Typesetter’s cabinet on the TV show “The Big Bang Theory”

Update:

I just saw a Big Bang Theory episode where it was mentioned that the cabinet that is shown on the show is a library card cabinet. When I was a student at the University of Missouri, the college library had a cabinet that is just like the one on The Big Bang Theory. So it turns out that this is a library cabinet where cards about the books in the library were stored.

Continue reading my original post:

A few days ago, I watched a rerun of the very first episode of the TV show named “The Big Bang Theory”. The show takes place in an apartment that was first occupied by Sheldon Cooper.  Then Leonard Hoffstetter becomes Sheldon’s room mate after passing a test, where he answers Sheldon’s  science questions correctly.

In the very first episode, the furniture in Sheldon’s apartment consisted of two folding lawn chairs and a coffee table made from something which I am not able to identify. In the background, there is a chest of drawers, which I believe is a typesetter’s chest.

There are tiny drawers in the chest, that used to be filled with type, which was formerly used to set type for a newspaper. I know this because I used to live in a small town that had a newspaper that was actually set in type by hand, one letter at a time.

My next door neighbor was the editor of the newspaper. When I was 12 years old, she took me to visit the newspaper office where she used to set the type for the town newspaper. In her newspaper office was a chest of drawers like the one that is shown on The Big Bang TV show. This was my introduction to the newspaper business and I decided, then and there, that I wanted to be a newspaper editor some day.

Fortunately, I lived only 45 miles from the University of Missouri which had the only university in the world, at that time, which had a School of Journalism. As the saying goes, the rest is history. I actually took a class in typesetting by hand, at the University of Missouri.

But to get back to The Big Bang TV show, the typesetter’s drawers are never mentioned on the show. I would like to know the story behind the drawers, and why they are never mentioned on the show.

World leaders are attending a conference in Munich

You can read a news article about the on-going conference in Munich here: http://time.com/4674331/munich-conference-nato-europe-us-foreign-policy/

The following quote is from the last line in the article:

Begin quote

U.S. Sen. John McCain, an outspoken critic of Trump’s Russia policies, is among more than a dozen American representatives expected to attend as part of a U.S. congressional delegation.

End quote

When I attended Journalism school at the University of Missouri, back in the Dark Ages, we were taught that the most important part of the story should be mentioned in the headline. In this case, the headline should have said something about Donald Trump screwing up as usual.  Instead, the news article begins with this quote:

BERLIN (AP) — Top world leaders, diplomats and defense officials are getting their first opportunity to meet with members of the Trump administration amid concerns over the new president’s commitment to NATO and posture toward Russia.

Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly are leading the U.S. delegation to the Munich Security Conference opening Friday. The annual weekend gathering is known for providing an open and informal platform for allies — and adversaries — to meet in close quarters.
