Another “Holocaust survivor” exposed as a fraud

In the recent news on the Internet, there are a lot of articles about Rosemarie Pence, who allegedly survived the Dachau concentration camp and went on to become an Olympic athlete.  It has now been revealed that Rosemarie’s story is total fiction, but for years, people believed her and she earned fees for speaking to students in American schools. A book about her, entitled From Dachau to the Olympics and Beyond was written by Jean Goodwin Messinger and published in 2005.

Book about Rosemarie Pence, alias “Hannah”

Rosemarie claims that her birth name was Hannah and that she is Jewish; she told the author of the book that she was sent to Dachau when she was three years old.  Rosemarie is now 72 years old, so she was born in 1938 and she was allegedly sent to Dachau in 1941 at the age of three.

Here is a tip for future authors of Holocaust survivor stories:  If a female Holocaust survivor claims that she was sent to Dachau in 1941 at the age of three, don’t believe it.  Dachau was mainly a camp for men; there were very few children there until the very last days before the camp was liberated when children from other camps were brought to Dachau.

The Nazis did not begin rounding up all  the Jews to send them to camps until February 1942, after the Wannsee Conference which took place on January 20, 1942.  The Jews were sent to camps in the East in 1942, not to Dachau, which was a camp mainly for political prisoners.  It turns out that Rosemarie Pence is not even Jewish.

Rosemarie has a scar on her arm which she claims is from the removal of her tattoo.  Only prisoners at Auschwitz were tattooed with a number. The old black and white photo on the cover of Messinger’s book shows child survivors of Auschwitz, but  I’m not sure if Rosemarie claimed to have been in Auschwitz.  (I haven’t read the book.)

Even though it was obvious to anyone who knows anything about the Holocaust that Rosemarie’s story was fiction, it took five years or more before she was exposed as a fraud.

The moral of this story is:  Use your heads, people!  If a story sounds unbelievable, it is most likely false.  Don’t fall for every Holocaust survivor story that you hear.

  1. Peter Loth is a fraud. He was not born in the concentration camp. Do the research! His mother was in the Stutthof Camp for only three months. She was pregnant when she was released. She was sent there as punishment by her Nazi Father. Peters father and grand father were we’re both Nazi’s. Some people fabricat lies for the money.

    • You are commenting on a blog post, which I wrote over 5 years ago. I did not mention Peter Loth in that blog post.

  2. It is easy for someone to make a comment, it’s quite another to research history and find out just how many catholics, non-jews and jews alike were inhumanly treated. Please love your neighbor, and stop hating, we are all human beings. My aim is to be a good human being, if you are unsure of the truth, please pass along something said in love.

  4. Peter Loth visited our church a lot of times. What this man tells is the truth.
If you tell,he takes advantage of his story you don´t know him or

    • Did your grandfather mention that Dr. Josef Mengele came to the Stutthof camp to do experiments on baby Peter, who wasn’t a twin? Peter Loth tells that Dr. Mengele came to Stutthof to do experiments. Does he provide any evidence or proof of this story? Does Peter Loth speak at churches without asking for a fee?

    • You can’t know anything for sure. You just have to accept some things on faith.

    • Peter Loth found out from the Red Cross International Tracing Service in Arolsen, Germany that he was born in the Stutthof camp near the city formerly known as Danzig. After the war, he was an orphan, but was taken in by a foster mother. When he found out about his birth, he wrote a book entitled “Peace by Piece” with the help of a professional writer.

Peter Loth has taken advantage of his birth in a concentration camp to make money off a book and to speak to schools and churches for a fee. His story of being born in a camp is true, but not his claim that Dr. Josef Mengele came to Stutthof and performed medical experiments on him when he was a baby. The fact that he was born in a camp and survived might cause some people to doubt the Holocaust; his story certainly does nothing to prove the Holocaust.

      • this is interesting, some family members of mine just went to see him speak at their church…I immediately had my suspicions about the details of his story…Are you able to provide links to any articles or websites that provide background information that supports your own claim?

        • Dr. Josef Mengele worked only at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He did not go to Stutthof to do medical experiments. Dr. Mengele was doing research on twins and on people with congenital defects. Peter Loth was not a twin and had no congenital defect. If he was of such interest that Dr. Mengele would have wanted to study him, Loth would have been sent to Auschwitz. You can read about Dr. Mengele at
