Spider Burke and Don Faurot — both gone AND FORGOTTEN

Filed under: Uncategorized — furtherglory @ 10:48 am

Yesterday, I watched as my Alma mater, the University of Missouri, lost a football game, in the very last seconds of the game. It was heart-breaking.

There were a couple of young people watching the game with me. I mentioned Spider Burke, the University of Missouri cheerleader who was world famous in his day.

None of these young people had ever heard of Spider Burke. One of them tried to look him up on the internet, but couldn’t find anything about him.

Spider Burke’s real name was Harold J. Burke. He was born in 1917 and died on December 6, 2010.

Then my young friends tried to do a search for Don Faurot, the football coach at the University of Missouri from 1935 to 1956.  Siri couldn’t find him either.

You can read about Don Faurot at

His name is pronounced “fare row”.

  1. That was an excellent blog about Psych-ops! Thanks for sharing….The video 1/3 the Holocaust really gets into the CD Jackson case.
It’s amazing how one person continued in his life spreading false information.

  3. You put your eggs in the wrong basket. Crimson Tide ! Hey 16 championships. That settles that.

Don’t feel bad about them kids not knowing who those ball players were . Ask them if they have heard of,”Broadway” Joe Namith or the late,Ken “The Snake” Stabler. They’d probably say,”who”. Where I live here in Texas,it’s very conservative. University of Texas don’t fly here. It’s Texas A&M. Everytime U of A plays A&M,they kick their ass. I’m going around cheering for Crimson Tide. I’ve almost gotten in a couple fights over that. Hey. It’s not my fault A&M sucks.

I remember growing up. We’d visit relatives on my moms side in Bama. We’d go see Uncle Gant and Aunt Virginia. If you want proof how much of a God “Bear” Bryant is in Alabama,go to someone’s house there. Gant and Virginia had the ubiquitous picture of Chirst hanging over the mantle on the fire place. Right next to that picture, bigger than life, you’ll see Coach Paul Bryant’s picture. You think people turned out for FDRs funeral route? The state of Alabama shut down sections of the interstate for Bear Bryamts funeral. It was all their highway.

I don’t know if this is true or just legend, but I heard how Bear Bryant got his nickname. They said when he was in 8th grade,he wrestled a bear. Probably urban legend.

At any rate, all you need to remember is this. “GO BAMA,ROLL TIDE!” You’ll be doing just fine.

  4. I stayed up the other night researching C.D. Jackson’s ethnicity to confirm the information I ran across, quite by accident, in Stephen Birmingham’s book Life at the Dakota that C.D. Jackson was the Jewish son of NYC marble importer named Jacobson. What I learned is that he was the son of a successful marble company owner named C.D. Jackson, a well traveled WASP who sent him to school in Switzerland and then to The Hill School which was also attended by Trump’s two sons. Jackson took over his father’s failing business which ultimately went into bankruptcy. Jackson’s mother’s genealogy is more murky. I found her maiden name, but failed to write it down. I recall it’s a name that could be Jewish. In any event, Jackson always presented himself as a WASP and the paragraph in Birmingham’s book stating he’d changed his name to ingratiate himself with WASPY Yale Bonesman Henry Luce is apparently incorrect. If Jackson’s mother was Jewish this means he was a crypto-Jew, but I could find no conclusive evidence of this. Jackson’s biographer John Allen Stern, a professor of history at the John Jay College of Justice, does not respond to my email inquiries. BTW his very thin 92 page biography (probably a thesis written for Eleanore Roosevelt hagiographer Blanche Wiesen-Cook) does NOT cover Jackson’s Syke War work in WWII or his shenanigins in Rome in l965 at Vatican II when the onus of the diecide (crucifxion) was transferred from the Jews to the Romans. Go Tigers!
