Kristallnacht marked the beginning of Hitler’s war against the Jews

The title of my blog post today is a quote from an editorial piece written by Rabbi Brad Hirschfield on Fox News.  I previously blogged about the events leading up to Kristallnacht here.

Here is the full quote from Rabbi Brad Hirschfield’s editorial:

Kristallnacht marked the beginning of Hitler’s war against the Jews – his campaign for a “final solution” to the so-called “Jewish problem.” Seventy-four years later, people gather around the world to remember that horrible and fateful night. But how does one remember and commemorate a terrible past when the present is good and the future is looking even better?

What was “the so-called Jewish problem?”

The title of the Wannsee Conference, ordered by Hermann Goering, where the Holocaust was planned, was “The total solution to the Jewish question in Europe.”  According to Goering’s testimony at the Nuremberg IMT, the German word “Die Endlösung” meant “the total solution, not the final solution.”

On the third day of his cross examination of Goering at the Nuremberg IMT, the American prosecutor Robert Jackson questioned him about the treatment of the Jews in Nazi Germany, including the anti-Jewish Nuremberg Laws on Citizenship, which Goering had signed in September 1935.

Then Jackson confronted Goering with the most incriminating piece of evidence in the entire trial: a letter dated July 31, 1941, in which Goering had ordered Reinhard Heydrich, the chief of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), to prepare a plan for the “Final solution of the Jewish question.” Goering testified that the German term “Die Endlösung” in the letter should have been translated as the “total solution,” and that it referred only to “the emigration of the Jews,” not the extermination of  the Jews.

“The Jewish Question” was Should the Jews have their own state, or their own state-within-a-state?  Those who were against the Jews having their own state, or their own state within another country, were called anti-Semites because they wanted the Jews to assimilate, instead of having their own state.  Hitler was NOT an anti-Semite.  He did not want the Jews in Europe to assimilate; he wanted them to have their own state.

As the rabbi makes clear in his editorial, the Jews in America have assimilated, so there is no “Jewish problem” in America today.

  1. If Kristallnacht marked the beginning of Hitler’s war against the jews, why did Goebbels publicly called the Germans to halt their anti-jewish riots on the day following Kristallnacht? Goebbels’s call was even reported in the very jewish New York Times (…

  2. This blogger attended a David Irving meeting in October 2012

He writes: “During the discussion, the “Holocaust” was brought up immediately, and David Irving said he thought close to 6 million Jews actually did die throughout the course of WWII. He claimed that about 2 million died in Operation Reinhard alone.”

David Irving confirms this guy was at his meeting:

“A reader protests about what I am said to have said at San Diego: I google this quotation, and find it is in a blog posted by John Friend who was an “unknown” who attended my San Diego meeting. I email him at once:

“I am not at all happy that you have posted an unauthorised account of my private talk in San Diego. It was a closed meeting, and journalists were not allowed to come for precisely this reason.”

What an idiot. It is just like Stormfront, who repeatedly post on the Internet details of locations where I have spoken or, even worse, am about to speak. For one moment of glory this guy violates a confidence. I inform him: “I have removed your name from future lists and you will not be admitted in future. We have strict no-journalists and no-reporting rules which are made plain in admission letters.””

    • As many of the commentators have noted David Irving is intelligent and has written some interesting works in the past but as he has aged his eccentricity has become more evident along with his arrogance and rudeness.I would liken him to those people who stay on years as researchers at universities and become crankier and less useful as the years go by but nobody tells them to leave and retire.
His views on the Holocaust are of little value.

  3. I can’t agree that ‘Kristallnacht marked the beginning of Hitler’s war against the Jews’, although it was probably one of the most publicly defined illustrations of how isolated and dehumanised the Jewish communities in Germany and Austria had actually become at that point. By 1938 the media in Germany had been consumed by the Nazi regime and all newspapers, under the direction of the cultural ministry of Germany, headed by Goebells and Deitrich, attacked the Jews on a daily basis as the ‘evil in all societies’. Within the first month of becoming chancellor Hitler passed a number of laws which forbade Jews equality in life within Germany and by 1935 with the passing of the Nuremberg laws, designed to isolate and dehumanise Jews in Germany, his war had already taken a strong foothold within Germany.

  4. I don’t know much about Birobidjan (or Birobidzhan) and had never been there. But, the Jewish Autonomous Oblast (district) came to the existence as early as 1934. It’s size (almost 14,000 sq/mi) is significantly larger than current territory of Israel (over 8,000 sq/mi). However, the current population is a little over 175,000.
Since the establishment of a semi-independent Jewish entity, the Jewish populations of USSR was very reluctant to settle there, due to relatively cold weather conditions and lack of trading opportunities. The Soviet propaganda movies advertising the opportunities there, did not have much of effect on the Jewish communities in Russia.
At this moment, the Jews represent only 1% of population of the entire district. Most of them are holding the administrative positions (by decree), or working for the mass media, department of education, religious institution. The Yiddish language is mandatory through K-12.
I short, that was a land of opportunity given to the Jews of USSR, but they rejected it.

    • As a trading area it was surely ideal for the Jews, positioned between Russia, and China/? and on the main rail route. In 2012 it could have been a successful and very prosperous state.
Today it is a ghost of what was and Yiddish has actually practically died out.

    • Kudos.. Dr Alfred Rosenberg discussing 15.000.000 Jews with his British counterparts in 1939 opposed sending Jews to Palestine as it would cause unrest in the region and suggested Guiana or Madagascar as an alternative.. I was amazed to learn that 3 months later the British proposed sending between 250 and 500 Jews to Guiana as an experiment. It appears that Dr Rosenberg was not dismissed out of hand and that the British shared his concerns but alas it wouldn’t be politically correct to discuss those facts in any meaningful debate today.

  5. The phrase “Endlösung der Judenfrage” appears in the 1897 manifesto of the (Zionist) “National Jewish Association – Cologne”:

“(ii) Experience has shown that civic emancipation has fallen short of securing the social and cultural future of the Jewish people. The Final Solution of the Jewish Question lies therefore in the establishment of the Jewish State.”

It was a phrase coined by Jewish nationalists, later known as Zionists:

    • Thanks for telling us the origin of the phrase. I thought that Goering had made it up.
