A letter from Holocaust survivor Wolf Murmelstein

Filed under: Germany, Holocaust, World War II — Tags: , , — furtherglory @ 9:17 am

I have received the following letter from Wolf Murmelstein, one of the regular readers of my blog. Wolf was a child during World War II, and his memories of that time still haunt him. He was confined to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where his father Benjamin Murmelstein was the last Jewish elder. His father was accused of co-operating with the Nazis, which is considered to be a terrible shame for the Murmelstein family.

It is very upsetting to Wolf that most of the people who comment on my blog are revisionists and they do not think that his war-time experience was as bad as he describes it. I can relate, because I am as old as dirt and I was also a child during World War II. To me, the war time years were an unhappy time.

Read the letter from Wolf Murmelstein below:

Dear Furtherglory!

I take it that you were being ironical when you stated that I could make a lot of money talking and writing about my sad life experience as a Holocaust survivor.

I am commenting here on what suddenly has been written on your blog.

1. In 1961, my Father [Benjamin Murmelstein] wrote a book in Italian about Theresienstadt, entitled “The SHOW GHETTO of Eichmann”.

Author fees hardly covered his expenses of typing and other things connected with book publishing. The Italian Publishing House at the Frankfurt Book Show could not find any English or German Publishing House interested in publishing it.

2. In 2013, the book was published again in Italian; fees are at a very low level. Thanks to my personal connections, a Vienna based Publishing House published the German version last year; I still have not seen the sales record.

3. I have relatives and friends who really (!) survived Auschwitz and the Death Marches but avoided recalling their experience as this was painful. I listened only to what they were willing to say and avoided asking any questions.

4. I did not get any money when I was interviewed by the SPIELBERG FOUNDATION, Yale University FORTUNATE ARCHIVE and researchers.

5. In 2011, I was interviewed for the film entitled WOLF, which in 2013 got praise at a Film Festival. I declined any financial reward, so I was free to answer questions in my manner, stating my version of the facts. Furthermore, I could also decline to meet persons with whom I had been in conflict.

6. Instead of lamenting about things which I passed through, I prefer to study the historical background of events which occurred, and to reach conclusions which are not considered to be politically correct in all the various branches of Shoah Business. My studies certainly will not be sponsored by any side of the discussions; see also my comments to the blog posts.

You will be surprised but many Shoah survivors did not achieve success after WWII and, while still alive, are needy.

8. So the deportations, as the lasting defamation of my family after Liberation, had not been helpful for my career, nor for my health.

9. As with many other survivors, I too am told by doctors to avoid taking part in public debates at various meetings, and I myself – as a special survivor – am allowed only to write articles and essays.

When paying for attending a meeting where Mister so and so recalls his so called experience, then the money is wasted. Indeed the interviewers ask suggestive questions which compel the answer which many attendees are ready to accept; this in my opinion.

As you can see, freedom of mind has a heavy cost.

I feel that, in the USA, historical studies are at a poor level, not just in schools and Universities, so that is why I am explaining things on many comments on this blog.

Best Regards.
Wolf Murmelstein.

Yes, ask any “denier” currently sitting in jail.

    Comment by eah — September 7, 2015 @ 12:13 pm

    • Well, if you break the law you are going to be punished. That’s not hard to figure out. They can come to the states or Britain and spout all of the nonsense they want and not get punished. That’s not hard to figure out either.

      Comment by HCW — September 8, 2015 @ 5:39 pm

  2. I agree, history is not treated seriously in U.S. Schools.

    Comment by HCW — September 6, 2015 @ 12:55 pm

    • The history of the Holocaust, which is all that matters, is taught in kindergarten through college in America.

      Comment by furtherglory — September 6, 2015 @ 3:53 pm

      • Kindergarten? I don’t care what anybody says, that’s wrong. A child that age is not developed enough to understand it. Judas H! Let the kids be kids while they can. The worlds gonna be kicking them in the teeth soon enough. That shit must be taught in the liberal school districts. I’m in a conservative county and there’s no way that shit would fly. They’d say Jr. High at the earliest.

        Comment by Tim — September 6, 2015 @ 5:55 pm

      • My children are in elementary school right now. I help them do their homework. So far they have not taught them anything about World War 2, much less the Holocaust.

        Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 9:15 am

        • You must live in a conservative district. I can very easily picture the school districts that are run by liberals doing that.

          Comment by Tim — September 7, 2015 @ 9:34 am

          • Well, I do live in Oklahoma.

            Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 10:56 am

            • OOOOOOk-lahoma,where the wind comes sweeping down the plains. Cmon. No way in hell Oklahoma is liberal. I know tattoos are legal now. One time before I got my truck and trailer I hired a guy who lived in Oklahoma to run a couple loads of feeders to the feedlot. He got here a day early. I asked why so early. He had to get work done on a tatt. That when he told me they were illegal. I know they were made legal again. That don’t sound like a liberal state. I’ll go to Express Ranch every now and again if they have any dams or sires at auction that interest me. They’re in Yukon. I’ve seen families show up at auction. It don’t matter if their kids are 5,10,15 whatever age, they are the most well mannered I’ve ever met. There’s no way y’all are liberal

              Comment by Tim — September 7, 2015 @ 11:49 am

              • Oklahoma is the definition of conservative. The whole state votes Republican……even when our governor is the biggest moron you’ll ever meet.

                Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 1:57 pm

                • Yeah we had Rick Perry. One of the biggest idiots going, but he was one of ours.

                  Comment by Tim — September 7, 2015 @ 3:33 pm

                • I’m stuck in Oklahoma because I married an Okie.
It’s a weird state. On the one hand people here can be the most kind, most giving people you’ll ever meet.
On the other hand they can be the most intolerant people on the planet.

                  Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 4:24 pm

                • “I’m proud to be an Okie,Muskogee. A place where even squares can have a ball and white lightning still the biggest thrill of all”. Tell her we’re moving. Texas has gotten back to a lot of oil exploration we had in the 70’s. I don’t remember how I ended up here, but I hit right before the oil boom took off. I got into drilling. Started at the bottom. Roustabout. It’s a shit job,but it gets you in the door. Did that for about 12 years, then I went to work doing seismic work for Schulemberger. Dangle the money aspect in front of the Mrs . That’ll get attention real quick. I live an hour and a half west of Houston. You don’t have to worry about people going from one extreme to the next in Houston. They’re assholes 24/7. That’s why I like it out here. People are still civilized.

                  Comment by tim — September 7, 2015 @ 6:01 pm

                • Wouldn’t mind moving back to Texas but I have a career and two little boys. My wife’s family all live here so it would be hard on her to move.

                  Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 7:45 pm

                • Right on! Good for you ! Glad to hear you’ve a family. About 10 years I tried a relationship. Then she got her dream job. Raytheon. I don’t know what she does there. I know Raytheon is a defense contractor. As for me I’ll stick with my cattle. cattle are easier to figure out than guided missiles.

                • Take this kind of OT stuff somewhere else — eg exchange private email addresses.

                • You’re what ? The forum tsar? It’s good to break from the topic here and there. It gives everyone breathing room . Don’t know wether you’ve noticed this Susie, but shit gets a bit heated. Don’t hurt to stray from the trail to settle things down. If it someway hurts or offends your fragile sensibilities,I don’t really give a shit. Take your little piss ant hurt feelings and take a flying f**kin leap through a donut hole. Last I checked, this was FG’s BBQ. FG says to put the breaks on this,I’ll do it. Far as I’m concerned you can shut the f**k up. Here’s another advantage to this. By doing this every now and again, you’ll get to know your sparing partner. In the process of doing that, you’ll have better insite as to who they are. Which in turn will give you a better appreciation where they’re coming from. Wars have started over lack of understanding. Have a good day sugar britches

                  Comment by Tim — September 8, 2015 @ 9:37 am

                • Eah, blow it out your pie hole. We weren’t talking to you. If you see a string you don’t want to follow than ignore it.

                  Comment by HCW — September 8, 2015 @ 3:46 am

                • I told him this is a way to better understand your antagonist. I respect the hell outta Wolfman. He was ground level when all this shit was going on. I’ve told him that he’s living history. Add that into the formula and you can see why he is so passionate about this subject. I may not agree with all his evidence he presents, but I do respect the hell outta the man. You know you gave away your age somewhat. I thought I was the only one who said ,” pie hole”

                  Comment by Tim — September 8, 2015 @ 9:50 am

                • I’m 45, Tim. I always loved the expression. As for Eah, he doesn’t have to follow threads that he isn’t interested. Besides, sometimes I enjoy having a conversation about something other than how many Jews died or who was worse, the Germans or the Soviets.

                  Comment by HCW — September 8, 2015 @ 10:10 am

                • Okay. Here’s one. You’re probably up on this more than I am. I just read something about refugees pouring into Germany. It made it sound like the entire town. Said they’d been waiting all night long for the train to arrive. They had food, clothing and gifts for the newly arrived refugees. I couldn’t help but think this was a PR stunt of something along the lines of,” everybody is welcome here in Germany . We love all people. We’re not like the mean ol nazis”. This whole thing seemed a bit to convenient

                  Comment by Tim — September 8, 2015 @ 10:34 am

                • Hey “Susie”? You’re a fucking juvenile ass.

                  Comment by eah — September 8, 2015 @ 12:30 pm

                • Me? I’m not the one with the limited vocabulary. Last check all ages are welcome here. You’re the one with the infantile attitude. Matthew 5:29 “if thy eye offends thee, pluck it and cast it to the side”. If you don’t like what you see, move the f*** on. Then again,I don’t have to explain the first dam thing to you Shirley

                  Comment by Tim — September 8, 2015 @ 12:38 pm

                • Dear Tim,

I did not ask you to explain anything to me. I asked you to take all the OT comments — and they were NUMEROUS, far too many — to some other private setting. Because NO ONE else is interested in seeing it, much less reading it. This is common internet courtesy. Which I see is foreign to you — gee, what a surprise.

                  Comment by eah — September 8, 2015 @ 12:50 pm

                • You’re a gem Katherine. It’s a proclivity of mine not to take advice from someone who can not set the example. You’re adorable ! You speak about courtesy, yet you talk like you’re in a card game in the back of a bar ( need reminding). It’s quite simple. If you don’t like what you read, move on. There’s plenty of other topics. I explained. I don’t believe this is “your” site. Therefore it’s demonstrable, you don’t say anything. FG speaks up,then so be it. Truth be known, you’re still probably wet behind the proverbial “ears” . I figured out years back,by being in a war I was stupid enough to enlist for, knowing who the other person was would’ve made a big difference. Like I said, move on if you don’t want to know somebody. This just helps to understand the other person. It’s pat of communication.

                  Comment by Tim — September 8, 2015 @ 4:31 pm

                • I haven’t really followed the refugee story as much as I should. I’ve been busy with the beginning of school, end of Summer, etc. Plus I’ve been busy with work.
Probably someone who lives there is a better source….if you can get past the nonsense.

                  Comment by HCW — September 8, 2015 @ 5:43 pm

                • I don’t know. It struck me as a bit odd. Almost like the thing was staged. I mean you’ve got a new generation of krauts that are still being made to feel guilty for the sins of a couple earlier generations. No matter how you cut it,it ain’t right. I’ve read on here somebody don’t give their last name, because they’re related to a war criminal. Ya can’t pick your family. The way I look at it,that person is his own man. He is to be judged on his own merits. . Getting back to welcoming the immigrants,I don’t know about you, but I don’t plan on standing on the banks of the Rio Grande, welcoming the Mexicans as they hit American soil

                  Comment by Tim — September 8, 2015 @ 7:11 pm

                • It’s quite simple.

Apparently not to you. The “simple” thing is this: it is rude to pollute a blog with lots of OT comments. As you (and HCW) were doing.

Yet instead of just acknowledging that, you repeat the same crap — “FG speaks up,then so be it” — like if your mommy doesn’t tell you to stop being rude you won’t stop. The rest of your comment is nothing but incoherent, irrelevant garbage — “It’s a proclivity of mine…”, “Therefore it’s demonstrable,…” — etc etc. Whatever. Buffoon.

                  Comment by eah — September 9, 2015 @ 3:30 am

                • Would you please ! Jeez o Petes! You must enjoy hearing yourself talk. I swear. You sound like some old nag. Ragging on and on. Get off your soap box Sally . Take it elsewhere. Jesus H . How bad did you get your arse kicked in school? Shut up you dam philistine. You made your point

                  Comment by Tim — September 9, 2015 @ 6:36 am

                • And you’re too dumb to see the contradiction in your own nonsense:

                  Therefore it’s demonstrable,you don’t say anything.

Yeah, OK, it’s “demonstrable” (a HS English teacher would notate this with “ww” = wrong word). So you can say whatever you want about whatever topic you want, in comment after comment, but me? — I can’t say anything about all of that. No, that would be one comment too many — I shouldn’t say anything.

  3. So it is all about money then Wolf…

    Comment by Clent — September 6, 2015 @ 12:11 pm

    • Where did you get that? Wolf said he didn’t get paid when he gave interviews, etc.

      Comment by HCW — September 6, 2015 @ 12:57 pm

  4. What has happened to that other German named Stolpin (?) who used to comment here? The fellow who lived in Dachau after it was liberated and insisted the gas chamber there had been used on Jews and subnormals.

    Comment by who dares wings — September 6, 2015 @ 11:23 am

    • You mean Herbert Stolpmann? I think that he is still alive, but maybe too old to care about the Holocaust any more.

      Comment by furtherglory — September 6, 2015 @ 3:58 pm

      • FG
Yes I am still alive and follow the comments daily on your blog. The expression and comments about the Holocaust is a bit tiresome, I myself am able to go back to 1942 when I first heard as a youth, that “we, the German Armed Forces, are committing ‘VÖLKERMORD’ (genocide) on the Eastern Front”. A more appropriate expression. I always pricked my ears when relations come on furlough from the regions of Bialystock and Mogilev in Russia.
The other point I would like to make as previously mentioned, I had a rather Nordic looking aunt by marriage, unfortunately she did not have a Taufschein, you guessed it she was a Jewess and in many ways influenced me by her religion which affected me to this very day. Furthermore I met my future wife in a Jewish Household in London, who were ever so helpful, in us migrating to NZ. Anyone can trace Mrs Ruth Lawrence on the internet under her maiden name Ruth Langer, (a an interesting story as she refused to take part in the 1936 Olympic Games.
To summarize, I can hardly say anything detrimental against Jews with whom I ever lived with or met, they were enterprising and added not only to their own wealth but to the countries like Germany and others.

        Comment by Herbert Stolpmann — September 6, 2015 @ 5:52 pm

    • I believe that you might confuse me with some else, claiming that I ever stated the Gas Chamber in Dachau had been used to gas Jews. It never was used for homicidal purposes, yet I have extensively blogged about the plight of those people incarcerated in camps with a total of over 140 post under ‘Dachau KZ which I translated from primary sources into English, which you can read at any time.

      Comment by Herbert Stolpmann — September 6, 2015 @ 11:07 pm

      • Mr. Stolpmann, where can I find your blog? You sound interesting.

        Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 1:59 pm

        • Never mind, I just saw it.

  5. In the words of Fonzi,”exactamundo”. Here is my best evidence about what I’ve been telling you Wolfman. FG knows you’re a well spoken, educated person. FG runs your letter as a story. That’s why I tend to follow you,FG and the Herminator, more than anyone else here. You made the comment at the end of letter that institutions of learning here in the states are not all that. You said they lack in teaching history. I agree a 100%. I’ll admit history books can’t put everything about the holocaust into a book. So much new stuff pops up all the time. The 3 of yall can put in,what the historians didn’t

    Comment by tim — September 6, 2015 @ 10:18 am

    • Dear Tim! I mean that studying better European History – and Geographie as well – the historical background of WWII and Holocaust would be clear and many stupid and hurting discussions would be avoided.

      Comment by Wolf MURNELSTEIN — September 6, 2015 @ 2:12 pm

      • “Discussion”. The key word wolfman. I done told ya a thousand times, you one of the 3 people I listen to on here. You were there. I told you history class mentioned the holocaust. That was about it. Remember “Hogans Heros”? I thought it was and still is a funny show. You got Sgt. Schultz and Col. Klink. Both show characters were a couple idiots. However in real life, some of the characters on the show would’ve been war criminals. Tell you what. I got the magnum opus for ya. Go to this search engine. “” . When you get there enter this search term. “mad magazine spoof on hogans heros “. When the search results pop up,scroll down to the result that says,” mad TV Hogans heros parody-free servers”. This came out in the mad magazine back in ’67. I remember buying that issue and reading it. When you get on that web page go to the bottom. There’ll be 2 blocks of animation. It called “hockmans heros. Read it. Now when I look at it,that was done in bad taste. Yeah it was wrong. Back in ’67 no one gave it a second thought. All we knew of the holocaust was from the history books. What the history books taught us didn’t amount to dick.? You want people to have a better understanding, then impart some of your knowledge on us lower life forms. Like it or not,you were there. That means one thing. You have an obligation to share that knowledge with the people that weren’t . Stop with your ,” I’m not the world book encyclopedia”. You’re the one that’s always giving up information on here. Seems like you’re trying to educate people. I’m a cattleman. Most people think meat comes from the grocery store. They think mommy and daddy cow make a little cow. When the calf grows up,you fire up the BBQ pit. Wrong! I have to know cattle genetics, how the commodities market works. I have to about the mineral content and makeup of soil. I have to understand feed composition. Come up with a ration that is suited to my calves when they hit the feedlot to be finished. My point there is if someone wanted to know about was goes into their steak before it hit hits the meat market,I’ll gladly tell them. When it comes to the holocaust, you’re in a unique position buddy. You’re what people call “living history”. Share it with people. Like I said though, check out that hogans heros spoof. I read it now and I see it was cold and done in bad taste.

  6. “Many Shoah survivors are needy.”

Yes, and many people who weren’t involved in the Shoah are needy. Are Shoah survivors some kind of special KIND of needy?

Help those you care to help (if and as you can). And don’t let anyone MAKE you help them.

    Comment by Jett Rucker — September 6, 2015 @ 9:31 am

    • What do You mean in this obscure message? I do not understand it. As many commentators here are sayings that we survivors receive a lot of money pressed from Germany I simply made clear things. Certainly there are many needy persons around; it is not my guilt that certain politicy makers cares more on pure prestige projects as on helping people to cope with difficulties.

      Comment by Wolf MURNELSTEIN — September 6, 2015 @ 10:08 am

    • One of the most interesting things I see from deniers is how much money the US gives to Isreal.

I’ve added 2012 budget for foreign aid.

Isreal is 2nd on the list…..Afghanistan is the largest recipient….by a lot. Next is Isreal. The interesting thing is, out of the top recipients, all of them are Muslim countries except for Isreal. So, the U.S. is funding Muslim states, including Egypt. Egypt has fought multiple wars against Isreal. So, if the Jews are in control of everything, why are funding an enemy of Isreal?

      Comment by HCW — September 7, 2015 @ 2:23 pm

      • Because we have a Muslim president who hates America and Israel. All the holocaust stuff aside,Israel is the only country in that region that likes us. Our wonderful president wants to piss them off to no end.
