Harry Reid compared Syria’s use of chemical weapons to “Nazi gas chambers”

The Times of Israel featured a news report today with the headline:

Reid compares Assad’s attacks to Nazi gas chambers

Senate majority leader tries to drum up support in Congress for American military actions against Syria

This quote is from the news report:  “Millions and millions of civilians and prisoners of war were murdered in Nazi death camps, Treblinka and Auschwitz.”

So that’s what happened during World War II?  Prisoners of War were murdered at Treblinka and Auschwitz.

Were any of the Nazis ever charged with killing Prisoners of War at Treblinka or Auschwitz? Not that I know of.

I searched and searched on Wikipedia (the official website for the history of the Holocaust) and found nothing about Prisoners of War being sent to Treblinka and Auschwitz to be murdered.

Reid might have selected the name Treblinka to mention because this camp has been in the news recently.

Symbolic cemetery at Treblinka

Symbolic cemetery at Treblinka has 17,000 stones in honor of the towns and villages from which the victims, who were killed at Treblinka, came

The photo above shows the symbolic cemetery, which is located on a knoll, at the top of a gentle slope, on the site of the former Treblinka extermination camp. The symbolic cemetery is a large circular area with 17,000 stones of various sizes and colors set into concrete. When I visited Treblinka in October 1998, my tour guide told me that 130 of the stones have the names of the cities or towns from which the victims were deported to the death camp.

Strangely, there are no stones in honor of the Prisoners of War who were murdered at Treblinka, according to Harry Reid.

My tour guide informed me that the ashes of the 800,000 people who were murdered here were dumped in this area and are now hidden underneath the concrete of the symbolic cemetery and by the grass and tiny flowers which cover the area.

One of the 17,000 symbolic stones represents the city of Kielce in central Poland, where 42 Jews were killed by a mob of Polish citizens in a pogrom on July 4, 1946, long after the Nazi occupation of Poland had ended.

Since my visit to Treblinka in 1998, I have learned that some tour guides now tell visitors that the number of 17,000 stones in the symbolic cemetery represents the highest number of Jews that were gassed in a single day when the camp was in operation. Others say that the number 17,000 represents the number of Jewish communities that were destroyed in the Holocaust.

Stone in honor of Janusz Korczak at Treblinka

Stone in honor of Janusz Korczak at Treblinka

The photo above shows a stone, in the symbolic cemetery at Treblinka, which was placed there in honor of Janusz Korczak, the only person to have his name on a stone. There are 17,000 stones in the symbolic cemetery and 700 of them represent the Jewish communities in Poland that were destroyed in the Holocaust. Most of the stones are small and have no writing on them. In the foreground of the photo is the stone for the victims from the town of Staszow in Poland.

Harry Reid should raise money for a stone to be put at Treblinka, in honor of the Prisoners of War who were murdered there.

Kurt Franz the last Commandant at Treblinka

Kurt Franz the last Commandant at Treblinka

The man shown in the photo above is Kurt Franz, notorious Nazi war criminal, who was the last Commandant of Treblinka.  He was such a nice man that the prisoners nicknamed him Lalka, the Yiddish word for “Doll.”  Is this the guy who killed Prisoners of War at Treblinka?

  1. Unfortunately Senator, that’s a poor example because the gas the Nazis used was not meant for homicidal use unlike sarin and was in fact used in large quantities for delousing which is a legitimate reason. Americans used DDT instead. Interestingly germans had sarin at the time, but did not use it in the gas chambers. They instead used the “bug spray” essentially. They also didn’t use gas on the field unlike in Syria. But hey while we are it maybe the Senator would like to think about the complications of mass gassing as documented in modern gas chamber executions.

    • The Germans had “DDT” essentially at the exact same time as the Americans, in late 1943–so, Kageki’s argument is far off the mark. DDT was NOT invented n the USA at all, contrary to the all too typical American delusion–it was invented in Switzerland by Paul Mueller who received a Nobel Prize after the war for his work on this substance. The Swiss made their discoveries available worldwide, free of charge, as soon as they realized how vitally important their discovery was. The German form which came from Switzerland ‘s CIBA initially was called “GESAROL” and was used for years after the war as well under that name. It was widely advertised in the same German pest control literature that also contained advertisements for Zyklon-B. The Germans to their enduring credit recognized already in 1944 that there was one enormous disadvantage to DDT or GESAROL and that was that it was “non-selective” in its insecticidal killing–it killed everything, beneficial insects as well as harmful ones. The German conclusions predated “Silent Spring” and Rachel Carson by an entire generation.

One solution to the dilemma which Americans were not even aware of was for the Germans to develop an insecticide which was s-e-l-e-c-t-i-v-e. IG Farben developed “LAUSETO” and “Lauseto-NEU.” The acronyms meant “death for lice,” the primary target for the insecticide. Lauseto-Neu was supposedly six times more effective at killing lice than DDT. The IG Farben plants were severely bombed which meant there was hardly any insecticide against lice available in Germany. All of that super chemistry was stolen by the US and other Allies after the war. However, even though there were excellent alternatives to DDT, it was DDT which was used widely throughout the US and much of the world until Rachel Carson appeared nearly twenty years later to wave her fingers at the establishment. The really “Bad Guys” (really dumb as well) had won the war–and the world suffered for it until Rachel Carson appeared so unexpectedly to save the world from a disaster that could have been far worse than WW2 itself. Without those beneficial insects, bees included, pollination of flowers for countless crops is not possible. Mass starvation with countless Bergen-Belsens will happen. Todays’ genetically modified foods with built-in pest controls may still cause the ultimate disaster.

  2. Since the sources of deadly gas for Treblinka, Sobibor and Belzec were diesel and/or gasoline engines according to the “holocaust scholars,” it would seem that if Harry Reid, the President, and the other cookoos who run this country really want to prevent another “holocaust,” they must destroy all of Syria”s diesel and gasoline engines as well. Why not?

  3. Janusz Korczak’s tombstone is not real, but rather commemorational. It is also carries writing “I Dzeci” (and children). How many children, what were their names? The information was not provided.
“Janusz Korczak”, was the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit. It means that the Goldszmit has never changed his name.
There is absolutely no proof that Henryk Goldszmit with unknown number of children had ever been sent to Treblinka, or arrived there. If “Janusz Korczak”- Henryk Goldszmit would die in any of the transition camps, he would be buried under his real name.
There is no basis to place Goldszmit-Korczak in Treblinka.
The word “lalka” means “doll” indeed, but it is a Polish word, not Yiddish

  4. Wasn’t the first homicidal gassing with Zyklon B supposed to be operated on Soviet POW’s at Auschwitz?

    Comment by hermie — September 19, 2013 @ 4:42 pm

    • By George, you are right. The first gassing by the Nazis took place in Block 11 in the main camp. There were 600 Soviet POWs killed in the first gassing, which was done to test the Zyklon-B gas. I have it on my own website at http://www.scrapbookpages.com/Poland/Auschwitz/Auschwitz06B.html

There were also Soviet POWs put into the brick barracks at Birkenau, which later became the women’s barracks. Many of the POWs died in the first of the two typhus epidemics at Birkenau. The Soviets had not signed the Geneva Convention of 1929, so they did not have the protection of the Geneva Convention. The Allies changed the laws after the war, and the Germans were put on trial as war criminals under these ex-post-facto laws.

During the war, the Germans made repeated attempts through neutral countries and the International Committee of the Red Cross to reach mutual agreement on the treatment of prisoners by Germany and the USSR. But Stalin always refused to reach such a mutual agreement on the treatment of POW’s. Stalin had even ordered the destruction of the Soviet POWs (because he saw the soldiers who had surrendered as traitors – see Stalin’s Order No. 270 below). Moreover a major reason for the terrible fate of the Soviet POWs was the unusual nature of the war on the eastern front, particularly during the first year — June 1941-June 1942 — when vastly greater numbers of prisoners fell into German hands than could possibly be accommodated adequately. And the German POWs didn’t suffer less in Soviet hands. For instance, out of the nearly 110,000 German prisoners captured in Stalingrad, only about 6,000 (5.5%) ever returned.

        Stalin’s Order No. 270:

If … “instead of organizing resistance to the enemy, some Red Army men prefer to surrender, they shall be destroyed by all possible means, both ground-based and from the air, whereas the families of the Red Army men who have been taken prisoner shall be deprived of the state allowance [that is, rations] and relief.”

The commanders and political officers … “who surrender to the enemy shall be considered malicious deserters, whose families are liable to be arrested [just] as the families of deserters who have violated the oath and betrayed their Motherland.”

(Source: Stalin’s War Against His Own Troops – The Tragic Fate of Soviet Prisoners of War in German Captivity – http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v14/Teplyakov.html)

And anyway lice (as you mentioned typhus) didn’t care about the Geneva Convention. Go to Hell cruel mass murdering Lice! 😉

True. Hoess even opted for Zyklon B after visiting Treblinka 8 months…LATER.
