Time Magazine’s 1938 Man of the Year was Adolf Hitler

Time magazine’s “Man of the Year” has been an annual tradition since 1927 when Charles Lindbergh became the first Man of the Year.

On January 2, 1939, when Time Magazine published its annual Man of the Year issue, the person who was chosen for this honor was Adolf Hitler. Hitler was selected because he was the person or thing that had most influenced events of the preceding year.  However, Time made it clear that Hitler had not influenced events in a good way.

This year, the Person of the Year will be “The Protestor.”

Back in January 1939, Time’s cover picture featured Hitler playing “his hymn of hate in a desecrated cathedral while victims dangle on a St. Catherine’s wheel and the Nazi hierarchy looks on.” This picture, which is shown below, was drawn by Baron Rudolph Charles von Ripper, a German Catholic who had fled Hitler’s Germany.

The article about the 1938 Man of the Year in the January 2, 1939 issue of Time is quoted below:  (Caution hatemongering ahead.)

January 2, 1939

Adolf Hitler

Greatest single news event of 1938 took place on September 29, when four statesmen met at the Führerhaus, in Munich, to redraw the map of Europe. The three visiting statesmen at that historic conference were Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain of Great Britain, Premier Edouard Daladier of France, and Dictator Benito Mussolini of Italy. But by all odds the dominating figure at Munich was the German host, Adolf Hitler.

Führer of the German people, Commander-in-Chief of the German Army, Navy & Air Force, Chancellor of the Third Reich, Herr Hitler reaped on that day at Munich the harvest of an audacious, defiant, ruthless foreign policy he had pursued for five and a half years. He had torn the Treaty of Versailles to shreds. He had rearmed Germany to the teeth–or as close to the tooth as he was able. He had stolen Austria before the eyes of a horrified and apparently impotent world.

All these events were shocking to nations which had defeated Germany on the battlefield only 20 years before, but nothing so terrified the world as the ruthless, methodical, Nazi-directed events which during late summer and early autumn threatened a world war over Czechoslovakia. When without loss of blood he reduced Czechoslovakia to a German puppet state, forced a drastic revision of Europe’s defensive alliances, and won a free hand for himself in Eastern Europe by getting a “hands-off” promise from powerful Britain (and later France), Adolf Hitler without doubt became 1938’s Man of the Year.

Most other world figures of 1938 faded in importance as the year drew to a close. Prime Minister Chamberlain’s “peace with honor” seemed more than ever to have achieved neither. An increasing number of Britons ridiculed his appease-the-dictators policy, believed that nothing save abject surrender could satisfy the dictators’ ambitions.

Among many Frenchmen there rose a feeling that Premier Daladier, by a few strokes of the pen at Munich, had turned France into a second-rate power. Aping Mussolini in his gestures and copying triumphant Hitler’s shouting complex, the once liberal Daladier at year’s end was reduced to using parliamentary tricks to keep his job.

During 1938 Dictator Mussolini was only a decidedly junior partner in the firm of Hitler & Mussolini, Inc. His noisy agitation to get Corsica and Tunis from France was rated as a weak bluff whose immediate objectives were no more than cheaper tolls for Italian ships in the Suez Canal and control of the Djibouti-Addis Ababa railroad.

Gone from the international scene was Eduard Benes, for 20 years Europe’s “Smartest Little Statesman.” Last President of free Czechoslovakia, he was now a sick exile from the country he helped found. Pious Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, Man of 1937, was forced to retreat to a “New” West China, where he faced the possibility of becoming only a respectable figurehead in an enveloping Communist movement. If Francisco Franco had won the Spanish Civil War after his great spring drive, he might well have been Man-of-the-Year timber. But victory still eluded the Generalissimo and war weariness and disaffection on the Rightist side made his future precarious.

On the American scene, 1938 was no one man’s year. Certainly it was not Franklin Roosevelt’s; his Purge was beaten and his party lost much of its bulge in the Congress. Secretary Hull will remember Good Neighborly 1938 as the year he crowned his trade treaty efforts with the British agreement, but history will not specially identify Mr. Hull with 1938. At year’s end in Lima, his plan of Continental Solidarity for the two Americas had a few of its teeth pulled.

But the figure of Adolf Hitler strode over a cringing Europe with all the swagger of a conqueror. Not the mere fact that the Führer brought 10,500,000 more people (7,000,000 Austrians, 3,500,000 Sudetens) under his absolute rule made him the Man of 1938. Japan during the same time added tens of millions of Chinese to her empire. More significant was the fact Hitler became in 1938 the greatest threatening force that the democratic, freedom-loving world faces today.

His shadow fell far beyond Germany’s frontier. Small, neighboring States (Denmark, Norway, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, The Balkans, Luxembourg, The Netherlands) feared to offend him. In France Nazi pressure was in part responsible for some of the post-Munich anti-democratic decrees. Fascism had intervened openly in Spain, had fostered a revolt in Brazil, was covertly aiding revolutionary movements in Rumania, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania. In Finland a foreign minister had to resign under Nazi pressure. Throughout eastern Europe after Munich the trend was toward less freedom, more dictatorship. In the U.S. alone did democracy feel itself strong enough at year’s end to give Hitler his come-uppance.

The Fascintern, with Hitler in the driver’s seat, with Mussolini, Franco and the Japanese military cabal riding behind, emerged in 1938 as an international, revolutionary movement. Rant as he might against the machinations of international Communism and international Jewry, or rave as he would that he was just a Pan-German trying to get all the Germans back in one nation, Führer Hitler had himself become the world’s No. 1 International Revolutionist–so much so that if the oft-predicted struggle between Fascism and Communism now takes place it will be only because two revolutionist dictators, Hitler and Stalin, are too big to let each other live in the same world.

But Führer Hitler does not regard himself as a revolutionary; he has become so only by force of circumstances. Fascism has discovered that freedom–of press, speech, assembly–is a potential danger to its own security. In Fascist phraseology democracy is often coupled with Communism. The Fascist battle against freedom is often carried forward under the false slogan of “Down with Communism!” One of the chief German complaints against democratic Czechoslovakia last summer was that it was an “outpost of Communism.”

A generation ago western civilization had apparently outgrown the major evils of barbarism except for war between nations. The Russian Communist Revolution promoted the evil of class war. Hitler topped it by another, race war. Fascism and Communism both resurrected religious war. These multiple forms of barbarism gave shape in 1938 to an issue over which men may again, perhaps soon, shed blood: the issue of civilized liberty v. barbaric authoritarianism.

Lesser men of the year seemed small indeed beside the Führer. Undoubted Crook of the Year was the late Frank Donald Coster (ne Musica), with Richard Whitney, now in Sing Sing Prison, as runner-up. Sportsman of the Year was Tennist Donald Budge, champion of the U.S., England, France, Australia. Aviator of the Year was 33-year-old Howard Robard Hughes, diffident millionaire, who flew a sober, precise, foolproof course 14,716 miles round the top of the world in three days, 19 hours, eight minutes.

Radio’s Man of the Year was youthful Orson Welles who, in his famous The War of the Worlds broadcast, scared fewer people than Hitler, but more than had ever been frightened by radio before, demonstrating that radio can be a tremendous force in whipping up mass emotion. Playwright of the Year was Thornton Wilder, previously a precious litterateur, whose first play on Broadway, Our Town, was not only ingenious and moving, but a big hit. To Gabriel Pascal, producer of Pygmalion, first full-length picture based on the wordy dramas of George Bernard Shaw, went the title of Cineman of the Year for having discovered a rich mine of dramatic material when other famed producers had given up all hope of ever tapping it. Men of the Year, outstanding in comprehensive science were three medical researchers who discovered that nicotinic acid was a cure for human pellagra: Drs. Tom Douglas Spies of Cincinnati General Hospital, Marion Arthur Blankenhorn of the University of Cincinnati, Clark Niel Cooper of Waterloo, Iowa.

In religion, the two outstanding figures of 1938 were in sharp contrast save for their opposition to Adolf Hitler. One of them, Pope Pius XI, 81, spoke with “bitter sadness” of Italy’s anti-Semitic laws, the harrying of Italian Catholic Action groups, the reception Mussolini gave Hitler last May, declared sadly: “We have offered our now old life for the peace and prosperity of peoples. We offer it anew.” By spending most of the year in a concentration camp, Protestant Pastor Martin Niemöller gave courageous witness to his faith.

It was noteworthy that few of these other men of the year would have been free to achieve their accomplishments in Nazi Germany. The genius of free wills has been so stifled by the oppression of dictatorship that Germany’s output of poetry, prose, music, philosophy, art has been meagre indeed.

The man most responsible for this world tragedy is a moody, brooding, unprepossessing, 49-year-old Austrian-born ascetic with a Charlie Chaplin mustache. The son of an Austrian petty customs official, Adolf Hitler was raised as a spoiled child by a doting mother. Consistently failing to pass even the most elementary studies, he grew up a half-educated young man, untrained for any trade or profession, seemingly doomed to failure. Brilliant, charming, cosmopolitan Vienna he learned to loathe for what he called its Semitism; more to his liking was homogeneous Munich, his real home after 1912. To this man of no trade and few interests the Great War was a welcome event which gave him some purpose in life. Hitler took part in 48 engagements, won the German Iron Cross (first class), was wounded once and gassed once, was in a hospital when the Armistice of November 11, 1918 was declared.

His political career began in 1919 when he became Member No. 7 of the midget German Labor Party. Discovering his powers of oratory, Hitler soon became the party’s leader, changed its name to the National Socialist German Labor Party, wrote its anti- Semitic, anti-democratic, authoritarian program. The party’s first mass meeting took place in Munich in February 1920. The leader intended to participate in a monarchist attempt to seize power a month later; but for this abortive Putsch Führer Hitler arrived too late. An even less successful National Socialist attempt–the famed Munich Beer Hall Putsch of 1923–provided the party with dead martyrs, landed Herr Hitler in jail. His incarceration at Landsberg Fortress gave him time to write the first volume of Mein Kampf, now a “must” on every German bookshelf. (Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess helped write it. Imprisonment also gave Hitler time to perfect his tactics. Even before that time he got from his Communist opponents the idea of gangster-like party storm troopers; after this the principle of the small cell groups of devoted party workers.)

Outlawed in many German districts, the National Socialist Party nevertheless climbed steadily in membership. Time-honored Tammany Hall methods of handing out many small favors were combined with rowdy terrorism and lurid, patriotic propaganda. The picture of a mystic, abstemious, charismatic Führer was assiduously cultivated.

Not until 1929 did National Socialism win its first absolute majority in a city election (at Coburg) and make its first significant showing in a provincial election (in Thuringia). But from 1928 on, the party almost continually gained in electoral strength. In the Reichstag elections of 1928 it polled 809,000 votes. Two years later 6,401,016 Germans voted for National Socialist deputies while in 1932 the vote was 13,732,779. While still short of a majority, the vote was nevertheless impressive proof of the power of the man and his movement.

The situation which gave rise to this demagogic, ignorant, desperate movement was inherent in the German Republic’s birth and in the craving of large sections of the politically immature German people for strong, masterful leadership. Democracy in Germany was conceived in the womb of military defeat. It was the Republic which put its signature (unwillingly) to the humiliating Versailles Treaty, a brand of shame which it never lived down in German minds.

That the German people love uniforms, parades, military formations, and submit easily to authority is no secret. Führer Hitler’s own hero is Frederick the Great. That admiration stems undoubtedly from Frederick’s military prowess and autocratic rule rather than from Frederick’s love of French culture and his hatred of Prussian boorishness. But unlike the polished Frederick, Führer Hitler, whose reading has always been very limited, invites few great minds to visit him, nor would Führer Hitler agree with Frederick’s contention that he was “tired of ruling over slaves.” (Bismarck, the Iron Chancellor, also complained of the submissiveness of German character.)

In bad straits even in fair weather, the German Republic collapsed under the weight of the 1929-34 depression in which German unemployment soared to 7,000,000 above a nationwide wind drift of bankruptcies and failures. Called to power as Chancellor of the Third Reich on January 30, 1933 by aged, senile President Paul von Hindenburg, Chancellor Hitler began to turn the Reich inside out. Unemployment was solved by: 1) a far-reaching program of public works; 2) an intense re-armament program, including a huge standing army; 3) enforced labor in the service of the State (the German Labor Corps); 4) putting political enemies and Jewish, Communist and Socialist jobholders in concentration camps.

What Adolf Hitler & Co. did to Germany in less than six years was applauded wildly and ecstatically by most Germans. He lifted the nation from post-War defeatism. Under the swastika Germany was unified. His was no ordinary dictatorship, but rather one of great energy and magnificent planning. The “socialist” part of National Socialism might be scoffed at by hard-&-fast Marxists, but the Nazi movement nevertheless had a mass basis. The 1,500 miles of magnificent highways built, schemes for cheap cars and simple workers’ benefits, grandiose plans for rebuilding German cities made Germans burst with pride. Germans might eat many substitute foods or wear ersatz clothes but they did eat.

What Adolf Hitler & Co. did to the German people in that time left civilized men and women aghast. Civil rights and liberties have disappeared. Opposition to the Nazi regime has become tantamount to suicide or worse. Free speech and free assembly are anachronisms. The reputations of the once-vaunted German centres of learning have vanished. Education has been reduced to a National Socialist catechism.

Pace Quickened. Germany’s 700,000 Jews have been tortured physically, robbed of homes and properties, denied a chance to earn a living, chased off the streets. Now they are being held for “ransom,” a gangster trick through the ages. But not only Jews have suffered. Out of Germany has come a steady, ever- swelling stream of refugees, Jews and Gentiles, liberals and conservatives, Catholics as well as Protestants, who could stand Naziism no longer. TIME’s cover, showing Organist Adolf Hitler playing his hymn of hate in a desecrated cathedral while victims dangle on a St. Catherine’s wheel and the Nazi hierarchy looks on, was drawn by Baron Rudolph Charles von Ripper, a Catholic who found Germany intolerable.

Meanwhile, Germany has become a nation of uniforms, goose- stepping to Hitler’s tune, where boys of ten are taught to throw hand grenades, where women are regarded as breeding machines. Most cruel joke of all, however, has been played by Hitler & Co. on those German capitalists and small businessmen who once backed National Socialism as a means of saving Germany’s bourgeois economic structure from radicalism. The Nazi credo that the individual belongs to the state also applies to business. Some businesses have been confiscated outright, on other what amounts to a capital tax has been levied. Profits have been strictly controlled. Some idea of the increasing Governmental control and interference in business could be deduced from the fact that 80% of all building and 50% of all industrial orders in Germany originated last year with the Government. Hard-pressed for food- stuffs as well as funds, the Nazi regime has taken over large estates and in many instances collectivized agriculture, a procedure fundamentally similar to Russian Communism.

When Germany took over Austria she took upon herself the care and feeding of 7,000,000 poor relations. When 3,500,000 Sudetens were absorbed, there were that many more mouths to feed. As 1938 drew to a close many were the signs that the Nazi economy of exchange control, barter trade, lowered standard of living, “self-sufficiency,” was cracking. Nor were signs lacking that many Germans disliked the cruelties of their Government, but were afraid to protest them. Having a hard time to provide enough bread to go round, Führer Hitler was being driven to give the German people another diverting circus. The Nazi controlled press, jumping the rope at the count of Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels, shrieked insults at real and imagined enemies. And the pace of the German dictatorship quickened as more & more guns rolled from factories and little more butter was produced.

In five years under the Man of 1938, regimented Germany had made itself one of the great military powers of the world today. The British Navy remains supreme on the seas. Most military men regard the French Army as incomparable. Biggest question mark is air strength, which changes from day to day, but most observers believe Germany superior in warplanes. Despite a shortage of trained officers and a lack of materials, the German Army has become a formidable machine which could probably be beaten only by a combination of opposing armies. As testimony to his nation’s puissance, Führer Hitler could look back over the year and remember that besides receiving countless large-bore statesmen (Mr. Chamberlain three times, for instance), he paid his personal respects to three kings (Sweden’s Gustaf, Denmark’s Christian, Italy’s Vittorio Emanuele) and was visited by two (Bulgaria’s Boris, Rumania’s Carol–not counting Hungary’s Regent, Horthy).

Meanwhile an estimated 1,133 streets and squares, notably Rathaus Platz in Vienna, acquired the name of Adolf Hitler. He delivered 96 public speeches, attended eleven opera performances (way below par), vanquished two rivals (Benes and Kurt von Schuschnigg, Austria’s last Chancellor), sold 900,000 new copies of Mein Kampf in Germany besides selling it widely in Italy and Insurgent Spain. His only loss was in eyesight: he had to begin wearing spectacles for work. Last week Herr Hitler entertained at a Christmas party 7,000 workmen now building Berlin’s new mammoth Chancellery, told them: “The next decade will show those countries with their patent democracy where true culture is to be found.”

But other nations have emphatically joined the armaments race and among military men the poser is: “Will Hitler fight when it becomes definitely certain that he is losing that race?” The dynamics of dictatorship are such that few who have studied Fascism and its leaders can envision sexless, restless, instinctive Adolf Hitler rounding out a mellow middle age in his mountain chalet at Berchtesgaden while a satisfied German people drink beer and sing folk songs. There is no guarantee that the have-not nations will go to sleep when they have taken what they now want from the haves. To those who watched the closing events of the year it seemed more than probable that the Man of 1938 may make 1939 a year to be remembered.

  1. Dear Herb,
Are you serious by making reference to this website?
“There is other evidence to suggest that during those months, Nazi minds were turning towards large-scale exterminations in the Minsk and Mogilev regions. On 15 August 1941, Himmler visited the psychiatric asylum of Novinki, 6.5 km north of Minsk. The asylum was situated at a collective farm which had been assigned to the SS. Himmler instructed SS-Brigadeführer Arthur Nebe, commandant of Einsatzgruppe B, to kill the patients, but to use a “more humane” method than shooting.
On 18 September 1941, 200 patients from Novinki were brought to a small bath house and murdered by using vehicle exhaust gas. A further unsuccessful experiment was conducted using high explosives; 25 patients were locked into two bunkers and the explosives detonated. The gruesome results can be imagined.”
Where could we read the “written” instruction given SS-Brigadeführer Arthur Nebe by Heinrich Himmler?
I should disappoint you, but Russian bathhouses are built in a different way, than Finnish saunas and vehicle exhaust gas just wouldn’t do anything.
How would you reconcile “to use a “more humane” method than shooting” with “25 patients were locked into two bunkers and the explosives detonated. The gruesome results can be imagined.”
What do they call “bunkers”? Underground storage of a collective farm? Or they had been specially built for 25 patients to with “high explosives”? What is “high explosives”, anyway? Is there such thing as “low explosives” too? What equivalent of TNT (Trinitrotoluene) was used?
Herb, you are really disappointing me.

      The Right To Reply:
To answer your question, I am not referring seriously to this website, however, there was a good reason to search the net for places like Mogilev,Smolensk and Minsk as one of my uncles was a war corespondent in those places and had filmed as well as photographed for his own “collection” atrocities the Einsatzgruppen had committed there and I remember, still a youngster, distinctly that he told my parents that we are committing Völkermord. So I was naturally curious where and what these places were like. He apparently had seen camps from the air but not actually been inside them.
By reading the entire story (above) I came for the first time across a written claim that Hitler was notoriously indolent. This was only rumored in Germany all along, that he never got up before noon and worst of all that he was afraid of physical work. There is even a medical term for it, I have forgotten.
So, to summarize I wanted to know more of what I listened to, of what I heard many years ago. Is there any harm in that?
PS< The fate of my uncle, he was caught twice by the Russians, escaped together with others, which to Wehrmacht rule was once too often, was transferred to Groningen in Holland where he filmed the arrest of a Dutch "Resistance Fighter" and was after the war sentenced to a one year jail term as he had witnessed the Schutzhaftnahme but not intervened.

      • “one of my uncles was a war corespondent in those places and had filmed as well as photographed for his own “collection” atrocities the Einsatzgruppen had committed there” the whole world is waiting for this collection…. why don’t you join stormfront or codoh, there will be red carpet for the amazing venue of the only ex wehrmacht soldier on the internet telling the truth, why do you stick to the bottom of an unknown blog, get the truth out, there are hundreds of thousands reading those boards, ‘herb’, those sheep astray need you!

        • Wolfgang,

Why does he stick to the bottom of an unknown blog? Because it’s not “unknown” but highly visited and he’s here to destroy it’s effectiveness. This blog, I’m sure, has been quite effective against the holocaust lies, and the only way to get to it is through the comments. All the obvious “believers” who have commented here have been knocked out because of their poor arguments, but ‘Herb’ has come up with a cunning strategy: He was there, he saw it and his honor demands he be honest about it.

But note, he doesn’t really answer the questions put to him and his sources are really, really bad. His website gives him away. He’s now trying too hard (not getting mad) to stay on and keep his identity believable. This is a good lesson in just how much deception abounds and how we Aryans are always falling for it because we don’t expect it, not being that way ourselves.

Much credit and thanks to you for expressing your suspicion of him.

  2. What’s the the source of your NOTORIOUSLY INDOLENT quote, Herr Stolpmann?

Skeptic beat me to the punch in pointing out the perverse lies of the OSS prevaricator Dr. Walter C. Langer. Bravo! Langer’s sorry wartime service was discussed at length in an audio podcast at the Mein Kampf Project website which I recommend to
the readership here. Jewish exceptionalism in WWII historiography is coming under closer scrutiny as a new generation wakes up to the dearth of non-Jewish “experts” in the field.

I’ve run across another person without a past like the Nuremburg lawyer Lt. Col Murray C. Bernays for whom there appears to be no archived biographical information on the Net. This is Leigh White who wrote a book in l944 entitled The Long Balkan Night about his philo-Semitic swashbuckling as an American foreign correspondent in war torn Yugoslavia, Romania and Greece. Unlike Bernays, who left a Hollywood headshot, there is no photograph, post-war journalism or biographical info on Leigh White. I think whoever he was he must have had a desk next to Dr. Langer’s at the OWI or SHAEF offices in Wash DC.

  3. It is well-known. that Joseph Stalin was spending most of the time in his cabinet and was sleeping on the couch. He would not go to sleep until 5 or 6 in the morning and would get up around noon. He also, was working all night long and even was placing phone calls at night. I have never heard anyone accused Stalin of being indolent for that matter.

Herewith a quote, concerning Hitlers habits, I did come across during my “Resarch of the Final Solution” as very little is written about concentration camps in Russia:

A probable scenario, therefore, is that in different places, and by different methods, the components were being pieced together in the autumn of 1941 for the annihilation of the Jews. All that was required was the green light from Hitler – and that green light was effectively provided by Hitler’s approval for the deportation of the Reichsjuden. It was not necessary for Hitler, NOTORIOUSLY INDOLENT, to be aware of the minutiae concerning the implementation of the “Final Solution”; in the poisonous atmosphere he had created that could safely be left to others, working towards the Führer. Exactly when the decision was taken for the murder of all European Jews is as yet uncertain; but that the decision could have been taken by anybody other than Hitler is beyond belief.

  4. Well, well. I never looked at Herbert Stolpmann’s website before now. I agree with Wolfgang that he is an imposter, or at least a Jew, or both. What gave him away to me before I even looked at his site were the following things he said in these comments:

    My dear friend “who dares”,
Let their be no doubt in your mind that their was was fear alright, you had to be careful what you said, and rather keep your mouth shut unless you spoke with like-minded. Looking back and talking to long time KZ inmates at Dachau, that were more idealists than communists and fought in Spain against Fascism […] Fascism would never have spread through Europe. All of them from Mussolini-Dollfuß-Salazar, to Hitler would never have gained the support nor a foot hold had the democracies intervened.

I am not an adherent pursuer of HC events, rather use the German expression Völkermord than the Greek derivative (holocaust) and still publishing factual events that did take place, have seen photos and motion pictures of what happened as a youngster, that were taken by one of my relatives in Russia.

PS: I hardly ever mentioned Hitler as such, for your information, he was notoriously indolent, rarely got up before 12 am, as matter of fact when the Allies had landed in Normandy, his staff was afraid to wake him before noon as he would be grumpy all day and never stopped shouting all day. Just read and check what others have written those that were present.

Sceptic: And where did Stolpmann get these ideas … from Nizkor? Hitler “notoriously” didn’t go to sleep until 3 a.m. or later because he found the late hours a better time to read and study. He was awakened around 10, looked at the papers and incoming documents, bathed, etc., and didn’t appear until noon or 1 p.m. But that was mostly when at Berchtesgaden. He certainly didn’t sleep through the Allied D-Day! What “historians” are you reading?

He had a relation ship with his nice, had set her up in an apartment in Munich, a young and the only women he provably ever loved, who mysteriously for unknown reasons committed suicide with his service revolver. And the best kept secret was his relation ship with Eva Brown …

Sceptic: Gossip. Hitler didn’t “set his nice (sic) up in an apartment”, but she lived in his apartment as his half-niece, a family member. Her death could have been, and probably was, an accident. But we’ll never know because the coroner couldn’t say. And his relationship with Eva a “secret?” It was just kept subdued, but not a secret. The reason this gives you away is that it has nothing to do with what kind of leader Hitler was.

When it came to orders during war time, very often and in many places it has been the case that individuals have waited for commands and orders from him, that did not come. Rather it was the duty of every single person to attempt in the spirit of the Führer to work towards him, called “Im Sinne des Führers” (in the spirit of the Führer.)

Sceptic: You read about this in books, too. Yes, Hitler wanted his leaders to internalize National Socialist thought and philosophy so that they would know the right things to do and to make good decisions. He could not give a specific order to everyone in every instance, and did not want to. How else would he build an NS leadership to carry on after he was gone? At this point, he was still there to see if they did it wrong and could correct the situation. Hitler was not dealing with a political party that agreed to go back and forth with other parties (now us, now you), but wanted a lasting and ongoing German leadership that was National Socialist. No shame in that.

Your tolerance you speak of does not recommend you. That’s what Simon Wiesenthal’s organization is promoting. People on this blog that have been treating you with kid gloves, believing you were an old veteran, should stop that right now.

I am not a Jew, as a matter of fact we are able to trace our ancestry back to the 1300’s, Gerhard Stolpmann was a crusader knight and later a Bishop. As for myself I am more an Agnostic than anything else. My views are outright capitalistic and I have no need to accumulate more and live now on a pension.
Why should I be assumed to be an Imposter is beyond me, all information and back ground material is readily available via the web, from books, and most of them I have obtained from the Geisel Library , University of California, San Diego. I do read other editions, in French and Russian languages, whatever I publish has thus some basis of validity. To give references to every line I write for doubters like you would be an impossible task.
When it comes to my own own country of origin, Germany, I had to ask myself, how could these horrors possibly be committed and did not believe a single word of what American GI’s told me in 1945, a country that had born minds like Goethe, Schiller, Nietzsche and others.

In 1943, the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) received A Psychological Analysis of Adolf Hitler: His Life and Legend, written by Walter C. Langer (with assistance from other leading psychoanalysts) for the purpose of helping the Allies understand the dictator, related to strategic purposes (including post-war purposes)The OSS report states that Hitler was an impotent coprophile. The report describes Hitler as having “possibly even a homosexual streak in him,” although the researchers concluded that the evidence of Hitler’s homosexuality was too thin to make any conclusions. One of Hitler’s opponents in the Nazi Party, Otto Strasser, claimed that the Nazi dictator forced his niece Geli Raubal to urinate and defecate on him.
Jack Nusan Porter, of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, wrote:
Did Hitler despise homosexuals? Was he ashamed of his own homosexual identity? These are areas of psychohistory that are beyond known knowledge. My own feelings are that Hitler was asexual in the traditional sense and had bizarre sexual fetishes.
Her death occurred on a night when the entire Hitler household staff was off duty except for a deaf worker, Frau Dachs, and it is said that it was a rare occurrence for Hitler to leave behind his gun.
Many things were said about Raubal’s death. It was rumoured that Hitler had her shot (or had ordered her to be shot) for infidelity or other reasons. As these rumours circulated, Hitler himself released a statement to the Münchener Post:
It is untrue that I and my niece had a quarrel on Friday 18 September; it is untrue that I was violently opposed to my niece going to Vienna; it is untrue that my niece was engaged to someone in Vienna and I forbade it.
Murray Davis reported that Gregor Strasser had a brief affair with Geli Raubal, allowing him to find out from her details of Hitler’s sexual habits and alleged impotence. If true, it provides another motive to believe her death was a murder as such allegations would have been a threat to both Hitler and the Party.

I was told that only upper class families, who kept their own records, can trace their ancestry farther back than the Thirty Years war.

Church Records have been kept by the Catholic Church while Germany was part, and during the time of the Holy Roman Empire, to my knowledge from 990-1871 for so called “High” born individuals and still exists in the Vatican. As Europa was comprised of Feudal States and the “low” born individuals were treated as chattels and serfs of the ruling Kings or Emperors, no recordings of births or deaths were recorded until Martin Luther’s time from mid 1550 or thereabouts, as there was no universal German Language.
I was not aware that church records had been destroyed during the thirty year war which started 1616-1648, which sounds like an excuse as far as tracing of ancestors is concerned I am sorry but I have no answer to your question.

My answer: Someone who did love, someone who could really love, and someone with the courage and fortitude to face the reality of physical life who wanted to be a witness that the autopsy was done properly and there was no foul play. That’s who. It takes an exceptionally strong and loving man. But Jews cannot appreciate such things.

    • Wolfgang,
Hitler practiced an amazingly indolent lifestyle.
Although Adolf Hitler appeared before the German people as a selfless leader who had sacrificed everything for his country, nothing could have been further from the truth. His apparent frugality in dress and food were more than outweighed by his many extravagances and his indolent lifestyle. Until the Russians began pushing the Germans back into German territory, Hitler seldom put much effort into anything other than his carefully crafted speeches,
he cared little for the day to day administration of the government. Therefore, he returned to indolence shortly after talking on the massive responsibility of running the German state. It became almost impossible for his subordinates to meet with him. Since Germany had no legislative body at that time, his prescence was often required, but impossible to obtain for long periods of time. Some of his ministers found it difficult to get meetings with him for months at a time. Of course, once the war started, Hitler took a keen interest in how the war was prosecuted and micromanaged it more than his ministers would have liked. As the war became more and more desperate, Hitler did start working longer hours, but by then it was too late to do anything. Given his overconfidence in his own abilities, it probably hurt Germany in those last days more than anything else.

      • I have read in several books that Hitler had a habit of “chewing the carpet.” Is this a German expression that means something besides literally chewing on a carpet? Or did Hitler actually throw himself on the floor and physically chew on the carpet with his teeth?

The Teppichfresser or Carpet Chewer is not an expression normally used nor does it have any other meaning, it is on the whole demeaning, if referred to a person as “Fresser” or fressen. That are the eating habits of an animal. I only overheard a conversation in 1950/51 by an ex Ritterkreuzträger (Knights Cross) who received his decoration at the end of the war from Hitler during a ceremony at Berchtesgaden that Hitler was mentally unstable and did in fact chew at the edge of the carpet after he had congratulated them all. His story was rather convincing and there were no reason for him to make it up.
William L Shirer writes in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”, which you may have read of a similar indecent during Hitlers meeting with Chamberlain in 1938 over the Czechoslovakian problem, but then Shirer had a chip on his shoulder and is often biased for some reason in his comments.

The Nazi killing center Bernburg was between 21 November 1940 and 30 July 1943 part of the state medical and nursing facility in Bernburg an der Saale (Saxony-Anhalt ) in operation and was a “euthanasia” institution-of the so-called Action T4 . Here the sick and disabled from 33 care homes and nursing homes and some 5,000 prisoners from concentration camps, were murdered with carbon monoxide in a gas chamber.
Today it is a memorial for the victims of the Nazi “euthanasia”

    Comment by Herbert Stolpmann — December 18, 2011 @ 1:05 am

the Sonnenstein Euthanasia Clinic (German: NS-Tötungsanstalt Sonnenstein; roughly translated “Sonnenstein Nazi Death Institute”) was a Nazi killing centre
In 1940 and 1941, the facility was used by the Nazis to exterminate around 15,000 people in a process that was labelled as euthanasia. The majority of victims were suffering from psychological disorders and mental retardation, but their number also included inmates from the concentration camps. The institute was set up after the beginning of the Second World War as part of a Reich-wide, centrally coordinated and largely secret programme called Action T4 for the “Elimination of life unworthy of life” (Vernichtung lebensunwerten Lebens) or the killing of what the Nazis called “dead weight existences” (Ballastexistenzen). Today, the Pirna Sonnenstein Memorial Site (Gedenkstätte Pirna Sonnenstein) stands to commemorate these crimes.

The Nazi euthanasia facility at Sonnenstein Castle also supported the personnel as well as the organisational and technical preparation of the Holocaust. It was one of six that were in operation in Saxony, and was — not least due to the number of victims — one of the worst sites of Nazi war crimes located in the former fortress of Sonnenstein Castle near Pirna in East Germany, where a hospital had been established in 1811.

I can best explain what was going on in the Vernichtungslager, which were termed Healing and Nursing Homes, form an extract in my Blog during my search for facts abut Buchenwald

The killing of Jewish prisoners and the disabled unable to work, became the content of an action that began in 1941 under reference 14f13 .SS-Doctor Waldemar Hoven gave detailed accounts about these activities during his trial.
The exact date of the official meeting with the commander has not been documented. This must have been in the first half, probably in April, May 1941. At the 16th or 17th June 1941 the first group of “euthanasia” experts arrived in the concentration camp at Buchenwald. They separated and assessed prisoners who were taken in mid-July 1941 in the “euthanasia” killing center (Tötungsanstalt) Sonnenstein and there suffocated with gas. A second Selection Commission (Gutachterkommission) arrived in November 1941 and sorted especially inmates after sifting through the filing system. In March 1942, the first transport was assembled for the euthanasia killing center at Bernburg, exclusively with Jewish prisoners.

Following Extermination Transports went during 1941/42 from Buchenwald into Euthanasia Killing Centers: (Tötungsanstalten)
    13.7.1941 94 Inmates to:
    Sonnenstein (Pirna)
    14.7.1941 93 Inmates to:
    Sonnenstein (Pirna)
    2.3.1942 90 Jewish Inmates to:
    11.3.1942 90 Jewish Inmates to:
    12.31942 105 Jewish Inmates to:
    14.3.1942 99 Jewish Inmates to:

Under the total of 571 selected and condemned were 468 Jews.[Both facilities were officially designated “Healing and Nursing Homes”.sic]

With the introduction of “Special Treatment 14f13” took the form of murder and was systematically set into motion also on sick patients by injection them with Phenol, Evipan or Air, it was latent in the camp since 1940 anyway. Dr. Eisele testified at the Dachau Buchenwald process, that commander Koch had instructed him in early July 1941, to identify all TB patients. Two weeks later, his chef came to him and showed him a letter from Berlin which stated as “special treatment” -that was the expression of SS and Gestapo for executions without legal formalities- for Koch ordered him to arrange all suffering from tuberculosis, anti-social and professional criminals to proceed accordingly. The first murder action in this regard began with the delivery of two shipments mostly sick, some men also invalids from Dachau on July 6th, 1941 (1,000 people) and on 12th July (1008 people).

What I have seen in Dachau and what I was told by inmates as well as by Guards, there was and still are the remaining Gas Facilities for homicidal use, but for some reason never used. I could never find out why not..
The disinfection chambers had nothing to do with the sometimes alleged gassing of prisoners.

  9. Wolfgang & Schlageter
We might be going around in circles on subjects that have been covered numerous times before, yes, there was a pride within Germany and its people what had been achieved under Hitler, who had in the main his full support. I would not necessarily call it brainwashing, however propaganda played a vital part as you were unable to listen or know what the rest of the world was thinking. When it came to the final defeat of Germany and the eventual public knowledge of atrocities that had been committed, I do not think their was any collective guilt, rather a shameful attitude, secondly it was a matter of self-survival for families where the next meal would come from and where to live, so it had little or no impact in our daily life. The Occupation Forces did very little, nor did they have any experience in civil administration. Things got worse until the cold war was hotting up and you would hear from many Germans, “Thanks to Uncle Joe (meaning Stalin) that American attitude towards the Germans changed and improvement were made, as they did (the USA) adhere in parts still to the so called Morgenthau-Plan.
As far is Hitler was concerned it was hardly ever a subject after the war, that he worked for the Reich, night and day, ignored family life for his own, wrecked his health doing so, was all an orchestrated propaganda ploy. He had a relation ship with his nice, had set her up in an apartment in Munich, a young and the only women he provably ever loved, who mysteriously for unknown reasons committed suicide with his service revolver. And the best kept secret was his relation ship with Eva Brown right through the war years, whom he married and acknowledged as his wife in their last hours of their lives. When it came to orders during war time, very often and in many places it has been the case that individuals have waited for commands and orders from him, that did not come. Rather it was the duty of every single person to attempt in the spirit of the Führer to work towards him, called “Im Sinne des Führers” (in the spirit of the Führer.) Do you really wish someone like him to return in 10 or 20 years? I wont be alive by then!
As to myself, yes I am 83 years old and if you have read all my blogs, I had, on recommendation of my Bank, to remove the date and place of birth from my ID due to identity theft.
The question of the HC is often denied, although I personally dislike the expression, there have been so called Vernichtungslager well documented that have gassed systematically people that did not fit into a “racially pure” society. No, I do not deny this took place, only the figure as quoted by the Simon Wiesenthal Institute is suspect. I do think with my version of writing that I do not support or promote Zionism.
One personal item that may give you an inside look and the tolerance I have towards others: A brother of my father (an uncle of mine) married a blue-eyed, blond and very Nordic looking, wealthy lady and I loved her as a youngster, influencing me in a number of ways, even when it came to eating certain “items”, she was not allowed to have children of her own as she did not have a “Taufschein”. You probably guessed it she was a Jewess.

Dachau was THE HILTON of KZ Camps, I am writing at present about Buchenwald and will continue to do so about other places I have seen until my dying days as objectively as I can without promoting one side or the other nor would I ever in my dreams have had any intention to promote Zionism. The points you are raising might suit a younger generation, I was brought up during the third Reich, participated in the last days of the war, sent youngsters like me at the age of 16 to their deaths for the glory of the final victory, memories that will haunt me for ever. The rest is history!

They had to be brainwashed back and guitl ridden to start thinking otherwise and most seem still admiring Hitler, you seem more an exception to the rule from the olde generation. That youngsters had to fight was only natural facing the danger of total annihilation of the german people and culture, they had to try to save the people from the soviets by all means and their intervention while useless for winning a war has certainly pushed the iron curtain a little farther. Hitler indolent… yeah right he worked for the Reich night and day, ignored a family life for his own, wrecked his health doing so. Although it seems I’m defending Hitler it is not that I am nostalgic of that era, on the contrary, I just wish truth to come ou, and in a more general frame of strugglig for our society to survive… I know most of us wil be wishing another Hitler within 10 or 20 years when Europe is under islamic rule. 12. Herr Stolpmann,

It’s NOT simply about what Hitler did. It’s also about ignoring the context, and about Germans bearing collective/ethnic/racial/national (including all Germans worldwide) guilt — seemingly for eternity….It’s also about our supposed obligation to support Israel and combat anti-Semitism and welcome open borders and mass Third World immigration and all the rest of the post-war globaloney. Even if certain Germans did in fact commit certain atrocities, to put it bluntly: So What!? The context was a Jewish backed international financial drive to destroy Germany before there were even any purported gas chambers or Einsatzgruppen. And the context was the establishment of the world order that was achieved with the crushing (not defeat, but crushing, slandering, denigration, etc) of Germany and Japan. And the context was the “democracies” hypocrisy, supporting the USSR and maintaining their colonies (including the US in the Philippines) while going on about German and Japanese militarism and imperialism.

And especially regarding atrocities and human rights abuses and concentration camps and “genocide” and enslavement: The context was what the USSR had been doing long before Hitler came to power, and what they did while the Nazis were attacked in the “democratic” West, and what they did during the war, and what they (and the Americans of course) did AFTER the war, including mass-murders, mass migrations, mass-enslavement of POWs, and also the true sacrifice by fire of the Tokyo Air Raid and Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings when Japan was already defeated and all its allies had been “pacified” already.

So even if the Nazis murdred say a million or so innocent people, and even as I’d condemn that, it doesn’t change my basic attitude — that Hitler bashing is an ONGOING psy-op that is out of all context to what else went on in the world at the time. For this reason, no person of good conscience should have anything to do with the Hitler haters and holocaust myth enforcers/promoters — people like you who unwittingly or not perpetuate German “collective guilt” and promote Zionism with your blogging about relentless depravities at Dachau.

Life Magazine called Salazar “the greatest Portuguese since Prince Henry the Navigator”.
Opposed to communism, socialism, anarchism and liberalism, Salazar’s regime was corporatist, conservative, and nationalistic. Its policy envisaged the perpetuation of Portugal as a pluricontinental empire under the doctrine of lusotropicalism, with Angola and Mozambique as main colonies (as well as Portuguese provinces after 1951:and a source of civilization and stability to the overseas societies in the African and Asian possessions.

  15. My dear friend “who dares”,
Let their be no doubt in your mind that their was was fear alright, you had to be careful what you said, and rather keep your mouth shut unless you spoke with like-minded.
Looking back and talking to long time KZ inmates at Dachau, that were more idealists than communists and fought in Spain against Fascism, blamed the West in particular America as a democracy for their lack of support. Sure there was a token support, but it was only Stalin that showed particular interest but he had a different agenda in mind and dropped those that fought into the “POOH” They maintained if help would have come from that direction, that is the USA, Fascism would never have spread through Europe. All of them from Mussolini-Dollfuß-Salazar, to Hitler would never have gained the support nor a foot hold had the democracies intervened.
The other point what astonished me, was their attitude towards their so called “Liberation”, they, the Communist, would only talk of another Occupation, and they were correct in their prediction that things might get worse, “Until we bring Uncle Sam down one day!” Meaning more Capitalism than anything else.

    Comment by Herbert Stolpmann — December 14, 2011 @ 3:59 pm

    • ‘hitler would never had a foot hold had the democracies intervened’ O and why would you have the so called democracies decide in place of the german people? What is that for policy? ‘There was Fear’ O and you think in 2012 there is no fear? I can not talk openly of my nationalistic views in 2012 in Europe without big social risk or more if publicy critising the official doctrine. The will of the German people was Hitler’s programm, by legal majority in 1933 and overwhelming majority in 1935 and further at the referendums, when people had seen the azaming results of his policy. With all my respect to your lifestory you happen to be fortunate enough (I would say brainwashed) to think we leave in democracy with free choice while in reality the bankers rule us to the grave of civilisation by mass debt, immigration, exploitation of ressources and warfare for any cause. My son is brainwashed right now in school, ‘that the allies were the pacific side and the liberators’ he is told, while in reality they burned Germany to the ground, Japan; Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Irak, Lybia and so forth and they are still an occupying force that does not allow free choice by way of the european community of marxists, perpetrating genocide on the original people by immigration. Hitler is portrayed the summit of evil for taking back a piece of Poland while France and England occupied and looted 2/3 of the earth. It is amazing how you analyse the allied victory having seen and lived the wreckage of Germany, how you have accepted this as something normal, warfare on civilians, even more how you still hold on to the official version of the HC.

  16. The masked protestor on the cover of TIME’s Person of the Year issue has been drawn to suggest a radical Muslim female ready for action. By “action”
I mean either murder or martyrdom. Without reading the issue, my guess is that the story’s subtext is really about the demonization of dissent and the new war on “domestic terrorism” than speaking truth to Wall Street. I’m always amazed at photos and films of Hitler riding in open cars and going out among the people to pinch the cheeks of children and pin medals on hospitalized soldiers etc. He appears to have moved among the ordinary Germans with impunity unlike statesmen, businessmen and celebrities today who need an army of security guards to go anywhere. And it was the high ranking Teutonic blue blood Von Stauffenberg who tried to assassinate him, not a tatterdemalion Jewish or Communist enemy. Contrary to consensus history, in the ongoing age of the dictators Hitler is starting to stand out as one leader who didn’t rule by fear.
