The plight of the Hungarian Jews first came to the attention of the world when, on April 7, 1944, two Jewish prisoners, Rudolf Vrba, aka Walter Rosenberg, and Alfred Wetzler, managed to escape from Birkenau, the infamous Auschwitz II camp where the gas chambers were located. They made their way back to Slovakia, where Vrba’s mother was still living, and wrote a report which soon reached the hands of the Pope, the King of Sweden, and even President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Hungarian government and Admiral Horthy were informed that Vrba and Wetzler had proof that the Jews were being gassed at Auschwitz. Vrba, who worked at the Judenrampe, the train platform where the Jews disembarked before the railroad line was extended, had counted the number of Jews who arrived at Birkenau and were then never seen again. Vrba’s estimate was that 1,765,000 Jews had been gassed at Auschwitz-Birkenau by March 1944, just before he made his escape.
The current estimate of the number of Jews deaths, from all causes, at Auschwitz-Birkenau is 1.1 million. Why was Vrba’s estimate so wrong?

Two other prisoners, Arnost Rosin and Czeslaw Mordowicz, also escaped from Auschwitz at the end of May and wrote a report which told about the beginning of the “Hungarian Action” and the mass murder of the Jews.
Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr. and Judge Samuel I. Rosenman, two Jewish advisors to President Roosevelt, urged him to intervene, according to Robert E. Conot, who wrote “Judgment at Nuremberg.” Roosevelt threatened that “Hungary’s fate will not be like any other civilized nation’s…unless the deportations are stopped.” With a population of 125 million people in America in 1933, when the Nazis first came to power, the USA had plenty of room to absorb all of the approximately 15.6 million Jews in the world, but the American Congress would not change the laws that limited Jewish immigrants until 1948.
On July 2, American planes bombed Budapest and its railroad facilities in an attempt to stop the deportation of the Hungarian Jews, according to Conot. The King of Sweden and the Pope also intervened and put pressure on Horthy to stop the deportation. The bombing of Auschwitz was briefly considered, but was rejected.
On October 8, 1944, Hungary formally sought peace terms with the Allies, according to the book entitled “The Last Days,” which was published in conjunction with a documentary by the same name, filmed by Steven Spielberg. Hitler had anticipated this move, and the SS protected the pro-Nazi Hungarian leaders of the Arrow Cross fascist political party from arrest while Otto Skorzeny, the famous German commando, and his elite unit kidnapped Horthy’s son. Horthy’s coup was stopped and the Germans forced Horthy to appoint Ferenc Szalasi of the fascist Arrow Cross party as the prime minister of Hungary.

Adolf Eichmann then returned to Hungary and began negotiations with the Hungarian government to deport 50,000 Hungarian Jews to Germany to work in building anti-tank barriers and in the munitions factories in the concentration camps. Due to the destruction of the railways by Allied bombing, the Jews were forced to march on foot to the border between Austria and Hungary where they were then put on trains and taken to various concentration camps, including Mauthausen, Gunskirchen and Buchenwald. Hungarian women were also sent on the march and eventually reached the main Dachau camp, where they were then sent to one of the Dachau sub-camps.
One of the 7,000 Budapest Jews, who were sent to Auschwitz in 1944 and then transferred to Buchenwald or other camps, was the famous Hungarian novelist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002, Imre Kertész . In several novels, Kertész wrote about the Holocaust, although not about his personal experience.

Is there ever gonna come a time when the Jews are gonna let this drop? I thought my ex wife was the overkill queen. Jews got her beat by a long shot . It’s like “you’re really,really killin me. The need to legitimize the Israeli rogue nation is not a dead horse, Tim. The Jewish colonization of Palestine and the brutal Israeli policies towards the Palestinian Arabs didn’t stop. The Israeli need for foreign economic, logistic and military support didn’t disappear either. The Israelis still need the support of powerful nations for the defense of their tiny country against the billion hostile Arabs all around. I fail to see where there is a dead horse in this matter, Tim.

Thanks for the link – who dares wings. I’m reading the transcript now, and noted Vrba’s reply (under oath) to a question by the Crown Barrister, P. Griffiths, on p.1315 ;-
Q. Did you have an opportunity to look at the pits [in Birkenau] that you saw?
A. Yes. The pits were close to the barrack. It was December 1942, and the heat came out from the pits. The pits were not used. There was nobody. When I looked into the pits I saw bones which were fragments only which were burned, but a lot of unburned or slightly burned children’s heads. At that time I didn’t know what it means, why children’s heads don’t burn, but now I know that they contain such an amount of water that to burn completely a child skull is much more difficult than a grown-up’s skull.
Wow! – If Mr Vrba’s testimony continues in this vein, then it will certainly be an enjoyable read.

A child’s skull doesn’t contain more water than a grown-up’s skull. But brain is a mass of fat, what of course makes a head quite combustible.

I completed reading the testimony of Rudolf Vrba, but it wasn’t just what he said that discredited him in the eyes of the court, but how he presented himself, as he took on a very combative style with the defence barrister – Doug Christie. In fact, the holocaust establishment must have been very dismayed by Vrba’s performance – not just by what he said, but the very pugnacious and belligerent manner in which he said it.
We must remember, that back in the 1980’s, most people in the world believed in the holocaust lock-stock-and-barrel. I’m quite certain that the Judge, the Jury, the court officials, onlookers and reporters would have regarded Auschwitz as almost a sacred place, where unimaginable horror and human depravity had manifested itself. Therefore, in their eyes, any survivor would be full of anguish, introspection – even reluctance – as he or she attempted to bring their terrible experiences before the court. But what they got instead with Mr Vrba, was someone who fully intended to come out fighting in a 15-round bout inside the boxing ring!
But, alas for the holocaust establishment, they hadn’t reckoned on this scenario unfolding in court. To them, Rudolf Vrba, was very much the “poster boy” of the holocaust. He had been the first one to bring the world’s attention to what was alleged to have been going on inside Auschwitz, and they had rested on their laurels over the years, allowing Mr Vrba to strut around in public, proclaiming the legend to one and all. They hadn’t realised that Vrba had become so “cocky” and full of himself over this period, that when he finally arrived in a court of law to give evidence under oath, then he would become an absolute disaster for their cause.

According to the account of the last Jewish Starosta of Slovakia they presented the two men escaped from Auschwitz to the Papal Nutius at Brtatiskava. By the way Mons. Giovanni Burzio after war had been sent first to San Domingo and the at Rome he had only a meaningless ritual office until his passing away, At any rate, some months later the Nuntius at Budapest obtained the Admiral Horthy ordered the stop of the deportations just when the majority of Hungarian Jews had been already exterminated.

The article itself again brings up the question of bombing Auschwitz-Birkenau.
It brings up several reasons why such a mission or missions would have been difficult.
I’m glad to see such an article, it is irritating when criticism arises on why the allies did not, usually from some grumpy rabbi with an axe to grind. I guess now that all of the old random guards and radio operators are dying off there is a search for someone new to blame. This is ridiculous, the blame rests with the Nazi government, not with the allies.

THE BOMBING DEBATE
At the beginning of 1944, the War Refugee Board asked Jewish organisations and other groups helping refugees for suggestions on what it should do. Not one suggested bombing extermination camps or rail lines leading to them. There is no evidence that anybody came up with the idea before May 1944. Apparently the first such proposal was made by a Slovak rabbi, Michael Dov Ber Weissmandel, to the Jewish Agency on May 16. At about the same time, two officials of the Jewish Agency in Palestine separately made similar suggestions. Yitzhak Gruenbaum made his to the U.S. Consul-General in Jerusalem, Lowell C. Pinkerton, and Moshe Shertok made his to George Hall, the British under secretary of state for foreign affairs. However, the idea was promptly squashed by the Executive Board of the Jewish Agency. On June 11, 1944, the Executive, with David Ben-Gurion in the chair, overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to ask the Allies to bomb the railroad lines and the death camps, with Ben-Gurion summing up:
“The view of the board is that we should not ask the Allies to bomb places where there are Jews.”

Here’s the “numbers” again. They f–k with my head,because nobody can make up their mind. These two jokers had damning evidence,that would sink the nazis. Did the prosecution use this at Nuremberg ? According to this write up,it reached America and the Brits in plenty of time. I have a hard time accepting the numbers of dead Jews. The reason for that is because I’m trying to figure out how they got access to nazi records . Then again I was told ,”the krauts didn’t keep records”. I will say one thing about their numbers,their not halves or wholes (you know 1.5,4,4.5 or 6mill). 1.765 mill. I’ve never seen the numbers in quarters . I’m wanting to know how they kept track of the prisoners that were gassed . 1.75 mill. How the hell is someone gonna keep track of that many prisoners ? They’re gonna have to be Johnny on the spot each time they run a batch through. Just cause they don’t see them again,it don’t mean they ran them into the gas house. He said he tried to remember the details of the prison. He’s having a hard time that ,but he can recall the number of the Jews that were put dow

In this interesting article, I missed an opening paragraph about The Morgenthau Plan even though I assume the writer is a son of the writer of the Plan.
Numbers: In this story it is easy: these two guys were on the platform where they saw the Jews arrive so they counted them. Of course. They knew this was an important fact that would come in handy later. Counting is very easy which you can see in an airplane. However there it seems the purser still needs some help. But in a plane, there may be 60 or 70 passengers. Wow. It gets a lot easier if there are over a thousand. No – it is just a guess, that’s what it is.
You can not believe they counted and subtracted and so on to get at their figure.
The silly thing is that learned jurists want you to believe this.

How old was Vbra when he started counting arriving Jews while on the platform. Why would he do this?
He only learned about this later as in his testimony:
“A. We would be woken up at three o’clock in the morning and marched up to a train which was in front of the gate of Auschwitz I. We would be counted when we came out from the barrack, then we would be counted when we came out from the gate, and then we would be counted again when we entered the barracks,”

The gate into the Auschwitz 1 camp was nowhere near any train tracks. He is obviously talking about the gate into the Auschwitz II camp. I have photos on my scrapbookpages.com website which show the gates into the two camps:

So out of the two different prison units,he can’t recall which one he was in,but he had all these other numbers burned into his memory. Im still trying to figure out how he knew what time they were woke up at. Yeah I know the trains kept a schedule,but with that many Jews being run in over the course of time,there’s gonna be a few of them that were late. Murphys Law. I figure that would be something that would stick out. I just want to see how their memory is now that I find out they can’t even keep the unit they were at straight in their head. You sure they weren’t coached by the prosecution .

I seriously doubt that the SS was giving updates to the people they were trying to kill.

This brings up the question: Why didn’t the Nazis keep records of the number of Jews who were gassed and the number of Jews who died of other causes? Would it have killed them to keep records for future generations?

Did it ever occur to you that the Nazis did not keep records, on the people who were gassed, because no one was gassed? They also did not keep records on the Jews who were transferred to another camp. The result is that we don’t know if a certain number of Jews were gasses or transferred.
What should the Nazis have done with the possessions of the Jews who died?

There has to be records because those that didn’t die had to be fed, clothed, and housed.

But the camp that received them kept records because they had to feed, clothe and house the incoming prisoners.
