German Jew played “La Paloma” for Nazi guards as they murdered thousands of innocent Jews, Roma, gays and others at Auschwitz

You can read here about Holocaust survivor Coco Schumann, who is still alive and well, playing music in Berlin.

Coco Schumann

Coco Schumann

This quote is from the article, cited above:

Schumann was saved from the gas chambers of Auschwitz because a guard who was charged with sorting out new arrivals recognized him from Berlin’s jazz scene and placed him in a Roma [Gypsy] musical group.

Previously, at Theresienstadt, Schumann had begun playing guitar in a band known informally as “The Ghetto Swingers.” He played “La Paloma” for the German guards at Auschwitz, as they murdered thousands of innocent Jews, Roma, gays and others.

It is well known that the German people love music, and it has often been said that the Germans literally put down their violins in order to murder the Jews.  Now the truth comes out: the Germans put down their violins to kill the Jews, but they forced other Jews to play music for them while the killing was going on.

This quote is from the news article about Schumann:

… In 1943, German authorities began deporting Germans of Jewish-Christian parentage – and someone had apparently informed the authorities that Coco Schumann’s mother was Jewish. Schumann received a letter from the police authorities that he was to report to the Alexanderplatz police station. The letter didn’t state his crime. He was promptly arrested upon arrival and sent to the Gestapo. They then deported him to the concentration camps.

“Theresienstadt. Auschwitz, Dachau. No one believed that I was actually in these places,” Schumann said. “For a long time, I felt that no one would understand what I saw. I didn’t understand it myself.”

So Schumann was sent to THREE different camps, all of which allegedly had gas chambers. Yet, he wasn’t killed.  And all because he could play “swing music” which the Nazis hated because it was un-German. He’s still alive, at the age of 90, and still playing his music.

  1. Great music by great Glenn Miller!

  2. This is where I question just how much research people have done on Auschwitz. The guards are paying “that close of attention ” to the Jews coming off the freight cars? Considering how repulsed they were,I don’t even see how they’d give a damn about the Hebs coming off the cars. The gentleman that played in the orchestra ( if this is in fact what happened) is far from his scenario being unique. The Ovitz Family. They were midget ( oops! I’m sorry. Politically Correct term “little people”. whatever) performers who were Jews . 2 strikes on the right there . Well along comes that dear sweet Dr. Mengele. Yeah he pulled the family off the line. In all honesty I can’t say I remember him “experimenting ” on any of them ( be probably did on some). No. He pretty much had them for his own entertainment. No. He still aint gonna get kudos for this one. At the end of the day he’s still a worn out, used up douchebag. He wanted free entertainment,he got it. Hell. There was even a couple normal size folks that were related to the Ovitz Family that he pulled off the line. So what. It’s possible there could be more stories out there like these. It’s hard to say. Bottom line though, this guy ain’t unique in his plight.

    • Maybe Coco was carrying a guitar when he got off the train. There were 36 guards that took turns at the trains; Dr. Mengele wasn’t the only one.

When Coco got off the train, a guard might have said to him: “Do you know La Paloma?” and Coco said, “No, but if you hum a few bars, I can fake it.”

      • Come on buddy, that’s cold. Funny, but cold. Like that old adage goes ,”you either part of the problem or part of the solution.” I’ll admit,on a good day it would’ve been an impossible task to render aid to a Jew in any camp. That don’t mean the guards that knew what was happening to Jews may not been in line with uncle Adolph’s “final solution “. For the ones that would’ve wanted to help some Jews,I’m sure they knew it was an impossible task at best. I know for a fact not all krauts were down with this stunt the moron was trying to pull. Ol Max Schmeling got a rematch with Joe Louis( for the readers that don’t know, joe cleaned maxwells clock) joe put max down in round 1. Well there went his spot as one Adolph’s golden boys. The douchebag (hitler) threw his happy arse into Airborne division of the Luftwaffe . When max was in the war,he helped these 2 little Jewish girls out of harms way. That’s why I say,not all Jerry’s were behind hitlers horrors. This guard pretty much set himself up to be an accessorie. He said towards the end of the article,” I knew of the beatings and murder, but I had nothing to do with them.” Knowledge of the crimes. I’m not gonna say put the kraut in a hangman s finest noose. A couple years lockdown is reasonable enough. If you want to do a post showing ,”double standards”,do this. We were condeming and putting on trial the war criminals. Rightfully so I say,but what ever happened to this Lil stunt the soviets pulled. When the bastard red army rolled into Berlin , they told the citizens,” do not lock your doors tonight”. The reds went from house to house, raping women and murdering men. It has been called the “biggest mass rape in history”. Here’s your double standards. They are putting the nazis on trial for crimes against humanity. Shouldn’t somebody have done that with the vile red army troops? I know we couldn’t have rounded up every last commie that was Involved in the rapes, but I’m sure we could’ve nailed a few. The reds weren’t killing on a wholesale scale, but what they did is breaking the law too. That could be the textbook example of hypocrisy. To worried about offending the reds. Let the savages be offended. They screwed us a few years down the road anyhow. Exterminating Jews on a huge scale is the number one thing. The raping of all these women by the reds is number 2 . I don’t care who you are,the rape of these women is gonna get your ass on trial . A lot of lives were destroyed in that one night . The women have to live with it.

  4. Think positive – if he’s still playing music in clubs then he probably doesn’t have time to gob off to gullible children

  5. So there was a “Berlin’s Jazz scene” during WW2 (Coco Schumann was born in 1924, so he was only 15 yo when WW2 began) and SS men attending Jazz concerts in the capital of the Third Reich at war…even if Jazz music had been labelled “degenerate art” by the Nazis. Amazing!

    • This YouTube video illustrates “swing dancing” and “swing music.” The dance is also known as “jitterbug.” This type of music and dancing is unknown today, but “jive” is still danced on “Dancing with the Stars.”
