Pregnant at Auschwitz — the story of Miriam Rosenthal

Strange as it may seem, there were pregnant women at the Auschwitz II death camp, aka Birkenau, who managed to escape the gas chambers and survive.

From the moment that the Jews arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau, they were separated into two long lines, one line for men and the other line for women and small children.  Anyone younger than 15 or older than 45 was immediately sent to one of the four gas chambers. Those who were allowed to live were put into one of several camps enclosed by barbed wire — the men in the Men’s Camp and the women in the Women’s camp.  There was a separate camp for Gypsies and a “family camp” for Czech prisoners who had been transferred to Auschwitz from the Theresienstadt camp.

Being pregnant in a “death camp” was a death sentence.  Gisella Perl, a famous Jewish prisoner who worked as a doctor at Auschwitz, performed many abortions in order to save the lives of the women who were pregnant; if the pregnancy had been discovered by the SS men, the pregnant woman would have been beaten to death or sent to the gas chamber.

Miriam Rosenthal was one of the few women who was pregnant at Auschwitz, but survived.   Miriam’s life was saved because she didn’t step forward when the SS men tried to find out which women were pregnant by offering them double rations.

There were 200 women who stepped forward to receive extra food, including some that were not pregnant.  Miriam was too smart to fall for that trick.  She survived, but the 200 other women were taken immediately to the gas chamber.

I previously blogged here and here about the seven Jewish women, including Miriam Rosenthal, who were brought to Dachau after their babies were born in a Dachau sub-camp.  Miriam is still alive at the age of 90 and her 67-year-old son, who was saved because his mother was smart enough to outwit the Nazis, is also alive and well.

Jewish mothers with their babies at Dachau

Shown from left to right in the photo above are Iboyla Kovacs with her daughter Agnes; Suri Hirsch with her son Yossi; Eva Schwartz with her daughter Maria; Magda with her daughter; Boeszi Legmann with her son Gyuri; Dora Loewy and her daughter Szuszi; and Miriam Schwarcz Rosenthal with her son Laci (Leslie). Miriam was the last of the seven mothers to give birth at Kaufering.

Miriam was one of the 14 children of Jeno and Laura Schwarcz of Komarno, Czechoslovakia. After Czechoslovakia was jointly invaded by Germany, Hungary and Poland in 1938, the section of Czechoslovakia where the Schwarcz family lived was taken over by Hungary. On April 5, 1944, Marian was married to William Rosenthal, and two weeks later, she became separated from her husband when she was sent to a ghetto. Miriam was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, along with her husband’s family, in the middle of May 1944.

Miriam survived the first selection for the gas chamber upon her arrival at Birkenau and was assigned to the women’s barracks where, after several weeks, she realized she was pregnant. In order to get out of Birkenau, she volunteered for a transport to the Plaszow concentration camp in Krakow. After only a few weeks of working at Plaszow, the camp that is shown in the movie Schindler’s List, she was sent back to Auschwitz-Birkeanu.

Upon her arrival at Birkenau, Miriam survived another selection for the gas chamber, although she was  obviously pregnant.

Miriam was soon transferred again, this time to a sub-camp of Dachau in Augsburg, Germany where she was assigned to work in a Messerschmitt airplane factory. One day in December 1944, while at work in the factory, two SS men saw that she was pregnant; they escorted her on a passenger train to one of the Kaufering sub-camps of Dachau near Landsberg am Lech, where she was placed in a barrack with six other pregnant women who would soon be ready to give birth. Even though they were pregnant, the women were forced to work in the camp laundry.

In February 1945, the women at Kaufering started to give birth. A Hungarian Jewish gynecologist was assigned to help them through, even though he was too weak to stand. A Jewish Kapo working in the kitchen had kept the women alive during their pregnancy by sneaking them extra rations. Miriam’s baby was born on February 28, 1945, according to her story.

You can read the story, as told by Miriam here.

I previously blogged here about how ordinary German soldiers killed Jewish babies.

  1. FG. You had a picture before of 4 new mothers in the picture. They were at the prison. They were holding their babies. They were looking at the cameras smiling. I might hazard to say, these women were happy.

If the Krauts hated Jews so much, why didn’t they kill these rug rats before they even opened their eyes? There’s a shitload of new mothers in this picture. Just like the picture of the four mothers, the mothers look happy, well fed, well dressed, yada, yada, yada. So why do we hear that the asshole nazis murdered babies. How can they (Hebs )propagate their lies, when it looks like we’ve got evidence that shows otherwise?

  6. I thought people in these camps didn’t get shit to eat to begin with . I thought preggos were bumped off. Now all of the sudden out of human generosity they’ve got a maternity ward. Kind hearted SS men are taking these women to this place when they see their pregnant. Geez o Petes. Can the Hebs come up with anything that jives? If they would all get together and agree on a certain set of numbers , some people might actually believe their lies

  8. Anyone who believes this would believe that Sara Silverman killed jesus.
Miriam survived because she turned down extra food while 200 pregnant jewess’ fell for the nazi trick?
Wouldn’t it have been the jewish Kapos dishing out the food?
Is Miriam participating in the Virtual Survivor Visualization project to tell her tales for the rest of time?

    I have another question,

How many German Women were raped by communist jews at wars end?

Go check the winston Smith link above, you can probably find the answer there.

Anyway, What if all those jewess’ got pregnant by trying to get extra rations?

Ohh wait, The Nazis were all queers.

They’ll probably she was there ( yeah I know how old she is,but the butt pirates would make her out to be a time traveler).

  9. The revisionists strike again eh?! For every truth told the revisionists will come back with another lie or their own version of events as they believe they know it, but don’t know it. Where is the proof that it didn’t happen? For every survivor there will be hundreds of SS soldiers free and telling their story on what they used to do, how they conform to the rule of thumb excuse ‘we were following orders’ (if it didn’t happen … what orders were they forced to follow?), and that if they didn’t follow orders they would suffer the same fate of execution or sent to the front – if it didn’t happen what orders were they afraid of not following? Please give me a break furtherglory. I’ve talked to living, breathing SS men, living breathing austrian guards of the infamous austrian camps where tortures, executions and parachute jumping were the norm – go back to the hole you climb from. I watched recently a program from the US white supremists, all enacting the ‘burning books’ of the Nazis in 1934 (but this didn’t happen either did it?) and what were they shouting whilst burning the books, and allegedly protecting their mother ‘American English Language?’ Zeig Heil!! Yes, they spoke German in the US whilst burning the books! doh! such intelligence eh? Wonder where they got that idea from????

    • Did you read another blog, written by someone else, and then decide to write a comment on my blog? Nothing in your comment applies to my blog post about pregnant women at Auschwitz. I did not write about SS soldiers telling their stories.

I have also talked to living, breathing SS men, but I have not talked with “austrian guards of the infamous austrian camps.” I have photos on my website at http://www.scrapbookpages.com/Mauthausen/Quarry/quarry.html of the famous Mauthausen quarry where the parachuters were pushed to their death. I did not deny the “parachute jumping” on my website, but I did note that none of the SS men fell off the ledge while they were pushing the Jews to their deaths. I also show a photo on my website which has a body of water underneath the parachuting ledge. I don’t know how deep the water is, or whether it was there when the Mauthausen camp was in operation, but the water might have broken the fall of the parachuters and saved their lives.

I previously blogged about the burning of books by the Nazis at https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2010/11/02/when-books-were-burned-in-nazi-germany/ Are you commenting about that blog post?

          • wow, you really do have an anger problem don’t you and you’re full of hate; it’s a hate filled world that causes such misery as the holocaust.

Mistakenly I ‘replied’ under a thread not meant for furtherglory but a revisionist in this thread who quoted an author who denies the holocaust with a hate filled comment such as yours. Unfortunately, the holocaust will attract anger filled individuals such as you; think about the people who survived the holocaust and their frustration in reading your hate. The burning of the books is a well known, documented, filmed and accepted historical fact and one in which was only the start of the dehumanisation of any ethnic minority that lived in Germany at the time; google it if you know how to – or does your investigative mind only point you in the direction of denying the holocaust? The holocaust is another documented, filmed (with the exception of Allied liberation films, all the documentary films that exist were made predominantly by Germany SS guards and officers by the way – again predominantly due to their procedural psychology and penchant for documenting everything – such was their belief that the Third Reich would conquer and master without faltering and therefore unanswerable to consequence). There is no denying that the Palestinians are suffering a fate that is unacceptable to not only the western world but the world as a whole, but that does not make the holocaust go away. I believe that this forum is about the holocaust and not the current day Israeli/Palestinian crisis. Perhaps you could start your own blog there and discuss it there.

            • If the Germans documented everything then how come there has never been found an order written by Hitler authorising the murder of the Jews? Surely a decision considered as important as that would have been documented.

              Comment by Carol Peirce — September 13, 2012 @ 3:47 pm

              • According to the Holocaust experts, there was no need for a written order to murder the Jews. The Holocaust was perpetrated because there was a “convergence of thought.” All the Nazi leaders had the same thoughts about killing the Jews and they could read each other’s minds. The Nazis always spoke in euphemisms, but everyone knew that they were speaking in code. That’s why the Nazi war criminals all said that they had heard the term “gas chamber” for the first time at Nuremberg. They had always spoken in code.

        • Without all the Wagnerian drama, libraries are purging old un-PC books on a continuing basis. I can recall reading a lot more on this, but this is all I can find for now:
          http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com/2011/08/twilight-of-meaning.html
          (…)
The White Stag was written the year my father was born. In my youth you could find books that old and much older, plenty of them, in small town public libraries all over the country. Nowadays, increasingly, you can’t. What you get instead are shelf upon shelf of whatever’s new, glossy, popular and uncontroversial, massaged into innocuousness by marketing specialists and oozing a fetid layer of movie, toy, and video game tie-ins from all orifices, all part of the feedback loop that endlessly recycles the clichés of current popular culture into minds that, in many cases, have never encountered anything else. In the process, the threads of our collective memory are coming silently apart.

I don’t think it’s going too far to describe the result as a kind of cultural senility. That concept certainly goes a long way to explain the blank and babbling incoherence with which America in particular stares vacantly at its onrushing fate. Without a sense of the past and its meaning, without narratives that weave the events of our daily lives into patterns that touch the principles that matter, we lack the essential raw materials of thought, and so our collective reasoning processes, such as they are, spit out the same rehashed nonsolutions over and over again.
          (…)

          http://www.quadrant.org.au/magazine/issue/2011/7-8/the-great-purge-of-our-libraries
          (…)
The eagerness with which books are being culled threatens the original rationale of libraries. Culling is bureaucratic-speak for killing, removing, obliterating, censoring. To remove books into depositories removes access, prevents serendipitous discoveries, censors knowledge. And the shift from deposit to destruction is one that can all too easily and silently be made. Various grounds are given for culling. None of them is valid. The point of library holdings is that they must be value-free. A judgment on the worth of a book is irrelevant. A collection of books deemed worthless can provide valuable evidence for historians, sociologists, psychologists of a society’s values. The historian of cultural decline may well find crucial evidence in a collection of trashy fiction, venal journalism or bureaucratic reports.
          (…)
But in our brave new world, uncontrolled access to information has been deemed problematic. The shift of books to deposit libraries is an extension of the surveillance society. Put away anything politically incorrect or reactionary, or radical or progressive, depending on the current political agenda, and make it hard to find. Not actually destroyed, just deposited. The significance of that is that deposit libraries and special collections with restricted access all record application, entry, use and duration. Unlike the old open-shelf system. But just like the internet. Everything you consult will be duly recorded. And may be used in evidence against you.

Defenders of the system will say, what is the problem if you have nothing to hide? But governments change, agendas shift, one decade’s hallowed values become a criminal offence in the next. And to look at something now deemed unacceptable is all too readily construed as showing a commitment to the forbidden values.

It is argued that books are technologically obsolete, that everything is available on the internet. But not everything is available on the internet. Google’s attempt to digitise the world’s out-of-print books has been halted by the US courts. Its attempt to digitise the world’s newspapers, begun in 2008, was closed down in May 2011.

          • Old books represent the hated pre-1965 America villifies by Philip Roth and those who think like him:
            http://thecommonroomblog.com/2009/02/beautiful-cpsia-book-post.html
            (…)
an ordinary children’s book printed after 1985“

Below you will see a few more dangerous, pre-1985 books- these are books I purchased a couple years ago at an astonishing library booksale. The library hadn’t had a booksale in their entire 100 year history- everything they’d ever owned was still on their shelves. They sold books for 1.00 or less. The CPSIA makes such transactions illegal. Many libraries are going to simply ignore the law, but that doesn’t make this a good law. Already, many thrift shops and bookstores are setting aside or throwing out older books. I removed my listings from Amazons. The law left as it is inhibits the free trade of used books and encourages contempt for Law itself.

Many will look at this list and say, “But surely those could be sold as vintage books, not intended for children, they would not have to be thrown away.” And yes, many of these books could be sold as vintage books, but not all- look again at what the CPSC says about vintage books:

Guidelines from the CPSC on vintage books (emphasis mine):
Question 17: Can I sell vintage children’s books and other children’s products that are collectibles?
Yes. Used vintage children’s books and other children’s products sold as collector’s items would not be primarily intended for children. Because of their value and age, they would not be expected to be used by children. Therefore, they do not fall into the definition of children’s product and do not need to comply with
            the lead limits.

VALUE + AGE + NOT EXPECTED TO BE USED BY CHILDREN = VINTAGE
Most of these books actually cost less than a brand-new hardback, and most of them would be used by children. Furthermore, if the library or bookseller has to ‘sequester’ these books in the ‘vintage’ section and price them accordingly, I can’t afford to buy them. If they can’t sell them, most libraries and booksellers aren’t going to keep their discards around in some ‘sequestered’ space- they don’t have the space.

Here are some of the books that I believe the CPSIA now prohibits for sale by the use of children:
            (..)

I am unable to shed more light onto the method of selection by gassing in Auschwitz of registered inmates, other than what I have translated in my narrative from court documents and eye witness statements. To the best of my ability, the sentence you repeated in italic letters is correct. All inmates, registered and then gassed had to be accurately accounted for, were listed and subsequently deleted from the total and the “living” and regulary reported back to Oramienburg for funds as well as the “sucsess rate” of the Jewish Solution.
The reference to tatooing ‘But what do I know?’ covers basicly in broad terms the procedure used, yet I have met one lady who was born in Auschwitz who had her number as a baby tatooed between her left hand thumb and forefinger.

Thankfully, there is a small minority of revisionists/deniers of the holocaust that they count for nothing in the eyes of the world, but keep the debate alive. German politicians today, German people today, including the children survivors of SS men executed for their crimes against humanity, accept the part they played in the holocaust and do not deny it. The Allied forces who liberated the camps across europe have their own story to tell on what they witnessed when they entered the camps. Deniers/revisionists are asking the world to believe that there was a ‘world conspiracy’ of fantastical proportions; it’s laughable really in view of the evidence that is there in front of you and evidence that still sits in archives, yet to be seen.

  12. In 2010, Miriam Rosenthal’s tall tale went like this :

“An SS man came round with a loudspeaker and he was shouting, “All the women come outside. You’ve been given a double ration of bread.”

It appears Miss Rosenthal added a small detail last week:

“All pregnant women line up, he barked. Line up, line up — your food portions are being doubled.”

Anyway, it was quite simple to escape systematic extermination:

“Eva Fleischmanova somehow managed to hold in her belly so that he did not notice she was pregnant.”

“I am told that Germany must be punished. I ask: When did punishment begin? It certainly seems to have been going on for a long time. It began in 1943, and continued during 1944 and 1945, when the most frightful air bombardments were cast upon German cities, and when the general exhaustion of their life under the cruel Nazi regime had drained the last ounces of strength from the German race and nation.”

  14. The indisputable evidence from survivors regarding the fate of new born babies, is somewhat contradictory:

“The Jewish women, when they arrived in the first months of pregnancy, were subjected to abortion. When their pregnancy was near the end, after confinement, the babies were drowned in a bucket of water.”
    – Marie-Claude Vaillant-Couturier, French Communist, Auschwitzer & Ravensbruecker, IMT testimony.
    page 212: http://avalon.law.yale.edu/imt/01-28-46.asp

“The babies were thrown into boxes as they were born; after a few days when the boxes were full (those in the bottom layers being presumably already dead), they were burnt without any formalities.”
    – Oswiecim, German Extermination Camps, Report from New Zealand Legation at Moscow, March 26, 1945

“As we were standing for roll call, one of the women gave birth to a premature baby. … the tiny baby just slipped out as we were standing there and right there we made a hole with our feet in the sandy soil and buried that tiny infant. If the baby had begun to cry we surely would have been killed.”

    • To the Black Rabbit
I did write briefly about babies born in Auschwitz, so did FG but then you may have missed it:

If the pregnancy was noticed after arrival the SS would kill the infants as a rule immediately or it died soon after birth due to inhumane living conditions. One of the few cases where a baby was able to be protected until the liberation is described by Anna G.: “On April 18, 1943 shortly after assembly was finished I brought my son Joseph into this world right in the open,[meaning the delivery was performed on open ground sic] with the help of fellow prisoners I succeeded to hide my baby in my bed in the dormitory […..] about four months later, however, he was found […..] by a big dog and and run with the bundle of my child into the courtyard where we were gathered. Although my mates wanted to hold me back I’ve made it known that I myself am the mother”. The SS tried to kill mother and child but by pure coincidence it was found during the subsequent counting in the gas chamber that one person was registered too many. Thus, both narrowly escaped death. The boy was tattooed on his right thigh.”From that time my son was officially recognized. I always kept him with me even at work. The child even delighted SS women and often had fun (sie hatten viel Spass mit ihm) [….] Some times I was warned that my child should be killed, but with the help of a Jewish nurse […..] I was able during all these years to keep my child alive.”
[There are many stories about babies born at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Olga Lengyel, a prisoner at the Birkenau camp, wrote a book entitled “Five Chimneys.” In her book, Lengyel described how Dr. Mengele would take all the correct medical precautions while delivering a baby at Auschwitz, yet only a half hour later, he would send the mother and baby to be gassed and burned in the crematorium. Lengyel herself was selected for the gas chamber, but managed to break away from the group of women who had been selected, before the truck arrived to take the prisoners to the crematorium.

Doesn’t the Legend assert that people sent to the gas chambers were not registered?

        But what do I know?

        • The Jews who were sent to the gas chamber immediately upon arrival were not registered. However, some prisoners were registered and then sent later to the gas chamber. If someone managed to escape from the gas chamber, they were never put on the list to be gassed again — except for a very few survivors who escaped the gas chamber as many as 5 or 6 times. Every survivor alive today has a story of how they escaped the gas chamber.
