What color were Dr. Josef Mengele’s eyes?

With nothing better to do, I got to thinking about the color of Dr. Josef Mengele’s eyes.  Why was Dr. Mengele obsessed with changing brown eyes to blue?  Was it because he had blue eyes and he wanted everyone to have the opportunity to have blue eyes?  Or was he sad because he had brown eyes and he wanted to learn how to change the color of his own eyes?

To find out Dr. Mengele’s eye color, I started my search by re-reading the book entitled Mengele, The Complete Story by Gerald Posner and John Ware. I had to re-read the whole book because the index does not include the words “eyes” or “blue.”

I found the following quote in Mengele, the Complete Story:

The memory of this slightly built man, scarcely a hair out of place, his dark green tunic neatly pressed, his face well scrubbed, his Death’s Head SS cap tilted rakishly to one side, remains vivid for those who survived his scrutiny when they arrived at the Auschwitz railhead. Polished boots slightly apart, his thumb resting on his pistol belt, he surveyed his prey with those dead gimlet eyes, Death to the left, life to the right. Four hundred thousands souls — babies, small children, young girls, mothers, fathers, and grandparents — are said to have been casually waved to the lefthand side with a flick of the cane clasped in a gloved hand. Mengele was the chief provider for the gas chambers and their crematoria. He had a look that said ‘I am the power,’ said one survivor. At the time, Mengele was only 32 years old.

What are dead gimlet eyes?  I had to look this up on Dictionary.com which gives this meaning for the term “gimlet eye”:

“an eye that appears to give a sharp or piercing look”

It seems to me that the words “dead” and “gimlet” combined into one description does not make any sense.   Dr. Mengele had sharp, piercing eyes, yet his eyes appeared dead?

Ruth Elias, a survivor of Theresienstadt and Auschwitz, who wrote a book entitled Triumph of Hope, described Dr. Mengele as follows:

Mengele was an attractive man. A perennial little smile showed the gap between his front teeth. Immaculately dressed in jodhpurs, he wore a cap bearing the SS insignia and carried the obligatory riding crop, constantly slapping it against his gleaming black boots. Whenever he spoke to me, he was very polite, giving the impression that he was interested in me. It was hard to believe that his little smile and courteous behavior were just a facade behind which he devised the most horrific murderous schemes.

From this description, it seems that Dr. Mengele was “an attractive man” because, as the old saying goes: “Handsome is as handsome does.”  All of the survivors of Auschwitz agree that Dr. Mengele was very charming and polite.  The photo below shows that Dr. Mengele had a pleasant demeanor.

As far as I am concerned, Rudolf Hoess, the man on the right was better looking than Dr. Mengele, who is shown in the middle of the photo. But to get back to the color of Dr. Mengele’s eyes, the color photo below shows that his eyes were brown.

Posner and Ware did not mention in their 325 page book that Dr. Mengele had brown eyes.  Why not?  Was Dr. Mengele “pure German”?  He had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes, which indicates that he might have had a trace of Jewish blood in his bloodline.  Was this why he was obsessed with eye color?

This quote is from page 15 in the book by Posner and Ware:

In July 1939 Mengele married Irene, then almost twenty-two years old, at Obersdorf. The wedding took place after a hitch that at one stage threatened to damage his career.  In Mengele’s submission to the Rasse-und Siedlungshauptampt, the Central Office of Race and Resettlement, to satisfy the SS that there was no trace of Jewish blood in Irene’s family, doubts were raised about her grandfather, Harry Lyons Dumler, an American diplomat, could not be found.  In the absence of proof that Dumler was the father of his wife’s son, the suspicion remained that the real father might be Jewish.  Thus Irene might have inherited Jewish blood.  A search by the German consul in the United States failed to resolve the crisis.   But photographs of Irene and her ancestors and glowing testimonials from friends of her “very Nordic ways” finally won the day and the marriage was allowed. Yet since Mengele was unable to provide clinching proof that Irene had “pure Aryan blood,” much to his chagrin, he failed to qualify for the ultimate accolade of racial purity — a place in the hollowed Sippenbuch, or Kinship Book, for those who had been able to prove, chapter and verse, that their ancestors were pure Aryan at least since 1750. Thus was the arch disciple of racial “hygiene” himself deprived of a certificate that his wife and future children would be racially “clean.”

Posner and Ware do not say in their book whether or not Dr. Mengele could prove that his ancestors, back to 1750, had no Jewish blood, but it is implied in the book that Dr. Mengele himself was racially “clean.”

Why is all this important?  Dr. Mengele was doing experiments at Auschwitz, trying to find out how physical defects are inherited. He wanted to find out how hereditary diseases, such as Tay-Sach’s Disease, are passed on.  This was a terrible insult to the Jews and that is why Dr. Mengele is the number one “war criminal” as far as the Jews are concerned.  The results of his experiments at Auschwitz are kept in a vault at Yad Vashem in Israel, never to see the light of day.

But what about changing brown eyes to blue?  I don’t think that Dr. Mengele was trying to CHANGE eye color.  In my opinion, he was trying to find out how eye color is inherited, but more importantly, how physical defects are inherited. Tay-Sach’s disease is caused by recessive genes, and blue eyes are also recessive.  People with Tay-Sach’s disease don’t live long, making it hard to find subjects for experiments, so Dr. Mengele was studying eye color instead.

This quote is from the website about Tay-Sach’s disease:

How do people inherit Tay-Sachs disease?

This condition [Tay-Sach’s] is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means both copies of the gene in each cell have mutations. The parents of an individual with an autosomal recessive condition each carry one copy of the mutated gene, but they typically do not show signs and symptoms of the condition.

Dr. Mengele had a Ph.D. in Anthropology as well as a degree in medicine, which he received in July 1938 from the University of Frankfurt. He earned his Ph.D. in 1935 with a thesis on “Racial Morphological Research on the Lower Jaw Section of Four Racial Groups.” In January 1937, Dr. Mengele was appointed a research assistant at the Institute for Heredity, Biology and Racial Purity at the University of Frankfurt. He worked under Professor Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer, a geneticist who was doing research on twins. As the war-time director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Hereditary Teaching Genetics, located in Berlin, von Verschuer secured the funds for Dr. Mengele’s experiments at Auschwitz. The results of  Dr. Mengele’s research on twins was sent to this Institute. The grant for Dr. Mengele’s genetic research was authorized by the German Research Council in August 1943.

You can read here about how Dr. Mengele pulled a family of dwarves out of the gas chamber at Auschwitz, and saved their lives.

  1. If you accept Mengele + trauma = brainwashing for whoever is in charge, then everything I comment on in passing day by day as beachhutman on twitter could well make sense. Just saying.

  2. Mengele was a homo alpinus which is a branch of the celt race, (cainites of the bible) and not an ayran. The reason he was obsessed with blue eye color was because the nazi wanted to open the “stargate” and only a pure ayrans can ever do that.

  3. Actually, according to that same Gerard Posner book you sourced along with many other documents (IDs, Auschwitz physical examination) his eyes were a brownish green. That photograph had been colored after it was taken. No colored photographs exist of Mengele as far as I know, except a few magazine covers that might have been colored after.

    • I have “brownish green” eyes myself. This color is sometimes called “hazel” because native Germans and German-Americans don’t want to admit to having brown eyes. The color of my eyes is more like “light brown.” I also have light brown hair (like in the song “I dream of Jeanne) which is called “dunkel blond” in Germany. It is very important, to some people, to be considered “folk deutsche.” For men in the SS, it was required to be “folk deutsche.” There was some question about Dr. Mengele’s pure Germany ancestry.

  6. This is an excellent article. I met Mengele. His eyes from memory were “tweed” like his coat, like his hat, like his scarf. Brown leather gloves, all immaculate. Grinning showing his tooth gap as he smiled, laughed and chuckled as he peeled off his glove at moderate speed and poked me in the Adam’s apple. I have written up the entire event here http://www.bhmversusmengele.tumblr.com. See also http://www.msbnewsextra.wordpress.com and all because of three or four articles in 2002 called “Alice in Wonderland” at http://www.msbnews.co.uk to be found in the a-z indez left side home page. Prepare yourself for some little shocks. They are Mengele did not die in 1979 as proved by essentially the same intelligence agencies that were using him for trauma based mind control development. I surmise most of what he did that seemed bizzarre was for the trauma value. Also he became as he grew old very short from two disease groups of spine and bone. Also his cheeks became very very heavily lined (with pain apparently), also it seems the Brits/Yanks shared in the spoils of his research…how to breal men, or break someone else’s brainwashing wuith greater trauma. I think he may have ended his days..after I saw him in 2002, probably around 2007, at his now son’s (surplus to requirements) Luxury Almarin Villa in Mougins, near Cannes. German name meaning “Masterwork” in a French town, close to celebs in Film festival time maybe for him to actually work on them with what is now known as Monarch programming. Watch for Ipsimus type jokes or wordplay hiding these facts if they ARE true, It is £4.000 a week and looks lovely, but it is a guess , wheras my meeting did happen, and it revived my 2002 efforts such that I would like to know if I was right about everything else from 2002 and since. By the way, the meeting was just a couple or three weeks into my 6 weeks of research (I was a Chartered Librarian) and after it I checked to see if it MIGHT could possibly be, No, never?, Mengele, and saw he died in 1979 and was taller, my guy had dropped 5 or 6 inches by age 93. (but was fit and very well cared for) It was not till 2 years ago I saw a photo from 1977. T’was he.
THe last surprise s this programming, he would have had it because it was around already (do a Springmeier Fantasia Mengele google search) which means he might not have possessed mens rea. You will understand later.

  7. Doctor Death was a scary person. I had a book once written by him when I was station in Germany. He kept good records and he believe in his madness. The war gave the man a opportunity to test on life. His experiments on twins to me was the worst.

    • What was the title of the book that you read? Amazon has a list of books ABOUT him, but the list does not include any books that were WRITTEN BY Dr. Mengele: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=josef+mengele&tag=mh0b-20&index=stripbooks&hvadid=1471214972&ref=pd_sl_2d7qu50dug_p

What was the nature of his experiments on twins? Did he sew two twins back to back? Or did he inject their eyes to make the eyes change color?

There were 36 different doctors who took turns making the selections when the Jews arrived at Auschwitz. Do you know the names of any of the others?

What about all the prisoners that he saved from the gas chamber at Auschwitz because he had no ability to determine a person’s age? He was waving 12-year-olds to the right because they told him that they were over the age of 15.

      • I was station in Germany in 1976-1980. History is my favorite thing. I read and research WW2. I went to many death camps in Poland and Germany. I posted some of the pictures on photo bucket. I wished I kept the book. He like twins. In the story. He wrote he went out to find the twins. He wanted to know if they could feel the other being torture or killed. The book is very detailed. I will go to my mother house. A possibility the book is in storage.

        • According to the official Holocaust story, which you must believe, in order to avoid going to prison in 18 countries, there were six, and only six, “death camps.” They were Auschwitz, Majdanek, Chelmno, Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor. Auschwitz was in the Greater German Reich, but it is now in Poland. All the others were in Poland when they were in operation and they are in Poland now. So that leaves no gas chambers in the old Reich, in what is Germany now. What were the names of the “many death camps” in Germany that you went to?

It sounds to me that the book you read was NOT written by Dr. Mengele himself, but written by someone else ABOUT Dr. Mengele. Dr. Mengele would not have written that he wanted to know if one twin could feel the other twin being tortured. He might have written that he wanted to know if one twin girl would feel sad if her twin was given a beautiful hair ribbon but she was not given a ribbon. He might have written that he wanted to know if one twin would feel sick if the other twin was given enough chocolate to make him or her sick.

          • As I understand it from numerous accounts on the web, but possibly a moral panic media exaggeration of course, Mengele was involved in traumatising his victims with absolutely off the wall barbarity. Today electroshock and a snuff video might be used, but apparently maximum trauma must have obtained when he killed one twin in front of another, I also have read in more than a few websites Mengele or his fellow MK Ultra/Monarch Programming buddies as they later became, would actually get one twin to kill the other, or if you look hard enough accounts they were forced into sex with each other, or with odd types from his favourite defectives of physical appearance, animals if not then then since, or the thinking goes those he sew together or did otherwise the most bizzare experiments. It all makes “sense” in regard to trauma creation . See my comment elsewhere in this website page. No offence intended, but it has to be seen for what it is…trauma….it is all documented by others and I will leave you to find out about a goat called satan at the Presidio base and Captain Aquino (from memory , might be slightly out) Tim Baber Whatever you might imagine, it is probably worse..but if you were a politician with a choice..a free choice, it would be this makes people do what we want, we dont have to kill them any more. And if we are not masters of this (with Mengele’s lab rat work) we will be someone else’s slave…and we will not even know it. On the other hand those in control will have become so ruthless you can expect eugenics to come back, people to be killed with the system, and the above scotched. but this is just my worry. Not yours?

“He told on this day 33 years ago.
A American soldier broke down the wall of the concentration camp.
Pick him off the floor and held him.”

What was the name of the concentration camp that had a WALL that was broken down by an American soldier? I have written on my website about the camps that were liberated by Americans and none of them had a WALL that was broken down by the American liberators. The camps that the American soldiers liberated had all been turned over to the inmates, or the inmates had taken them over, before the Americans arrived.

The people were barely alive when his unit fought to free some of the camps. WW2 was a bad war. I hope we don’t walk into WW3. Soldiers in WW2 talks little of the war. Was a bloody war. The man I met at the train station was very wise and kind. I wish I had more time to know him. He told me his name was Paul and he lived in Switzerland. In four years stationed in Germany. Not one old-timer discussed the war with me.

Germany kept records of all things done good and bad. Can find with proper research if you desire.. Doctor Mengele’s eyed mean little to history. He discovered many mysteries of the body. That were buried away. He was a madman who loved science. Thanks to the media today. Truth is hard to hide. Old wars secrets were buried with the Soldiers who fought and died.

It seems strange to me that an American soldier would live in Switzerland after the war. America was a Paradise in the years following World War II. It was the best of times in America. Yet, Paul stormed off to Switzerland, after he broke down the WALL of a concentration camp.

I didn’t know the important of the meeting till later. In war. Kindness is given often without the gift of name. I saw Africa, Asia and Bosnian. My unit was responsible for water, gas, food and a medical teams.I help people in desperate situation. Life is kindness and helping when we can. Even in war or peace. War give men opportunity to do great or negative things. This Doctor was a murderer who abuse the code of life and medicine. He got his deserve in the end. I hope men who slaughter woman and children have a place where their misery is forever in some place in hell.

            Comment by johncoyote — March 28, 2013 @ 7:56 am

            • Dr. Josef Mengele did not get “his deserve in the end.” He was able to live out his life in South America while no one was seriously looking for him to bring him to trial as a war criminal. He had an easy death; he died of a stroke while swimming. Some people complain about the fact that he didn’t suffer a long time before death. Strangely, Dr. Mengele was not being hunted down. I suspect that he was not being hunted because no one wanted to put him on trial. If he had been put on trial, then the world would have learned what his research at Auschwitz was really about. Now his research papers are hidden away in Israel and lies can be told about him.

Now that I know that the man, whom you met at the train station, was Jewish, I am guessing that the camp, where he “broke down a wall” to liberate the camp, was Buchenwald. He was probably with the propaganda brigade that descended on Buchenwald to plant the lampshades and Jewish soap and shrunken heads of Polish prisoners. I now understand why he went to Switzerland, instead of the United States. He probably accompanied some of the Jewish survivors to Switzerland and stayed.

The Angel of death is one of them. I appreciate your thoughts and blog. We need to be re-taught sometime. Never too old to learn. I haven’t thought about WW2 in many years. More wars and violence keep on coming and man keep create more demons and ghosts. I pray for peace for my children and all children. I don’t believe we will ever know peace. • Dr. Josef Mengele’s sin was that he made the world aware that the Jews have genetic conditions caused by in-breeding. You can read about it on this Jewish website: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/judaica/ejud_0002_0007_0_07175.html

                  Begin Quote
Genetic diseases with a high prevalence in Jews are mostly recessive. In general, over 1,000 recessive diseases have been discovered. Most are rare but the prevalence of some of these diseases is increased 100-fold or more in Jewish as in other isolated ethnic groups with predominant inbreeding. This increased prevalence is usually but not invariably confined to individual Jewish ethnic groups (“edot Israel”) and not found in Jews in general. Most are severe and often lead to early death. In some diseases genetic analysis has identified the first appearance of an abnormal “founder” gene originating in a small number of individuals within a Jewish group. This creates a genetic bottleneck whereby the prevalence of a recessive genetic disease is maintained at a high level by subsequent inbreeding.
                  End Quote

Dr. Mengele can never be forgiven because he was doing research on genetics. That is why his research papers are kept under lock and key.

Jack Bushyhead got his revenge on white people by killing German soldiers who had surrendered at Dachau. You are getting your revenge on white people by demonizing Dr. Mengele. The soldier that you met was Jewish, and he was getting his revenge by telling stories about “breaking down a wall” to liberate a concentration camp.
