My photo above shows the same kitchen building at the Auschwitz camp

My two photos above show the kitchen in the main Auschwitz camp. The kitchen is located on the right just after you enter the Arbeit Macht Frei gate.

The kitchen was painted white when the Auschwitz camp was in operation; since my visit to Auschwitz in 2005, it has been painted white again.

Karl Röder was forced by Nazi officials to forge the “Arbeit macht frei” slogan on the Dachau gate

The title of this blog post comes from a line in a news article, which you can read in full at http://www.dw.com/en/stolen-arbeit-macht-frei-gate-returned-to-holocaust-memorial-in-dachau/a-37665320

The following quote is from the news article:

Begin quote

The original wrought-iron gate carrying the infamous Nazi slogan “Arbeit macht frei” (“work sets you free”) was returned to Dachau from Norway on Wednesday.

It will be restored and publicly unveiled this April on the 72nd anniversary of the camp’s liberation. The gate will not be returned to its original location, but rather be displayed in the museum on the grounds of the former concentration camp near Munich in Bavaria that now serves as a memorial.

End quote

I have been to the former Dachau camp several times, beginning with my first visit in 1998.

The red brick road up to the Dachau gate

My photo of the red brick road up to the Dachau gatehouse

I have a section on my website about the Dachau gate: http://www.scrapbookpages.com/DachauScrapbook/KZDachau/Gatehouse.html

The iron gate at the entrance through the Dachau gatehouse into the prison compound is shown in my photo at the top of this page.

The sign which reads “Arbeit Macht Frei” was removed soon after the Dachau camp was liberated, but it was reconstructed in 1965 at the same time that two barrack buildings were reconstructed for visitors. One of the reconstructed barracks can be seen on the left side of my photo at the top of this page.

The slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei” was allegedly coined by Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels in an effort to convince the public that the Nazi concentration camps were merely work camps designed to politically rehabilitate Communists, Social Democrats and anarchists.

This slogan was first used over the gate of a “wild camp” in the city of Oranienburg which was set up in an abandoned brewery in March 1933 during the time that the first political prisoners were being held for an indefinite period without charges in a number of places in Germany.

In 1936, the Oranienburg camp was rebuilt as the Sachsenhausen camp. The Dachau camp was also rebuilt, starting in 1936. The gatehouse at Sachsenhausen also bears this inscription, but the third major German concentration camp, Buchenwald, has a sign on the gate that reads “Jedem das Seine,” which means To Each his Own.

Dachau and Sachsenhausen were both Class I camps for offenders, who were considered capable of being rehabilitated and who were eligible for possible release.

Rudolf Höss, who trained at Dachau and then served as an adjutant at Sachsenhausen before becoming the first Commandant at Auschwitz, used this motto over the gate into the main camp, Auschwitz I, which was classified as a Class I camp for political prisoners. Auschwitz II, also known as Birkenau, was not a Class I camp, so Birkenau did not have this slogan over the gatehouse.

Two other Nazi concentration camps which used the slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei” on their gate houses were Flossenbürg and Gross-Rosen. This slogan also appeared on a gate inside the Gestapo prison in the Small Fortress at Terezin, formerly known as Theresienstadt.

The following quote is from the news story, cited above:

Begin quote

An iron gate stolen from the Dachau concentration camp in Germany has been found … in western Norway.

The gate with the Nazi slogan “Arbeit macht frei” (“Work sets you free”) was stolen in November 2014. It was found [recently] in a parking lot in a town near Bergen, Norway’s second largest city.

However, police have no leads on who stole it, or why.

“Our forensic teams have found no useable evidence like DNA,” police spokeswoman Kari Bjoerkhaug Trones said.

More than 40,000 prisoners died at Dachau, near Munich, during the Second World War.

another trip hosted by the Holocaust Educational Trust [HET]

The photo, that is shown above, is at the top of a recent news article, which you can read in full at http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/sombre-auschwitz-visit-irvine-kilwinning-8990753

If you have extremely good eyesight, you might be able to see, in the photo above, the words “Arbeit macht Frei”  which are over the entrance into the main Auschwitz camp.

In English, “Arbeit macht Frei” is translated into “work will set you free”. This slogan has now been twisted into “Nazis killed Jews”. The original meaning was that work would set one free in the spiritual sense, not literally.

The following quote is from the news article:

Begin quote

The former Nazi concentration camp [Auschwitz-Birkenau], now an eerie expanse of ramshackle buildings, once housed 90,000 prisoners during World War II.

It is not known exactly how many people were murdered here in the years the camp was operational, from 1941 to 1945, but it is thought to be around 1.2million [including 1.1 million Jews].

Earlier in the day we [British students] began our trip with a brief visit to a Jewish cemetery in the small town of Oswiecim, better known by its [it’s] German name of Auschwitz.

In 1939, around 58 per cent of the town’s population were [was] Jewish, and before the war they led normal, peaceful lives and when they died they were buried with dignity. But during the war, the Nazis used the resting place [cemetery] as a toilet and knocked down all of the Jewish headstones, using them to form paths and roads in and around Auschwitz.

The photo above is a still shot from the movie “Shindler’s List” in which it was claimed that Jewish tombstones were dug up and used to pave the roads around Auschwitz. This is total fiction. The Germans were the best engineers in the world. Did they build the Autobahn out of Jewish tombstones?  Holocaust True Believers would have you believe that they did!

Germany will let a 92 year old Holocaust criminal slide

The photo below is at the top of a recent news story about a Holocaust criminal.

Arbeit macht Frei gate at Auschwitz main camp

The following quote is from a news story that you can read in full here: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/german-court-rules-92-year-old-auschwitz-radio-operator-unfit-fo/3115168.html

Begin quote

A German court has said it will shelve a case against a 92-year-old woman on accessory to murder charges. The woman, who served as radio operator at Auschwitz, would have been among the last to be tried for Nazi crimes.

End quote

Oh no! What is the world coming to? This woman is a danger to the over one million Jews who are back in Germany now.  She should be sentenced to at least 5 years in prison because she committed the crime of working as a radio operator during World War II. I am sure that she was warned that she was committing a crime, but she continued with her criminal behavior.

My photo of the gate into Auschwitz main camp

My 2005 photo of the Auschwitz main camp

It is hard to get a good photo of the Arbeit gate because there is a steady stream of tourists walking through this gate, from the moment that the memorial site opens. I got up at the crack of dawn and sneaked in. I got this photo before the other tourists arrived.

The news article continues with this quote:

Begin quote

The state court in the northern German city of Kiel said in a statement on Friday that Helma M. was almost fully blind and deaf and had also been weakened by a “severe internal illness” earlier this year, rendering her unfit to stand trial.

End quote

Just because this woman is blind and deaf and has been weakened by a severe illness does not excuse her from being put on trial.

REVENGE, REVENGE, REVENGE — that is the law of the Jews. She was a radio operator in a camp for Jews. That makes her a criminal.

The news article continues with this quote:

Begin quote

The 92-year-old’s last name was not released, in accordance with German privacy law.

Helma M. had been charged with 260,000 counts of accessory to murder associated with her activities as the radio operator of the commandant at the Auschwitz Nazi death camp.

Last Nazi trials

Germany is holding what are likely to be its last trials linked to Nazi-era crimes, with the alleged perpetrators now either deceased or extremely aged.  [link to another trial]

End quote

I think that the trials of the German people should continue even after they are dead. After all, this woman was a RADIO OPERATOR.  You can’t get any worse than that.

20 million people killed by the Nazis, according to the USHMM

A reader of my blog recently stated this in a comment:  “There were over 20 million people who were killed in total by Nazi atrocities from the 1930s until Germany’s surrender.  That does not  include casualties of the various allied and Soviet armies.”

This was news to me, but I wouldn’t put anything past those evil Nazis.

I was curious about where the figure of 20 million came from, so I did a google search and found this news article at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/germany/9906771/Nazis-may-have-killed-up-to-20m-claims-shocking-new-Holocaust-study.html

A photo of the Arbeit Macht Frei gate at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp was included in the article.  I have copied the photo, along with the caption, which you can see below.

Washington's Holocaust Memorial Museum found that Auschwitz and the Warsaw Ghetto were just part of a extensive network that imprisoned and obliterated millions of lives Photo: AP

Washington’s Holocaust Memorial Museum found that Auschwitz and the Warsaw Ghetto were just part of a extensive network that imprisoned and obliterated millions of lives Photo: AP

The official name of “Washington’s Holocaust Memorial Museum” is United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM).  I visited the USHMM several years ago, and wrote about it on my website at http://www.scrapbookpages.com/USHMM/

I do not consider the USHMM to be a reliable source of information, but that’s just me; others might have a different opinion.

I don’t think that a photo of the gate into the Sachsenhausen concentration camp is appropriate for an article about 20 million people being killed.  Sachsenhausen was a Class 1 camp for political prisoners, not a death camp.

You can read about the significance of the Arbeit Macht Frei gate on my website at http://www.scrapbookpages.com/Poland/Auschwitz/Auschwitz12.html

The Soviets, who liberated the Sachsenhausen camp, claimed that Sachsenhausen was a death camp and that 100,000 people had been killed there.  Now that figure has been officially reduced to 30,000 deaths.  Did the USHMM subtract those 70,000 deaths from the 20 million total?

I took the photo below, on  my visit to the Sachsenhausen camp.  It shows the gate into the camp.  That’s how I know that the photo, which was shown in the article, was taken at Sachsenhausen.  The Arbeit Macht Frei sign was only put on Class I camps, where prisoners had a good chance of being released.

This quote is from the article cited above:

The millions disappeared into a Nazi imprisonment and killing machine that covered a bloody swathe of Europe and appears to have been far more deadly than has been thought.

Up until now, the Holocaust is thought to have consumed between five and six million Jews, with an estimated further six million other people also murdered by the Nazi regime.

The new figures of 15 to 20 million, which have astonished some Holocaust historians, come after thirteen years of painstaking study at Washington’s Holocaust Memorial Museum. Historians at the museum brought together and studied the huge amount, and often disparate, files and research on the Holocaust.

The research covered some 42,400 camps and ghettos across Europe, and also included forced-labour camps and Nazi “care” centres where pregnant women were forced to have an abortion or had their child killed right after giving birth. It also drew in camps, prisons and killing grounds used by Nazi puppet regimes in countries such as France and Romania.

The number of locations is almost double previous estimates made by the same institution and, all told, they may have imprisoned and killed between 15 to 20 million people.

Note that the USHMM story is that pregnant women were forced to have an abortion or had their baby killed after giving birth.  I have blogged about babies being born in the Nazi camps several times: https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2012/08/26/pregnant-at-auschwitz-the-story-of-miriam-rosenthal/

https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/its-a-miracle-seven-babies-slipped-through-the-nazi-killing-machine-at-dachau/

https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/holocaust-survivor-who-was-born-in-auschwitz/

https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/holocaust-survivor-was-born-in-mauthausen-concentration-camp/

This serious mistake, by the USHMM, regarding the fate of pregnant women and babies, is enough for me to question the whole article.

The largest “death camps” in  the Holocaust were Auschwitz and Majdanek. The number of deaths at Auschwitz has been downgraded, from 4 million to 1.1 million, and  the number of deaths at Majdanek has been downgraded, from 1.5 million to 78,000.  Were these deaths subtracted from the 20 million total?

Sorry, but I don’t believe the new total of 20 million people killed by the Nazis.  False in one, false in all.  Next time, don’t tell us about mothers being forced to have an abortion in the “death camps.”
