Gas chamber door shown at Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony at Auschwitz

I was curious about the January 27th Remembrance Day ceremony at Auschwit-Birkenau this year, so I went to the official website of the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum here.  I found a photo of a gas chamber door with this quote:  “During this year’s anniversary ceremony, a unique relic was presented: the only preserved door to a gas chamber, deriving from one of the crematoriums, blown up by SS members at the end of the evacuation of the camp.”  (I have enhanced the photo with Photoshop, so that it can be seen more clearly. Click on the photo to enlarge it.)

This door looks somewhat like the wooden door in the photo below, which was taken by the Soviets just after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Would the Nazis have used a wooden door for a Gaskammer (the German word for a gas chamber)?   (more…)
