Heilig Vaterland.

Special thanks to Herbert Stolpmann's comments which you can read here.

Ulfhethnar version

When I first saw this Youtube video, I wondered if the lyrics were the same as the lyrics in the original song, written by Rudolf Alexander Schröder, in 1914.  Turns out that the lyrics are a little different in the two different versions.  I looked up the original 1914 lyrics, which are at the end of this blog post.

But first, lets start with the new version, which I looked up on the Internet.  Differences between the new and old versions are indicated by showing the old version in brackets.  For example, zieh uns alle in Bann [Sieh uns all entbrannt], the words in brackets are from the original song.

I have copied the new lyrics, which you can read below, or you can read the new lyrics in the link below.

Heilig Vaterland, in Gefahren,
deine Söhne sich um dich scharen,
von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland,
alle steh’n wir Hand in Hand.

Von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland,
alle steh’n wir Hand in Hand.
Von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland,
alle steh’n wir Hand in Hand.

Bei den Sternen steht was wir schwören,
der die Sterne lenkt wird uns hören.
Jeder Fremde, dir deine Kronen raubt,
Deutschland, fallen wir Haupt bei Haupt.

Jeder Fremde, [Eh’ der Fremde] dir deine Kronen raubt,
Deutschland, fallen wir Haupt bei Haupt.
Von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland,
alle steh’n wir Hand in Hand.

Heilig Vaterland, heb zur Stunde,
kühl [Kühn] dein Angesicht in die Runde,
zieh uns alle in Bann [Sieh uns all entbrannt] Sohn bei Söhnen steh’n,
du sollst bleiben lang, wir vergeh’n.

Zieh’ uns alle in Bann Sohn bei Söhnen steh’n,
du sollst bleiben lang, wir vergeh’n.
Jeder Fremde, [Eh’ der Fremde] dir deine Kronen raubt,
Deutschland, fallen wir Haupt bei Haupt.

Von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland,
alle steh’n wir Hand in Hand.
Von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland,
alle steh’n wir Hand in Hand.

English translation of new lyrics according to google.

Holy Fatherland, in dangers,
Thy sons are gathered round thee,
Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland,
We all stand hand in hand.

Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland,
We all stand hand in hand.
Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland,
We all stand hand in hand.

With the stars is what we swear,
Who steers the stars will hear us.
Every stranger, [Eh ‘stranger], robbing you of your crowns,
Germany, we fall head at head.

Every stranger, [Eh ‘stranger] robbed you of your crowns,
Germany, we fall head at head.
Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland,
We all stand hand in hand.

Holy Fatherland, lifted the hour,
Cool [bake] your face in the round,
Draw us all together [See us all burnt] Son with sons,
You shall remain long, we shall pass away.

Let us all be a son of a son with sons,
You shall remain long, we shall pass away.
Every stranger, [Eh ‘stranger] robbed you of your crowns,
Germany, we fall head at head.

Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland,
We all stand hand in hand.
Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland,
We all stand hand in hand.

End of English translation of new lyrics.

You can follow the link below to the original 1914 lyrics, and hear a piano play the melody on an mp3.  I have also provided an English translation using google translate.

Nach Rudolf Alexander Schröder, 1914

Heilig Vaterland! In Gefahren
Deine Söhne sich um dich scharen.
|: Von Gefahren umringt, heilig Vaterland!
Alle stehen wir Hand in Hand! 😐

2 Bei den Sternen steht, was wir schwören.
Der die Sterne lenkt, wird uns hören.
|: Eh’ der Fremde dir deine Kronen raubt,
Deutschland, fallen wir Haupt bei Haupt! 😐

3. Heilig Vaterland, heb zur Stunde
Kühn dein Angesicht in die Runde!
|: Sieh uns all entbrannt, Sohn bei Söhnen stehn.
Du sollst bleiben, Land, wir vergehn! 😐

End of old lyrics

English Translation:

According to Rudolf Alexander Schröder, 1914

Holy Fatherland! In dangers
Your sons are gathering around you.
|: Surrounded by dangers, holy Fatherland!
We all stand hand in hand! : |

2 The stars are what we swear.
He who directs the stars will hear us.
|: If the stranger robbed thee of your crowns,
Germany, we fall head at home! : |

3. Holy Fatherland, lift to the hour
Bake your face in the round!
|: See us all burned, son with sons.
Thou shalt stay, land, we shall perish! : |

End of translation

Much if not all of this footage, I believe was lifted from the films Triumph of the Will, and Victory of Faith.  I think I like the original sound track of this footage by Leni Riefenstahlt better.
