It’s is short for it is or it has

Filed under: Language — furtherglory @ 12:10 pm

There has been a discussion recently on my blog about the use of the word it’s. One of my blog readers wrote: “Next “hateful” comment: an ambulance would be on it’s way — its, not it’s.”

I looked it up and found this website which explains the difference between the use of these two words:

The following was copied from the website above:

It’s and Its

There is often confusion between its and it’s. If you delve deeper into this issue, you will see that there is good reason for the confusion. However, if you just want to know what is right, the matter is very simple.

It’s

It’s is short for it is or it has. This is a 100% rule. It cannot be used for anything else.

  1. “it’s mine” = it is mine.

“it’s been a long time” = it has been a long time.

That car has a dent in its right rear fender.

    • “It’s rump”. Apostrophe should be there showing ownership.

      • Wrong.

        This is a real no-brainer.

        This is fifth-grade grammar.

        Merriam-Webster:

        Definition of its

:of or relating to it or itself especially as possessor, agent, or object of an action
        ·going to its kennel
·a child proud of its first drawings
        ·its final enactment into law

I think that it would be correct to say “it’s kennel” This is the possessive form meaning that the kennel belongs to the person who is going to it.

The child would be proud of it’s first drawings.

“it’s final enactment into law” is correct.

When I was a child, I had to learn to speak English. My family spoke hillbilly English which was a different language.

          • Do they consider “y’all” to be inbred language ? We own that one in the south.

No, it is not; it is incorrect.

Before we go any further, there is a rule that applies 100% of the time; there are no exceptions.
            That rule goes as follows:

“It’s” is a contraction of “it is” or “it has”; there are no exceptions.

If your usage of “it’s” cannot be expanded to “it is” or “it has”, then IT’S WRONG!

A dog is not a person.

“it” is not a person; “it” is a thing.

His, hers and its ….. not, His her’s and it’s.

“The child would be proud of it’s first drawings”

            Incorrect

“it’s final enactment into law” is correct.

            No, it isn’t.

Same here ….. both of my parents were from the Ozark Mountains.

Here is another dictionary that agrees with Webster’s:

Here is a short video that explains it:

            • Okay. What about,”I,you,he,she,it,we,they”? Subject pronouns. Used with verbs. Nouns being changed to subject pronouns. Man = he. Dog = it. Girls = they. I had a hard time with this shit first time around. So doesn’t that shit apply here,or have I gone in an irrelevant direction. You mentioned ,”it” so that’s why I bought this up.

              Comment by Tim — October 9, 2017 @ 7:23 pm

              • Yeah, I think it’s probably an irrelevant direction.
All that really matters in this discussion is “it’s” and “its”.

                • How did this even start? Let’s go back to something we can all agree on . Holohoax. Like I said,”I had a hard enough time with this, first go round, back in school”.

                  Comment by Tim — October 10, 2017 @ 12:02 am

        • No it isn’t . It’s used to show possession of a “singular noun”. Look that up. It’s never used for “plural nouns”. As was the case with the cows ass. It wasn’t multiple.

                • Well they seem to enjoy locking up people that use one of the gifts God gave every human. Freedom of Thought. It’s just like, how come the Hebs never dropped on Von Braun ? If the version of history they say is correct (hey. I said “if”),then he was using slave labor at his V2 plants. I know Kennedy was slobbering all over him,but if everything is correct,he should’ve pulled time. What about Schindler? Yeah I know,he saved a lot of Hebs, but was he paying them for their work? I ain’t never seen the movie. Don’t care to. I read where it said he was giving payola to Nazis,to keep from having his Jews sent to the prisons. Sooner or later, wouldn’t someone catch on to that? I mean history says they wanted,”all the Hebs” in the prisons. It’s kinda hard to accept any of this, when the Jew museum ( the one in DC),keeps changing the number of dead Jews,it’s not that many according to the Jew almanac. They gave figures for living Jews prior to WW2,vs. post WW2. The Jew museum says 6 mill, then 4 mill, the 850,000 dead Jews, courtesy of their holo. I’ve had people on here before (Jeff from Oklahoma) tell me to not get hung up on the numbers. How can I not get hung up on the numbers? Goes from 6 mill to 850,000. I thought Jews were such exp erts, with numbers. Then why can’t they get their shit in one sock on the numbers? She (FG) told me one time, the sacred 6 mill number will always remain,no mater how much they (the douchebag Jews ) change it. I’m still wanting to know ,how they can get an accurate count. Why is it an even “6 mill. Why not 6,000,005. Why not 6,000,100 ? Look at the deaths from WW1. It’s listed as 11 mill and change. Nam was 58,300 (giver or take). Point is,none of the numbers are even. Why is it the Hebs can come up with an even number like 6 mill?

  2. No way Jose. Thought the apostrophe shows ownership when it is used also. Such as “it’s his”
