Holocaust survivor Hilda Mantelmacher was “marched” from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen

This morning, I read a news article here, which mentioned that Holocaust survivor Hilda Mantelmacher spoke at a special diversity presentation held recently on the campus of Central Penn College.

This quote is from the news article:

[Mantelmacher] was invited to speak on Oct. 22 by part-time general education professor Darrel Showers who teaches a history course titled “Remember: A Retrospective of the Holocaust.” At first, the plan was to have her talk in front of the class as a guest lecturer, but the decision was made to share her message with the broader campus community, said Sarah Douglass, college spokesperson.

For years, Hilda had kept silent about her ordeal in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, until one day when she saw two Holocaust deniers speak on a TV show.  This was probably the Phil Donahue show, several years ago, where Bradley Smith and David Cole debated the Holocaust with Holocaust Believers.  That’s when Hilda started speaking on the lecture circuit.

You can listen to her talk at Central Penn College on YouTube:

At 18:53 minutes in the video, Hilda says that the Nazis put a Christian girl in the gas chamber.

At 19:44 minutes in the video, Hilda says that she does not have a tattoo.  She explains this by saying that the Nazis didn’t tattoo people who were selected for the gas chamber.  Hilda was very young when she was sent to Auschwitz, although she doesn’t give her exact age in the video. In another news story, which you can read here, Hilda said that she does not know the day nor the year that she was born.

Apparently, Hilda was selected for the gas chamber, but the Nazis never got around to gassing her.  It is well known that Dr. Josef Mengele could not determine age to within 5 years, so many young children were saved from the gas chamber, by lying about their age.

At 27:15 minutes in the YouTube video, Hilda says that she was MARCHED to Bergen-Belsen.  Up to this point, Hilda had been describing her stay at Auschwitz-Birkenau, which was in what is now Poland, a long way from Bergen-Belsen which was in northwest Germany.

Bergen-Belsen was the camp, to which Anne Frank was transferred, from Auschwitz-Birkenau.  The news article about Hilda’s diversity talk says that Hilda was TRANSFERRED to Bergen-Belsen, thereby covering a huge mistake made by Hilda in her talk. Or maybe, young girls were MARCHED all the way from Poland to Bergen-Belsen.

I rushed to the Bergen-Belsen page on Wikipedia to find out if women marched all the way from Poland to Germany in the last days of the war.  I found the following information on Wikipedia:

In January 1945, the SS took over the POW hospital and increased the size of Bergen-Belsen. As eastern concentration camps were evacuated before the advance of the Red Army, at least 85,000 people were transported in cattle cars or marched to Bergen-Belsen.[12]

I checked the source for this statement and found that this website is the source.  This quote from the website gives the information about the marches:

In the summer of 1944, the SS began to evacuate the camps near the front lines and transport tens of thousands of prisoners to more centrally located camps under catastrophic conditions. At least 85,000 men, women and children were taken to Bergen-Belsen on over 100 transports and death marches starting in December 1944. The train journeys in overcrowded cattle cars and the death marches sometimes lasted for several weeks.

Note that prisoners were MARCHED to Bergen-Belsen, but there is no claim that prisoners were MARCHED FROM POLAND to Bergen-Belsen.  They were marched from other camps in GERMANY to Bergen-Belsen which was WEST of the other camps.

Jewish prisoners dragging a dead body at Bergen-Belsen

Jewish prisoners dragging a dead body at Bergen-Belsen

At 27:53 minutes in the video, Hilda says that the girls at Bergen-Belsen had nothing to do but take away the dead.  The photo above proves that she was right about that.  But then she says that when the British came closer, the Nazis went to hide all the corpses.

There were thousands of dead bodies in the Bergen-Belsen camp because there was a typhus epidemic in progress.  That is why the camp was VOLUNTARILY turned over to the British, after a week of negotiations.  The Nazis did not try to hide the bodies from the British. The British knew that the camp was being turned over to them BECAUSE of the typhus epidemic, which could potentially spread to the German soldiers and the British soldiers who were fighting in this area.

In her talk, Hilda Mantelmacher said all the right things about the gas chamber.  At 13:03 minutes in the video, she says that the prisoners were forced to enter the shower, but it was really a gas chamber.  She mentions that the prisoners were given soap and towels to take with them into the showers, which were really gas chambers.  She also mentions that the prisoners were told to tie their shoes together before leaving them in the undressing room.  Hilda has the official gas chamber story down pat, even though she was never sent to the gas chamber herself.  Instead, she was sent to Bergen-Belsen, a camp that is known to everyone because that is where Anne Frank died, after she was sent there on a TRAIN.

In my humble opinion, Hilda should have done a little more research before telling her fake story about the Holocaust.  For one thing, Hilda said this:  “Dr. Josef Mengele greeted the new arrivals with a cruel face, vicious dogs and a whip held firmly in one hand.”  Every other survivor of Auschwitz has described Dr. Mengele as being very charming, NOT as having “a cruel face.”  The photo below shows Dr. Mengele in the center.  Does this look like “a cruel face:?

Richard Baer, Josef Mengele and Rudolf Hoess

Richard Baer, Josef Mengele and Rudolf Hoess

Most of the survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau describe Dr. Mengele as being impeccably dressed, and whistling as the prisoners passed by him during the selection process.

This quote is from the news article about Hilda’s talk to the students:

“From the start, it was clear that Nazi Germany was bent on the destruction of European Jews and made it a major goal of World War II. Mantelmacher remembers how her father had set aside a secret place for the family.”

So her family had a hiding place?  Could it be that Hilda hid in the “secret place” throughout the war, and was never sent to a camp?

I believe that Hilda Mantelmacher is contributing to the Holocaust denier side of the story, more than proving the Holocaust.

  1. I’m Hilda’s daughter and its uneducated people like some of the above replies that made the HOLOCAUST POSSIBLE. How sad for the still living survivors and their families to have to read or listen to such nonsense.

Some of my readers might want to know what you are talking about.

On my blog, I wrote about a video which featured Hilda.

  2. First of all if you are going to do research do it with a website that is more reliable than Wikipedia, secondly, maybe you should have listened to the whole presentation rather than doing your research. I have read books written by other holocaust survivors and they have also said that Dr. Mengele had a cruel face. You are contributing to the deniers by stating that her story is false. In addition, the hiding place that she had was in her house. When her town was evacuated the Nazi’s had information on every inhabitant of the towns who were Jewish therefore, when they were evacuated they had the names and everyone had to be there. Read books rather than rely on the internet and Wikipedia for your answers. It is ridiculous that you should take the time to resort to insulting someone who had been through and event such as this. The people who were not underfed are those who were recent arrivals, the ones who had been there for a long time were the ones who were skeletons upon their liberation. Also, if before you go assuming you are correct based on the internet sources and the Wikipedia website, which college students are not even allowed to use as a reference for any project because it can be unreliable. Seriously, this is the same site that has the biography and personal life’s of the rich and famous spelled out on it. As for the typhus epidemic, those sick were sent to the gas chambers, they would not keep them around if there was a possibility of the disease spreading. Do more research before stating that she is not telling the truth. Watch some youtube videos about Elie Weisel as well an author of a book regarding his story of the Holocaust, he describes Dr. Mengele as being cruel faced in his book. Also, Dr. Mengele stood there looking for specimen for his experiments that he had no qualms about doing no matter how painful they may be, do you really think he is going to have a charming look on his face. Seriously the food, they were given small rations, do you really think that just because turnips are good for you that one, along with a small piece of bread is going to benefit to a healthy for you.

What is your source for this information? I had never heard about this before.

Were the typhus patients gassed separately, or were they sent to the gas chambers, along with heathy new arrivals at the camps?

Typhus is spread by lice; why didn’t the Nazis just kill the lice, with Zyklon-B, in the disinfection chambers, instead of sending the typhus patients into the homicidal gas chambers with the Jews who didn’t have typhus?

  3. Excuse me. I heard Hilda speak at my school and whether you believe her or not, her story is real. It is very unkind and disrespectful of you to speak of her story that way. Miss Mantelmacher is not a liar; she’s a survivor.

    • There are several statements made by Hilda which are indications that she was never in a concentration camp:

      1. She has no tattoo, but she claims that she was in Auschwitz, where prisoners were tattooed, unless they were transferred immediately to another camp. She was not transferred immediately.

      2. She claims that she went from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen. Most of the prisoners, who were evacuated from Auschwitz, were sent to some other camp, and then were transferred to Bergen-Belsen in the last days of the war. Those who were sent to Bergen-Belsen, before the final evacuation of the camp, were sent on trains, not marched to Bergen-Belsen.

      3. Her description of the gas chamber, which she apparently never entered, sounds like something that she read in a book. The little detail about “carrying soap and a towel” into the gas chamber comes from the stories told by the survivors of Dachau, not Auschwitz. The detail about tying the shoes together comes from the confession made by Rudolf Hoess, after he was tortured.

      4. Her description of Dr. Mengele is wrong. She describes him as having a cruel face, when every other survivor describes him as pleasant and charming. His photos show that he was handsome and charming.

      5. The Germans at Bergen-Belsen did not try to hide the bodies. There was no place to hide them. There was a typhus epidemic in the camp and the prisoners were dying faster than they could be buried. There was only one cremation oven in the camp, and no coal to burn the bodies.

    • I listened to the video of Hilda’s talk again. She starts off by telling that she was living in Czechoslovakia when she was sent to Auschwitz.

You can read about the Czech Jews on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_the_Czech_Republic

      This quote is from Wikipedia:

“Most Czech Jews were initially deported by the German occupiers with the help of local Czech Nazi collaborators to Terezin, known in German as Theresienstadt concentration camp and later killed. However many Czechoslovakian children were rescued by Kindertransport and escaped to the United Kingdom and other Allied countries. Some were reunited with their families after the war while many lost parents and relatives to the concentration camps.”

Strangely, Hilda was not sent to Theresienstadt, along with the other Czech children. Nor was she sent on a Kinder transport to the U.K.

No. Hilda, who was a child under the age of 15, was sent to Auschwitz, but she wasn’t gassed. Yet, she has every detail of the gassing procedure down pat. She should have explained that she knew every detail of the gassing procedure because she was sent INTO the gas chamber, but escaped by walking backwards out of the gas chamber, or by some other method.

Hilda was speaking at a diversity presentation. Why does every country in the world have to have diversity? Why can’t every ethnic group in the world have their own nation, without diversity? It is because diversity protects the Jews.

The Jews have been kicked out of every country where they have ever lived. I previously blogged about the Jews being kicked out of Germany in 1298 at https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/the-holocaust-of-1298-in-germany/

Why didn’t the Jews take the hint in 1298 and never come back to Germany? Why didn’t the Jews leave Germany in 1933 when Hitler came to power? Because no country in the world wanted them.

      • As a teacher of history…Terezin was simply a concentration ghetto…not a camp, per se. Terezin occupants were sent to Auschwitz for extermination. Since she was slated for the gas chamber, they wouldn’t have tattooed her. Your narrowmindness and bigotry is astounding…wow. Educate yourself and grow a heart!

  4. How can you possibly say that her story is fake?! She is the most inspirational person that I have EVER met! She is definitely not making up these stories! Just because others said that he looked kind, doesn’t mean that he was like that the whole time. “I need not know my age. Everyday is a birthday to me as long as there is food, water, and a bathroom to use.” Do you think just any survivor would say that? No. A survivor who knows exactly what went on, and feels so strongly about it would say that. Never say that she is a denier, because she is a firm believer.

    Comment by Katherine — November 24, 2013 @ 7:40 pm

    • I didn’t say that “she is a denier.” I said that she is HELPING Holocaust deniers because she is making numerous mistakes in her speeches. She has no tattoo, and she does not have a reasonable explanation for why she does not have a tattoo. She gives a complete description of how the victims were gassed, but how does she know this if she was not gassed. She should tell about how she was pulled out of the gas chamber at the last minute.

  5. Due to my experience I would try to tell apart what the Lady realy told and what the intevier asked her to say thoug “suggesting questions” like those of police when questioning an arrested person. I myself had a quarelll with a TV journalist because i refused to confirm his wiew on Terezin as a center where musicians of Europe had been hold ant than deported to Auschwitz after the 1944 film. I noted that in TV the same journalist had asked suggesting questions to a survivor just at an filmed Auschwitz visit. It is easy to questiont an aged person in a suggesting manner in order to get what will make audience. Survivors should be listend to with due respect without forcing for audience making answers. Clear?

    • Yes, the huge number of survivors is a point for deniers. The fact that so many survivors have lived to advanced age is proof that they were fed healthy food. Hilda mentions turnips. An excellent food that contributes to longevity.

      • WTF how can you be serious? Do you see the pictures? the people are underfed, for sure! You are trying to tell us that the jews who were beeing held prison deserved it or what? What could a person do to deserve this? This is just un human

        Comment by heie — November 7, 2013 @ 12:03 pm

      • There were large numbers of survivors at Auschwitz because it operated as a labor camp and prison as well as a death camp (Birkenau). The selections at the railway were made by multiple Doctors, not just
Mengele. Mengele did not transfer to Auschwitz until 1943. The numbers of survivors from dedicated death camps like Chelmno, Belzec, Treblinka and Sobibor are much lower. I’ve read maybe 10 total from Chelmno and Belzec, these are inmates who escaped while on work detail. The number for Treblinka and Sibibor is higher due to the inmates revolting in 1943. I think maybe a total of around 40 survived the war to give testimony.
