Should the Confederate flag be banned in America because “Black lives matter”?

The following quote is from a newspaper article which you can read in full at http://www.theledger.com/article/20060122/news/601220429?tc=ar

Begin quote

The beginning [of] What is now called the Confederate flag was never the official banner of the Confederate States of America, whose secession prompted the Civil War.

It was actually a battle flag first used in 1861 by the Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by Gen. Robert E. Lee. Other military units followed suit, and eventually the flag — a diagonal blue cross inlaid with white stars against a red field — became the de facto battle flag of the Confederate army. Troops fought under a square flag. The rectangular version now familiar to us was employed by the Confederate Navy and known as the “naval jack.”

The cross [on the flag]

The blue cross, also known as a “saltire,” derives from the St. Andrews cross, the main element of Scotland’s national flag. According to legend, the first century Christian martyr St. Andrew considered himself unworthy to be executed in the same manner as Jesus and convinced his Roman executioners to use a different cross for his crucifixion. St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and the saltire in the Confederate battle flag reflects the Scottish ancestry of many [American] Southerners.

The stars [on the flag]

The flag’s 13 white stars signify the 11 Confederate states — South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee — plus allies Kentucky and Missouri.

The memorials [ceremonies]

For several decades after the Civil War, the Confederate battle flag was seen mostly at memorial ceremonies for Southern soldiers. About 1920, though, the flag took on a more cultural meaning.

Students at the University of Alabama brandished the flag to celebrate a football victory over the University of Washington in 1926. Fans of other Southern schools — most notably the University of Mississippi — soon adopted the flag as an unofficial pennant. Historian John M. Coski reports the University of Florida adopted an orange-and-blue version of the Confederate banner as its official flag in 1952. [the flag was also displayed a the University of Missouri when I attended this school]

New identity

Southerners serving overseas during World War II displayed the flag to project regional identity. Around the same time, the Ku Klux Klan adopted the flag as a symbol of its quest for white domination. Southern politicians, such as Strom Thurmond, a 1948 candidate for president from the Dixiecrat Party, also employed the flag as a totem of resistance to forced racial integration.

State flag

The official flags of Florida and some other Southern states include versions of the St. Andrew’s cross. Florida Gov. William Bloxham, a Confederate veteran, successfully urged the Legislature to add the saltire to an existing state flag in 1900, but it’s not clear if the new design was based on the Confederate flag.

The flag and the law

Florida statutes protect the Confederate flag and its replicas from desecration “by word or act.” The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected similar laws protecting the American flag from burning or mutilation as unconstitutional. Randall Marshall, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, said he knows of no attempted prosecutions under the law protecting the Confederate flag. Florida law also forbids the depiction of the flag for commercial gain, but that law is rarely if ever enforced.

End quote

In my humble opinion, Black Lives do Matter, but not to the extent that white people must give up their history and traditions.

  1. Keep the banner burn the flag… History can’t be changed. What next? Take my Cross down off my wall?

  2. It depends what you mean by “ban,” as this is a very inflammatory word, with the apparent meaning that one will not be able to display something on their own personal property, which does not appear to be the case. As you somewhat note, a display of any flag on one’s own person or property is still protected by freedom of speech. Therefore, no “ban” as such is threatened.

What appears to be the issue is that there are still government and public buildings that display the Confederate flag. This is entirely different from a private citizen doing so, as a government/public building displaying it gives the impression of values (or threats) being made by that public institution or government office. If a “ban” as such would only apply to use by or on government/public buildings, the use of the word without this qualification is inflammatory and misleading.

    • There’s only one state in this union that flys the stars and bars. The state of Mississippi has it as part of the state flag. Get your facts straight before you open your piehole about that. You gonna cry next about the the flag of my state? Texas. You gonna say it offends Mexicans, because that’s the flag that was flying when general Sam Houston sent Santa Anna and his worthless army packing back to Mexico . That would never happen. Simply for the fact we had Mexicans fighting for Texas . Seguin,Texas . Named after Juan Seguin. He fought under General Houston. Wake up buddy

      Comment by Tim — March 15, 2016 @ 12:42 pm

      • State sponsored, sure, that’s my point. However, there are other states where it’s flown on some government buildings and NOT state-sponsored. Which, is, um, my point. (I believe a recent news story about a citizen climbing up to remove a confederate flag was not Mississippi, was it? NOT on part of an official state flag, genius.) So, are you suggesting that there is a “ban” being considered for private citizens on private property? If so, based on what, pray tell? Yet “I’m” the one opening my “pie hole” when you’re completely baselessly accusing me of having some problem with a state flag? How lovely that you have nothing better to do than make baseless accusations.

        Comment by Halli — March 15, 2016 @ 1:36 pm

        • Where are you from? You certainly have no clue. South Carolina was the only other state. It’s not now though. State sponsored don’t have shit to do with the price of tea in China. It’s about honoring the dead, for fighting for what they believed in. That includes blacks that fought for the confederacy. Name one state, other than “Ol Miss”,that flys the stars and bars. If you’ve seen one at another state building than the one in question here,it’s probably because you saw those idiots from the invisible empire, having one of their stupid ass membership drives,in front of a government building. They always have the stars and bars at their piddly ass rallies. Guess what? This country allows them to do that . I don’t like them or what they stand for,but unlike you,I recognize they have that right. Like I said. The star and bars means,”heritage. Not hate.” You’ve got to be a liberal. Everything is all hunky dorry with you as long as someone’s opinion or beliefs don’t differ from yours. Y’all are like spoiled little babies. Y’all can’t man the f–k up,so you start to cry. Cmon. Fork over your “solid proof “. I ain’t talking about the so called proof the pukes at CNN or CNBC want to shovel down your throat. Those assholes,”are” government sponsored.

          Comment by Tim — March 15, 2016 @ 2:16 pm

          • So where, exactly, are you seeing any possibility of any “ban” on the use of any flag by a private person on private property?? Give me some “solid proof” of what on earth you’re even afraid of happening, much less about how you are accusing me of ridiculous things that I obviously have never claimed, when YOU are the one doing this!

            Comment by Halli — March 15, 2016 @ 3:03 pm

            • Also, by the way, since you mention “in front of government buildings,” it’s important to note that “time, place, and manner” restrictions ARE Constitutional, as long as they’re applied evenly to all people and groups operating or wishing to operate in a manner going against a “time, place, or manner” restriction. This means that as long as such restrictions are properly and evenly enforced, it DOES NOT MATTER who the group is. If you have any examples of time, place, or manner restrictions being improperly enforced, obviously this would need to be corrected.

Again, I don’t even know what your point is. You keep agreeing with me that private citizens are allowed to display anything they want. So WHAT are you railing against in your absurdly angry comments??

              Comment by Halli — March 15, 2016 @ 3:07 pm

              • You obviously missed what I said. I told you I don’t agree with the Klan( that’s the “invisible empire” I mentioned. It’s another name for the Klan),but they have a right to free assembly and expression in this country. That means they can fly the flag at their little rallies, because it’s freedom of expression. What you just said,I previously mentioned. Say something other than what I said. Go back and read what I wrote. It’s the same damn thing you just said. Jesus H Christ! Don’t forget to give me names of government buildings,”you said”,flys the stars and bars. You bought it up. So back it up

                Comment by Tim — March 15, 2016 @ 3:44 pm

            • What does “private property” and “government property” have to do with anything? You still never answered where you’re from. I don’t think you’re American, much less a southerner. If you were listening, you would’ve heard me tell you the reason it’s on the flag for the state of Mississippi. You have no concept of what it means to fight and die for something. I on the other hand,no what it’s like to fight in a war. I’m waiting for you to tell “me”,where these government buildings are at,that fly the stars and bars other than the state of Mississippi. This is “not” about “banning a flag because black lives matter”. I said earlier,”let’s get Washington and Jefferson of the money. They were slave owners. Everybody “thinks ” the flag that represented the south in the war, represented slavery. I doesn’t ! Yes the states that fought for the flag, were slave states. What it really came down to,was we didn’t want to live like the north. The north has dick for traditions. Quite simply cause they don’t know what lifestyle they want. Down here it’s yes mam and no mam. The family still gathers at the supper table. If I’ve just met a lady,I’ll address her as mrs. Or miss. If I’m given permission to address her by her first name, miss will come before her first name. The Yankees didn’t have the first clue about that shit. That’s what we were fighting to preserve before they came down here and tried to get us into their rude way of doing things. I’m trying to show you what that flag represents. I’m still waiting to see what government buildings you’ve seen the flag at,because you haven’t. You’re talking about something you know nothing about. I’m showing the real meaning of the flag. I told you blacks fought for that flag. So should the blacks piss on the memory of those fine black men that fought for the south? Stop dicking around with all your words and make your point. I’m making a point for why the flag should stay. If you’re not on the same page as me,then adios mi amigo.

              Comment by Tim — March 15, 2016 @ 3:37 pm

              • So how exactly are you (and furtherglory) suggesting that there could be a “ban”? You seem to understand that there is no threat of private citizens being “banned” from displaying whatever they want. THIS IS MY ONLY POINT. So WHAT are your long diatribes even relating to??

                Comment by Halli — March 16, 2016 @ 9:19 am

  3. And now the southerners view. There’s not a lot of places here in Texas where you ain’t gonna see the stars and bars. You won’t see too many in Austin, because our wonderful state capital is full of liberal pukes. The great state of Mississippi still has the “stars and bars” on her state flag. Yes. Slavery lit the fuse for the civil war. People forget one thing though. The north was “modernizing”. We here in the south wished to stay “traditional”. The north wanted to push their way of life off on us. That’s BS. If we’re gonna split the proverbial “hairs” on this issue, then I want President Washington taken off the dollar bill. He was a slave owner. No gray area there. I want Thomas Jefferson off the two dollar bill. You got it! He owned slaves. My point to that shit is this. Blacks don’t like the stars and bars, because it represents a painful time in our nations history. What . Washington and Jefferson ain’t a painful reminder of that time? I don’t see the blacks complain when the carry around president Washington in their billfolds or purses. My wife’s late father was in the ranching business just like me. Our houses are not like in the suburbs where they sit right on the street. You have to drive a half a mile to reach my front door. My wife’s fathers house was a little less. There was a black farmer that was always at the feed store when her father went there. He was showing Delvin some pictures of the new deck he built in his front yard. He had 3 poles in his front yard. American flag on one. Texas state flag on another and the stars and bars on the third. This black man saw the picture and told her dad,”I’m gonna come over there and tear down that rebel flag “. He told this idiot,”first you gotta make it past Hank and Duke ( his Bull Mastiffs). Then you got 1885 feet worth of driveway to cover. If you can make it up that driveway and tear down that flag before I get my rifle and shoot you, then your welcome to it”. Yes. We southerners are that protective of the stars and bars. I’ll concede. You got the idiots over at the “invisible empire” (KKK) that fly the stars and bars, but they do it for the wrong reason. When I fly it,it’s flown to honor the memory of the men who fought and died for the south….wether they were black or white. Threw you a curve there, didn’t I. Yes. Blacks fought for the south . However the black historians don’t want that remembered. At least the liberal ones. If anything,I feel the blacks should get their share of the spotlight on that issue. We have the “Daughters of the Confederacy “. They honor the stars and bars, yet people call them racists. To be a member of that organization, you “have to be” a blood relative of someone who fought in the war between the states on the side of the south ( okay. That’s probably demonstrable). Some people have called them the female KKK. They’re just making sure the sacrifice made by their relatives of that period are not forgotten. It’s a sad fact, but the first thing that enters people’s minds when they see the stars and bars is,hate. Well we got the idiots at the Klan to thank for that. I can’t speak for the coon asses( Cajuns) of Louisiana . They elected David Duke to be a Rep for Louisiana. He was the Grand Wizard for the KKK. Go figure. He’s a big ass anti Semitic too. We have a motto for the rebel flag in the south. “Heritage. Not hate”. The Daughters and Mississippi state flag are two things to support that. I knew a Cuban gentleman years back when I was in Florida . He had a little Cuban flag he hung on his rear view mirror in his car. I told him he’s flying a communist flag in America. He told me it makes him sad that the flag now represents a communist nation, but it represents the Cuba “he knew”as a boy growing up in Cuba . Now this was the old Cuban flag ( the new one hadn’t even been thought of yet). Well he does live in a country where he is free to do that. Just like I’m free to fly my stars and bars. This whole thing revolves around liberal pukes wanting the country run ,”their way”. F–k em I say. Okay. The rebel flag causes painful memories. What about people that stage reenactment sod the civil war? That’s not painful? It don’t remind people that slavery was one of the big issues of the war ( I don’t know why people want to reenact a war for. I sure as hell got enough of Nam when I was in country. I don’t want to reenact that). I’m guessing they can’t get any mileage out of shutting down reenactment soft the war. Here’s one not too many people know about. Some slaves (not all) were actually paid a wage. They got paid for “overtime” if the slaves were leased out to other land owners. I shit you not. How the hell you think some slaves became land owners at the end of the war. Let’s not forget that at the end of the war, slave owners were paid for each slave they had to free. No. The blacks and liberals want something to piss and moan about. So they nail the stars and bars. Half the shit being done for blacks now days,is done out of “white guilt”. I ain’t got shit to feel guilty about. My family didn’t have the money to afford slaves. Why do you think we have a ( incompetent) black president? I’ve got black friends. They never say anything about my rebel flag. The church I attend has a lot of blacks in the congregation. You wanna see real racists,go up north. The Yankees make us southerners look like small potatoes in that department.

    • Miss Diane. Where you been? I missed you. I ain’t had anybody to reel me in when I get out of line. Thank you for your understanding on this issue. Like I always say when it comes to the stars and bars. “Heritage. Not hate”.

  5. Just another attempt of the PC crowd to force their nonsense onto us.
The whole issue is brought upon us by the Jews who have a thing about white identity and any group of people that want to show their pride (other than black, brown, whatever ) who they consider whites racists. Hard to believe it has got to this point today but this is how the Jews work to stop any majority group (whites) from doing what they should be doing showing their Nationalist pride. I might add, I think all Nationalities should be proud of who they are but it becomes a racist issue when whites do it.

Just because you found a racist blog to post on doesn’t make you any less morally repugnant in accusing entire races of things you feel some individuals of those races may have had some part in, without even any support of that, no less. Regarding the “issue” of this article, see my comment above.

      • Where you from Halli? You sure a shit ain’t southern. You’re turning this into a personal attack. You don’t know shit about southern heritage or the stars and bars. Your no better than the liberal pukes that don’t understand what the CSA flag actually represents. They’re coming down on the flag just for the mileage. Candy ass babies is all they are. The liberal pukes love the freedoms this country provides, just so long as you don’t go against what “their idea” of what those freedoms “should be”. They think they’re the “21st century carpetbaggers “. Gonna come down from Yankee land and tell us how to live. Anything north of the Mason/Dixon,is totally f–ked up any way. Hell. We’re doing great here in Texas (the south). Give you a passage from the bible . “If thy eye offends the, pluck it out and cast it to the side”. Basically if you don’t like this site or its readers, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out . FG runs a neutral site. Botha sides of the argument ar welcome on this site. I read it,because I was pretty much illiterate on the subject of the holocaust. I speak with people from both sides here. Sometimes I agree with the folks that are for the holocaust, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I agree with the deniers, sometimes I don’t . You’re gonna be hard pressed to call this a racists site. There probably racists o. This site. Hell. They’re everywhere. You can’t say this is a racists site. I’ve seen where FG will yield the floor to Wolfman. He was a child at a concentration camp. His facts are not only welcome here, but they’re needed here. FG has run entire posts on something he may or may not have said. I don’t always agree with everything he says, but I do listen to the man. That’s called being open minded. Show me a racists that says he’s open minded. I’m not gonna call him a liar. I’m gonna call him a God damn liar. I spent my teen years growing up in Orlando . I was there long before they turned it into a fantasyland dominated by a rodent. Racism ran amuck. My moma was raised in depression era Alabama. The Klan pretty much owned that state back then. You don’t have a clue about racism. Hell I’ve seen FG threaten to ban some people on here, because they were the real deal. Abusive racists.

            • Yeah. I’m horning in on your conversation. Private citizen flying the flag ain’t got dick to do with anything. I used my wife’s late father as an example. It didn’t have shit to do with wether a private citizen could fly the flag or not. I put that out there to show you just how hot the topic of the rebel flag is. I guess I should’ve told you a bit about the black man in question there. I see him at the feed store a lot too. He’s an idiot. He’s the one that blames the white man for all his problems. I consistently receive a yield grade score of 4 from the USDA when the carcass of my cattle are graded out. This moron is lucky if he gets a 3. He complains the USDA gives his cattle a shit number because he’s black. No. He gets a low score because not only does he “not ” understand cattle genetics,he don’t wanna take the time to learn. The same thing goes for the rebel flag. They use it as an excuse to say that’s why the black man is being held down. In all fairness,I will say, that’s the liberal blacks that cry about the world being against them. The blacks I associate with, are conservatives. They don’t cry about the flag holding them back. Now. One last time. Where are you from?

If you think the “issue” is not being southern, WHAT, exactly ARE you afraid of?? HAS there been any possibility of private citizens not being able to display the flag on their own personal property? Of course not. You and furtherglory just like making up problems to yell about, and then (you, here, not him) blaming any and all problems, including said made up ones, on “the Jews.” I don’t give one whit about what flag you personally fly, especially a nasty, racist “gentleman” like yourself, and nothing you or anyone else has said has even remotely suggested that your right to do so is threatened. Get over yourself.

(On another topic, so your main source of information on the Holocaust is this site? Yet you now consider yourself “literate” on it? Much less that there are people that are “for the Holocaust?” Would this mean people that are glad it happened? I used my wife’s late father as an example as to just how much a southerner is going to do to defend that flag. Okay. One more time slick. I’m defending why the stars and bars should remain on the state flag of Ol Miss( that’s the nickname for state of Mississippi). Don’t try to make yourself look like a hero by dragging other people from this site, into our discussion. Stick to the subject. Basically it’s not exclusive to the university. I have a couple friends. One in Yazoo city. The other one is in Bruce. When they speak of the state, they’ve both refered to her as “Ol Miss”. Kinda like you didn’t realize,Burlington Northern was in Alliance,Nebraska. You thought North Platte was the only location in Nebraska. Hell I thought Alliance was the only location for BNRR. • FG . I do have a question about “black lives matter”. How does that have to do with the stars and bars. That (black lives matter) started because the liberal blacks are crying their same song about how,”I’m the poor, always being taken advantage of and abused by the police, black man”. The argument for the flag has been around for quite some time now. I say libera, because I know conservative blacks. They’re the same as their white conservative brothers and sisters. I have a black friend at the Sheriffs Department. When the Panthers ( the black version of the KKK I’ve always maintained ) were threatening to start shooting every cop they see,his response was,” good. I’ve got the latest scope,on my new rifle. I’ve been wanting to see how well it will perform. White lives matter too. A Harris County deputy a few weeks back was filing his patrol car up at the start of his shift. This piece of shit black bastard walks up behind him and empties the clip of a 9mm into the deputy. That was the first encounter these 2 ever had with each other. That lil SOBis trying to get off it. His lawyer claims he is incompetent to stand trial. Really? He ran home to mommy crying ,”when the cops get here. Tell them I was here all night. White lives matter too. Bring that up. The liberal blacks think that since we got a black president (okay. Half black),they can get away with anything. Houston is about as bad,if not worse, than NYC,Chicago or L A. The men and women that work H Town and the surrounding area, place a target on their chest, every time they put that badge on. Yes. There’s good cops and abusive cops, but I see the difference. Just like there’s bad blacks and good blacks. Maybe I should take the stand that the liberal blacks do and say all blacks are bad. They’re the ones that have stymied race relations. Need proof? Shelia Jackson Lee. Let’s see. The song by Ice T. Cop killer. The irony there is he plays a cop on TV. I’m sick of hearing about black lives matter. I’m gonna start a movement. “Cops lives matter” ( that encompasses all cops regardless of race). After that maybe,” get your hunting license. Panther season is open”. Personally that asshole that chicken shit black bastard that murderd that deputy in such a cowardly way,I hope his black ass goes to Huntsville and gets the needle. Before I forget, what’s your view on the flag. I know Missouri was a state that played both sides during the war ( no offense, but if I was the south or north,I wouldn’t have trusted Missouri). They pretty much had a war, within a war. People in that state were fighting each other, depending on which side they backed. I’ve stated the stars and bars flew while slavery was an institution. For that matter the American flag was flying when slavery was a popular thing up north. Washington and Jefferson held slaves. Don’t see anyone bitching to have them removed from our currency. I don’t care if Washington “is” the father of our country. He was a slave owner

            • Please refer to your own comment. The “subject” is the Confederate flag. As I noted in my own comment ON THE SUBJECT, there is not even a possibility of a “ban” on private citizens displaying whatever they want, so the use of the word “ban” is irrelevant and ridiculous.

Jim Rizoli, WHO I WAS RESPONDING TO, instead, decided to completely LEAVE the subject and blame any perceived oversensitivity by blacks on “the Jews.” Perhaps you should follow a comment’s thread rather than assuming that a reply TO A COMMENT is the one “dragging up other” topics, when it was the ORIGINAL COMMENT that did so and is being responded to. Good grief.

              • I’m still waiting to hear where you reside. You’re the one that said this was a racist site. You don’t have the first damned clue. Do you! This is not a racist site. I explained to you, that FG has done articles that were exclusive to wolf. I don’t think a racist site would let that happen. Let alone have a Jew voice their opinion. That’s why I got off topic. To correct your ass. Next time you open your piehole. Tell me where your from
