“the evidence room” is back in the news about the Holocaust

My photo of the gas chamber at Auschsitz

I have visited the Auschwitz gas chamber several times. On my visits, I took photos of the reconstructed holes through which the Zyklon-B gas pellets were allegedly poured.

Now there is another book, The Evidence Room, written by Prof. van Pelt and three colleagues – Donald McKay, Anne Bordeleau and Sascha Hastings – to supplement the exhibition.

“It is difficult to imagine the details of a gas chamber, where humans were locked in to die,” says one Holocaust survivor, quoted in the new book.

Published by New Jewish Press, a Toronto firm, it will be available at select bookstores during the ROM run.

“One has to feel the double grates that protected the bucket filled with poison pellets from the desperate hands of the condemned, peer into the bucket, imagine the pellets melting away, the poison oozing out of them,” says the survivor. “Only then can real awareness arise in the soul and place the viewer inside the gas chamber.”

Most people are aware of the Holocaust, but to be taken inside the obscene killing machine is by all accounts an overwhelming and unforgettable experience. The Nazis killed about six million Jews, including three million in gas chambers (one million in Auschwitz and two million elsewhere).

“I touched the gas column – a reproduction of the device that inserted Zyklon B into the gas chambers at Auschwitz,” says the same witness to the 20th century’s worst nightmare. “As a Holocaust survivor, I felt the cold hand of history on my spine. I knew a good deal about the Auschwitz-Birkenau murder factory, but the gas column really shocked me. Because of what I had read about people thinking they were going into a shower room, I had always imagined the gas being dispersed by sprinklers.

Touching that construction had a profound effect on me – a new visceral recognition all these years later.”

The plans behind the killing machine are at once simple and obscene. The designers, engineers and architects who created it came up with a cheap and shocking solution.

The exhibit provides a reconstruction of the steel mesh gas column through which the Zyklon B pellets were lowered into the chamber. Viewers also examine a reproduction of original architectural drawings. Among the details: the door of the gas chamber with a tight seal around the edge.

Have you ever seen a gas chamber?

I’m not talking about the gas chamber in Jefferson City, MO which is a two-seater, in which two people can be gassed at one time.  No, I’m talking about the famous gas chambers in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, where a large room full of Jews were gassed at one time with Zyklon-B gas, the same gas that was used to kill lice in the clothing of the prisoners. [God forbid the Jews should die of typhus which is spread by lice.]

ROM to reveal architecture of the Holocaust with exhibit created at University of Waterloo
In 2000, Prof. van Pelt’s testimony was a key factor in a libel suit in which the false assertion that Auschwitz had no gas chambers and the Holocaust had never happened played a central role. The book based on his testimony was published in 2002.

The entire exhibit is in white, the colour of innocence, which contrasts with the blackness of the evil subject matter.

The most compelling feature of the exhibition is its tactile character, says a survivor of the death camp at Dachau.

“By removing colour, sound and interpretation from The Evidence Room, we are forced to rely on touch to elicit its meaning.”

students and professors create a replica of an Auschwitz gas chamber

The title of my blog post today comes from a news article, which you can read in full at http://www.therecord.com/news-story/6694371-touching-the-horrors-of-auschwitz/

The following quote is from the news article, cited above:

The [Auschwitz-Birkenau] gas chambers’ heavy, airtight doors were completely destroyed at the war’s end, as were the columns used to release hydrogen cyanide inside, killing millions in concentration camps. [which camps other than Auschwitz-Birkenau?]

[…]

Proving the Holocaust happened became crucial to the [court] case [against David Irving] and Van Pelt used his expertise as an architectural historian to navigate through the proof: blueprints, letters written by Nazi architects and engineers, photos and contractors’ bills.

He [Van Pelt] wrote a book about it afterwards called “The Case for Auschwitz: Evidence from the [David] Irving Trial.”

“We knew this was something that needed to be done,” said Michael Nugent, an architecture student who was responsible for building the gas column replicas.

“It’s an important part of history that needed to be remembered.”

[…]

Based on blueprints, construction documents, architects’ letters and photographs, The Evidence Room brings forensic evidence of the Holocaust to life in the form of harrowing white plaster casts and monuments in a pure white room.

“What we wanted to do was [to] create a room people can touch. … We want people to touch everything,” said Robert Jan van Pelt, a UW architecture professor who worked on the exhibit.

He said the tangible nature of the exhibit makes it difficult to ignore.

“There will be no explanation of these things,” van Pelt said. “Really the idea is that we in some way relate with this, or the visitor relates to it through the gut.”

The architectural exhibit opens at La Biennale, an international architectural exhibition in Venice on Saturday.

Two constructed gas columns, an airtight hatch with a ladder and a heavy, gasproof door sit in the centre of the eerily white makeshift room.

The physical pieces of evidence cast in plaster by van Pelt and his team tell the story of what millions of people saw before they were killed.

Excuse me! Something is missing in this story!

Auschwitz-Birkenau was a huge place; it was 425 acres in size! The map below shows the location of the alleged homicidal gas chambers. Why have such a huge camp for the purpose of gassing people? And why weren’t the gas chambers hidden from view by people walking through the camp?

Map of the Auschwitz- Birkenau

Map of the Auschwitz-Birkenau shows gas chamber buildings in red and disinfection chambers in orange

At the bottom of the map shown above, the train tracks can be seen going through an opening in the gate house on the left side of the drawing. Parallel to the tracks is the Hauptstrasse, or the main street of the camp. On the left side of the main street are the women’s barracks with two disinfection chambers shown in orange in between the two sections of women’s barracks.

Are you begining to see something wrong here? Why have such a huge camp, just to kill people, and then have disinfection chambers to kill the lice in the clothing of the prisoners who were waiting to be killed?

All of the gas chambers should have been used to kill the Jews; this would have eliminated the waiting of the Jews to die, as shown in the photo below.

The women and children in the photo above are looking across the road toward the place where the Sauna building is located. The Sauna building had a shower room for incoming prisoners, and huge ovens where the clothing of the prisoners was disinfected with hot steam.

Robert Jan van Pelt proves the use of gas chambers in the Holocaust — again!

Robert Jan van Pelt is back in the news. You can read the news about him here: http://www.cbc.ca/radio/q/schedule-for-wednesday-march-2-2015-1.3472195/chilling-exhibit-the-evidence-room-recreates-a-nazi-gas-chamber-1.3472244

Robert Jan Van Pelt claims this is a photo of a peephole in the door of a homicidal gas chamber at Auschwitz

The quote is from the news article:

Professor and Holocaust expert Robert Jan van Pelt was one of her [Deborah Lipstadt’s] key witnesses [in David Irving’s lawsuit against Lipstadt for libel.]

He’s [Robert Jan van Pelt] now heading one of Canada’s contributions to the upcoming Venice Architecture Biennale, and it emerges directly from the Irving case.

[…]

The Evidence Room was the combined effort of a team of students and faculty of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture headed by Anne Bordeleau, Sascha Hastings, Donald McKay, and [Robert Jan] van Pelt.

It features life-sized replicas and casts of key pieces described in his [Robert Jan van Pelt’s] testimony about Auschwitz, including a gas column, gas door, a section of wall with a gas-tight hatch and other items that definitively proved the site was a factory of death.

I have never seen this alleged photograph of a gas chamber peephole before, even though I have studied the Holocaust extensively.

Peephole in Dachau gas chamber

My photo of the alleged peephole in the Dachau gas chamber

The alleged gas chamber in the Auschwitz main camp had a peephole, which was installed in the outside door into the room when it was turned into a bomb shelter for the SS men. I believe that the so-called gas chamber in the Auschwitz main camp was actually a morgue where bodies were stored before they were burned in the ovens in the room next door.

The peep hole, shown in the photo above, was for the German SS men to look out, after a bombing raid, to see if it was safe to come out of the Auschwitz “gas chamber” after a bombing raid.

My 1998 photo, shown above, illustrates that the alleged gas chamber in the Auschwitz main camp was right next to the cremation ovens, which would have caused an explosion if this was actually a gas chamber.
