 2011.

    • In which camp areas (of A-I or A-II) did Mengele perform his experiments? Child survivors of his experiments often describe being taken from their “residence” in A-II, by car or ambulance, to another place, but it’s not really clear if there was an area in A-II where this occurred or if it was, in fact, in A-I. I’ve never seen it specifically stated on any maps of either camp, where the twins (and or other children) were housed, and where Mengele’s “offices” were. If anyone knows (and can provide links or documentation to that effect) please let me know, as I’m currently researching these details for a book. Thank you!

    • How do you know Mengele did not experiment in block 10? All my reading suggests that he did.

  3. Why would executioners face and shoot away from a backstop meant to catch their bullets?

    Comment by Eric Hunt — October 17, 2011 @ 11:57 am

    • Mr. Hunt
I can only guess, as the Genickschuss position in Auschwitz was performed while the victim was kneeling and the shot was fired from a distance of not more than one meter (or less) at an angle of 45 degree, thus going into the ground. Any missed bullet or penetrating the scull, although only of low velocity could easily ricochet from the wall. The bullets from memory of the Walther PKK was small at 6.35 mm, this was the standard pistol used by the SS.
Execution by Genickschuss in Dachau were always done in the open without a backstop. Only Buchenwald had specially built chambers that aimed directly at the neck via a slit through the wall. Auschwitz had no such facilities.

    • There would not have been many bullets that hit the backstop. The executions were done by a shot in the neck from several inches away. I don’t think that the executioners had their backs to the Black Wall. There was not much danger of a revolt because only three prisoners were led out at a time. The rest of the prisoners who were awaiting execution were in prison cells in Block 11. The Black Wall was made of logs and covered by cork. It would have stopped any bullets from hitting the brick wall.

      • It is rather naive to assume that victims to be shot went to their execution like sheep to the slaughter, there were struggles and resistance when they were forced down into a kneeling position before a shot could be fired. SS men did get injured not only by the inmates but by missed shots as well The whole procedure had a demoralizing effect and was one of the reasons that this method of execution was stopped.
With the law change in Germany regarding the Holocaust, for my contacts this subject is now closed and I am unable to get any more details from those that were there, the only comment I receive is, that these eye witness stories appearing in America are full of “shivers” and have very little credence any where else!
        Kind Regards

    Herewith some excerpts in my Blog on Medical Experiments based on German research;
In late 1942 Dr Clauberg began in barrack 30 within the women’s camp at Birkenau B Ia to test his method of operation without sterilization. From April 1943 Clauberg was assisted by Johannes Goebel and continued his activities in Block 10 of Auschwitz. Between 150-400 Jewesses of various nationalities have been subjected to this method of intra-uterine injection of a caustic substance which caused the inflammation of the fallopian tubes and became impermeable. Side effects of the painful procedure such as peritonitis or general sepsis often lead to death. Clauberg’s test station was placed in May 1944 into Block I of the new women’s camp in the protective custody camp extension, from January1945, he continued his activities in the camp
In another method who worked from November 1942, was Dr. Horst Schumann, who had been in the Euthanasia facilities in Grafeneck and Pirna-Sunstone and murdered “incurably ill” patients and then participated in the Action 14f13. In Auschwitz, he tried a method by using X-rays on men and women to make them infertile. Schumann worked in the barrack 30 of the women’s camp Birkenau B Ia were under his supervision male and female prisoners were surgically castrated (147) [I doubt that women can be surgically castrated it is more likely it was Oophorectomy(Hysterectomy) when both ovaries are removed sic] . Few survived the estimated 1,000 victims of the experiments of Clauberg and Schumann.
The person with two doctorals (medicine and philosophy), SS Major Josef Mengele was a practicing leading researcher in the physiology of dwarfism in Auschwitz. Mengele was from May 1943 in Auschwitz and did service until November 1943 as Lagerarzt (Camp Doctor) at Birkenau. He was interested in an experimental station in the gypsy camp where he also studied the Noma Disease caused by malnutrition and poor hygiene of which many prisoners were suffering from, and had another facility in barracks 15 of the men’s Krankenbaulagers (Hospital Building Camp) B II f and an additional one in the women barracks, camp B Ia.During the selection at the ramp Mengele made certain the ones he wanted to use for his experiments, children that were twins, people that had certain anomalies. Many children were killed after tormenting studies by phenol injections so that they could be dissected. Mengele was assisted by detained inmate doctors (148).Anatomical specimens were sent to Berlin-Dahlem for evaluation. Mengele continued to serve at the camp until January 17th 1945 at Auschwitz. The translations are my own and I am open for correction!
I do not think that you will find any medical equipment behind the blacked-out windows, those rooms were probably ransacked, the same thing was done in Dachau Hospitals-nothing was left!

    • As part of your research, have you come across any mention or list of Jewish doctors and or nurses who worked in Dr. Mengele’s laboratory in Auschwitz between July 30 1944 and begining of November 1944?

      Comment by Moshe Goldwaser — October 21, 2012 @ 11:40 pm

      • The only one I recall at the moment was Dr. Miklós Nyiszli, who performed most, if not almost all of the autopsies from Mengele’s experiments. I’m sure there were several more (and some are mentioned in his book).

      • This quote is from Wikipedia:

        Begin Quote:
He recruited Berthold Epstein, a Jewish pediatrician, and Miklós Nyiszli, a Hungarian Jewish pathologist, to assist with his experiments. […]

As a forced-labor prisoner under Mengele’s direction, Epstein proposed a study into treatments of the disease called noma that was noted for particularly affecting children from the camp.[14] While the exact cause of noma remains uncertain, it is now known that it has a higher occurrence in children suffering from malnutrition and a lower immune system response. Many develop the disease shortly after contracting another illness such as measles or tuberculosis.[15]
        End Quote

Dr. Mengele was first given the job as the doctor in the Gypsy camp. It was there that he noticed the children who had “noma”. I don’t think he needed a Jewish doctor to point out this disease to him. Dr. Mengele also noticed that many of the children had eyes of two different colors. That’s why he began a study of eye color and how eye colors are passed down to children. Dr. Mengele was studying heredity; he had already begun this study before he was sent to Auschwitz.

There is some suspicion that Dr. Nyiszli was not a prisoner at Auschwitz, nor at Mauthausen. He got some information from other books and then wrote a book of his own, in which he made many mistakes.

  5. Andrew Allen and David McCalden did a brilliant video segment on this part of the camp.

“The Martyr’s wall” is a Soviet hoax. That black part of the wall is a ridiculous backstop the Soviets put up, pretending thousands of Jews were executed against it. There are no bullet marks in the brick behind the nonsense backstop. That backstop isn’t kevlar, which wasn’t invented yet – it’s a complete hoax.

The Soviets obviously also borded up the windows. They created this own themed section of faux oppression in Jew Disneyland. “The Martyr’s Wall” is a complete hoax. Anyone who has shot a gun, even a bb gun at a REAL backstop knows it.

    • Mr. Hunt
I hate to contradict you but execution of inmates did take place at the “Black Wall” at Auschwitz. My German source that was there (now 90 years old) and he is more than an self-styled eye wittiness told me me that the Genick-Schuss method was used (bullet through the back of the neck) while the victim had to kneel down. The execution squad would have their backs to the wall in case they would be rushed by waiting victims. Rifles in a confined space between Blocks 10-11 were out of question. I agree the place has been spruced up for emotional and propaganda purposes otherwise no one would bother. The main reason of the execution was an anticipated revolt of camp inmates that originated from a “Resistance Cell” within Blocks 10-11. The SS reinforced their guard contingent by an additional 1000 men to cover all eventualities.
As a side issue I did look during my time in Dachau for bullet holes inside the coal bunker wall after the massacre that took place during the American Liberation May 1945 but found nothing, although a Browning cal .30 Machine Gun had been used. All was neatly disguised with a new layer of concrete. The same has taken place on the wall where SS Maintenance Personal were shot which runs along the north-eastern foot path within the camp that is now closed to the public.
