European cities are braced for violent clashes this weekend as people take to the streets to protest against Israeli military operations in Gaza.
Thousands of police are being deployed in cities across Europe with Berlin alone deploying 1,500 police officers in a response and authorities in Paris have sought to ban outright marches planned for this weekend.
The protests have triggered warnings that the spectre of anti-Semitism has returned to haunt Europe.
Protesters have attacked synagogues, smashed the windows of Jewish-owned business and torched others, in scenes [in France] disturbingly reminiscent of the 1938 Kristallnacht [in Germany]. The marchers have chanted “Jews to the gas chambers”, and Jewish people have been attacked on the streets of Berlin.
[…] A number of openly anti-Jewish Facebook groups have sprung up in the last three weeks and incidences of users posting anti-semitic messages have increased.
The number of times the phrase “dirty Jew” was posted on Twitter, for example, has gone up six-fold since Operation Protective Edge was launched, according to an analysis of data.
In the week before, there was an average of four tweets a day which included the offensive term, which went up to around 60 in the weeks after. Only a handful of them were used “innocently”.
The word Judiada, which in Spanish literally translates as Jewry but is used as a derogatory term, was tweeted almost 120 times the day Israel began its ground invasion. This compares with an average of 20 times a day in the month of June.
Israeli public figures have also been attacked, including the model Bar Refaeli, who has had people posting comments on her Instagram saying: “Times like these make u wanna wonder and wonder and wonder: why…why didn’t hitler finish what he started?” Under a photo of her playing with her dog, one wrote: “#riphitler”.
