How would you define the term “Polish death camp”?

Filed under: Auschwitz, Germany, Holocaust, Uncategorized — Tags: , — furtherglory @ 3:22 pm

Is this a photo of a Polish death camp? Or a photo of a  death camp in Poland?

What is a “Polish death camp”?  Is it a death camp located in Poland, or is it a death camp run by Polish people?

This news story is concerned with this problem:

http://www.thenews.pl/1/2/Artykul/317828,German-broadcaster-refuses-to-apologise-for-%E2%80%98Polish-death-camp%E2%80%99-reference-report

The following quote is from the news report:

Begin quote

Auschwitz survivor Karol Tendera launched legal action over the promotion of a ZDF documentary about the liberation of Majdanek and Auschwitz, WWII German Nazi death camps located in occupied Poland.

In the promotional material on the zdf.de website, the expression “Polish death camps” was used. The description was changed after Polish authorities protested.

In April 2016, a Kraków district court found that ZDF had damaged Tendera’s dignity and national identity by referring to WWII German Nazi concentration camps Majdanek and Auschwitz as “Polish death camps”.

The use of the term “Polish concentration camp” by international media outlets has sparked numerous complaints from Poland in recent years, prompting some news agencies to change their style guidelines.

In 2007, following a Polish request, the World Heritage Committee attempted to clarify the matter by listing the Auschwitz camp as a “German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp”. (pk)

End quote

As a person who has a degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri, I think that the proper term would be “a death camp in Poland” not “a Polish death camp.”

The term “Polish death camp” implies that the death camp was run by Polish people. The term “a death camp in Poland” does not imply that the death camp was run by Polish people, although it was located in the country of Poland.

  1. Death camp in Poland is also incorrect as it improperly suggests Poland was a sovereign country and hosted the camps. The proper reference would be German death camp in occupied Poland or death camp in German occupied Poland. There is a huge difference between the geopolitical terms Poland and German occupied Poland. They are not interchangeable terms. The word German is also essential as the idea and execution of the idea was German and the idea was ethnically driven, with Germans considered superior, and Poles, Slavs and Jews considered subhuman with the annihilation of the latter planned for the benefit of the Germans. Deviation from the above is disrespectful to the memory of those imprisoned and killed purely because of their ethnicity.

  4. Doesn’t Holo-tourism make enough money flow to Poland for the Poles to be able to cope with the term “Polish death camp” ?

ZDF is a German TV channel. No surprise the Germans call Auschwitz and Majdanek “Polish death camps.” Any German who hears the term “Polish death camps” of course understands “Nazi death camps in Poland.” This oversensitive empty controversy is Polish chauvinist quibbling. If we go there, the term “eastern front” should also be dropped because the Soviets fought the war on the “eastern front” in the western part of their country and in the countries bordering it.

Historically, calling Auschwitz “a death camp in Poland” is erroneous anyway because Auschwitz was located in a German territory during the war. Upper Silesia was part of the Großgermanisches Reich at that time.

I have explained this on my scrapbookpages.com website and on my blog. German people are very precise in explaining the Holocaust. They will quickly correct you if you make a mistake.

    • ZDF is a German TV channel.

Yes it is — more to the point for those who don’t know: ZDF = Zweite Deutsche Fernsehen is one of the publicly financed TV channels in Germany (every Privathaushalt must pay 17.50€ per month) — since the government must pass and enforce laws to finance operations like ZDF, naturally it functions as a propaganda arm of the government — one might ask: why is ZDF producing such a program? — I covered this before: it is done by the German elite to prove their moral fitness to rule — here they are explicitly making German taxpayers pay for it — there is very little popular interest in this subject in Germany.

Polish public broadcaster TVP Info reported on its website that ZDF is arguing that courts in Poland are not independent.

Above is one of the first sentences at the link — it’s pretty funny, or pretty sick, depending on how you want to see it, considering all these ‘accessory to murder’ show trials of aged KZ employees the German establishment puts on.

    • There are still people who value respect for victims over money. Over sensitive? Perhaps you lack empathy. 6 million out of a population of 36 million were killed by the Germans. No, you do lack empathy, and simple sensitivity.

      • There is no proof 6 million Jews died during that time. Probably at the most 500000 people died in the camps half of them might have been Jews and that’s being generous. So what are you more concerned about sensitivity or the truth the truth is no six million Jews died.
Obviously you’re not too sensitive to the truth.

What we should be concerned about is the fact that so many Jews LIVED at that time. We should be concerned about what caused them to Live. I think that so many Jews survived because they had a meager vegetarian diet. That’s why I eat a meager vegetarian diet with no red meat, and I am still hale and hearty at 84.

In what country or countries were the 36 million victims located? Were the 36 million victims all Jewish, or were they people of all religions?

Not 36 victims, 36 million Poles, FG. The Communist propaganda about WW2 used to claimed that 6 million – 3 million Christians and 3 million Jews – out of the 36 million citizens of Poland had perished under German occupation. I thought that the lie had fallen with the removal of the 4M plaque at Auschwitz, but I was seemingly wrong and the figure is used in today’s Poland. 😮

Apparently the Jews aren’t among them because they keep asking for money.

I was talking about the Polish oversensitivity to the use of the term “Polish death camps,” i.e. about Polish chauvinistic ultra-nationalism and overreaction to what the Polish chauvinists feel as an intolerable affront to the honor of Holy Poland and which is in fact only a minor lexical quibbling. Chauvinistic extreme susceptibility is always such a hilarious sight. 😉

More brain and less heart, Stef. At least if you plan to look like something other than a ludicrous moron unable to grasp simple stuff such as the content of my previous comment in the future…

And for info, 3 million Polish Catholics and 3 million Polish Jews didn’t die during WW2. Just another Communist lie…

        • The Polish non Communist underground tracked and documented the transports and based on the estimated number of persons inside the trains and the number of trains going to the camps, in addition to members of the underground inside Auschwitz such as Witold Pilecki transmitting messages outside, the number 1 million killed by the Germans in the camps was reached a few years before the end of the war. The Polish government in exile warned the free world of what was happening, and their findings. 3 million Slavic Poles and 3 million Polish Jews killed by the Germans is supported also by German record keeping.

          • Nice try Stefan now you can explain to us how they did it. Oh ya, 1 million Jews killed with bug spray.

          • The German records showed how many people were transported. The death of these deported people is nothing but politically-motivated, biased & groundless extrapolation, and you know it, Stefan. So true that the official death toll for Auschwitz-Birkenau dropped from 4 million to 1.5 million (and now even 1.1 million) when the political interests involved in this matter changed.

In 1955, another neutral Swiss source, Die Tat of Zurich (January 19th, 1955), in a survey of all Second World War casualties based on figures of the International Red Cross, put the “Loss of victims of persecution because of politics, race or religion who died in prisons and concentration camps between 1939 and 1945” at 300,000, not all of whom were Jews, and this figure seems the most accurate assessment.
