Amon Goeth had two different maids named Helen and lived in three different houses at the Plaszow concentration camp

I have been blogging almost daily for two and a half years and have written around 800 blog posts.  The two subjects that have generated the most interest, among my readers, are Dr. Josef Mengele who selected prisoners for the gas chamber at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Amon Goeth, the Commandant of the Plazow concentration camp, who shot prisoners at random from the balcony of the house where he lived, according to the movie Schindler’s List, which is based on a NOVEL entitled Schindler’s Ark written by Thomas Keneally.

During his time as the Commandant at Plaszow, Goeth lived in THREE DIFFERENT HOUSES.  The RED House was the first house where Amon Goeth lived when he was the Commandant, and the WHITE HOUSE which is shown in a documentary entitled Inheritance, was the last house where he lived.

In his NOVEL, Thomas Keneally explained that Amon Goeth was not arrested for shooting prisoners at random from his balcony because Plaszow was a LABOR CAMP at that time. The Plaszow camp was not yet under the jurisdiction of the SS Economic Administrative Main Office, which controlled the concentration camps, but not the labor camps.  The Commandant of a concentration camp did not have the authority to shoot prisoners without permission from the SS Economic Administrative Main Office.  By the time that Goeth was living in the WHITE house, shown in the documentary, Plaszow was a concentration camp and he would have been arrested if he had shot prisoners from his balcony.

In real life, Amon Goeth had two maids, both named Helen, while he was the Commandant at Plaszow. In the movie Schindler’s List, the two maids are combined into one person named Helen.

The two maids, who worked in Goeth’s house at the same time, were named Helen Hirsch and Helen Sternlicht.  Helen Hirsch is now Helen Horowitz; she was one of the “Schindler Jews” who provided information to Keneally for his novel.  Helen Sternlicht is now Helen Jonas.  She is the Helen who is shown in the James Moll documentary Inheritance, as she confronts Monika Goeth in a very belligerent way, making poor Monika feel guilty about the alleged crimes of her father.

Helen Hirsch was a witness at the post-war trial of Amon Goeth in Poland. As far as I know, she was the only one of the two maids named Helen, who testified at the trial. Helen Hirsch testified under oath that Amon Goeth had shot prisoners from THE WINDOW of his RED HOUSE during the time that Plaszow was a LABOR CAMP.

The house shown in the documentary Inheritance is the THIRD house in which Goeth lived during the time that he was the Commandant of Plaszow CONCENTRATION CAMP.  This is NOT the house that was mentioned in the testimony of Helen Hirsch at the trial of Amon Geoth.

Third house where Amon Goeth lived is shown in the documentary Inheritance

In the photo above, notice that there is a balcony on the second floor, which would be called the first floor in European terms. On the ground floor, there is a wide door that opens in the middle, and two casement windows that open outward.  The tiled area outside the doors would be called a patio by most people, not a balcony.

The photo below shows Amon Goeth, holding a rifle, as he stands outside the house.  The doors and windows identify the house as the house shown in the documentary Inheritance.

Amon Goeth standing outside the house shown in the documentary

In the photo above, Amon Goeth is standing on the PATIO outside the WHITE house, not on the upstairs BALCONY.  Note the open door on the left side of the photo which identifies the location as the ground floor.

In the movie Schindler’s List, which was based on a NOVEL, Amon Goeth is shown on a BALCONY, as he shoots prisoners at random in the Plaszow camp. In the movie, the balcony overlooks the Plaszow camp; this scene in the movie is pure fiction. The WHITE house, where Goeth lived at that time, did not overlook the camp.

Scene from the movie Schindler’s List

The photo above is a still shot from the movie. It shows Amon Goeth shooting from a balcony which overlooks a quarry.  This scene is pure FICTION.

The photo below shows Ruth Irene Kalder, the mother of Monika Goeth, standing on the PATIO outside the WHITE house, where Goeth was photographed with a rifle in his hand.

Ruth Irene Kalder standing on the patio outside the house where she lived with Amon Goeth

Note the doors in the background, which clearly identify this as the patio where Amon Goeth was standing with a rifle.

These innocent photos, plus the trial testimony of Helen Hirsch, were twisted into a fictional scene, shown by Stephen Spielberg, in his movie Schindler’s List.

While the Plaszow camp was in operation, Amon Goeth was investigated by Dr. Konrad Morgen, a Nazi judge, and as a result, Goeth was arrested for stealing goods from the Plaszow camp.  He was not arrested for shooting prisoners from his balcony.

If Goeth had actually been shooting prisoners from the WHITE house where he was living at that time, he would have been executed by the Nazis. If he had shot even one prisoner from his balcony, Ruth Irene Kalder would have instantly left him; she was a former movie actress, who was said to have resembled Elizabeth Taylor.  Kalder had been working as a secretary to Oscar Schindler when Schindler introduced her to Goeth.  Schinlder, who was a good friend of Goeth, was arrested at the same time as Goeth, because Schindler had been storing the goods that Amon Goeth was stealing from the Plaszow camp.

In the fictional movie Schindler’s List, the investigation and arrest of Amon Goeth are not mentioned.  He just disappears from the movie and nothing more is said about him.

In spite of all the evidence to the contrary, the fictional story of Amon Goeth, shooting prisoners from his balcony, lives on. It is one of those “events that never happened, but are true,” as Elie Wiesel famously said.

The movie Schindler’s List should not be shown to school children because the movie is fictional.  I previous blogged about the fictional aspects of Schindler’s List here.

If any readers of my blog still believe that Amon Goeth shot prisoners at random from his balcony, I can’t help you. You have been so brain-washed that you are beyond help.

  2. I spoke to the “Second” Helen a few years ago. At first, she was hesitant to talk to me, but she opened up a little bit to me. I shall not share what she told me about Amen Goethe. I will say, that the last thibg she says to me was, “Be kind to people” I’ll will treasure, forever the gift is was to simply hear her voice.

  5. This is the first day in my life that I have read your article and I have already noticed a blindingly obvious fallacy in your assumptions. Yet I see that you’ve been posting comments for up to two years after you posted the article and you *still* haven’t mentioned this same obvious fallacy? A fallacy that I noticed less than ten minutes after the first time I ever saw the article? This tells me you haven’t done your research properly, to put it mildly.

The blindingly obvious fallacy is this: in what you say about the photo of the real Goeth holding a rifle, you note that the photo shows him on the patio of the white house, and not on the balcony. You have jumped to the unfounded conclusion that that single photo tells us anything either way about which house he shot people from, or whether or not he shot from the balcony of any house. That photo, just by itself, tells us nothing either way; it’s just a photo of him holding a rifle outside a house. There is no proof that at the time the photo was taken it was meant to represent where he did or did not shoot people from. I don’t recall anyone ever claiming that the photo was taken just before or just after he shot someone. How do you know that it wasn’t taken under a completely different set of circumstances that have no direct connection with his duties at the camp? I’ll bet you can’t even prove what date the photo was taken.

Of course, this shouldn’t surprise me, as you’re also the person claimed to have watched Shindler’s List “several times” and never once noticed the main villain of the movie being hanged, even though the scene is quite obvious. That’s yet another example of how abysmally poor your research is.

You are referring to comments that I made, in answer to readers, who commented on a blog post that I put up several years ago.

I don’t want to defend every word that I wrote 2 or 3 years ago. I have written over 1,600 blog posts and I can’t remember every word that I wrote and the source of the information. Sorry, but I don’t have time to debate with you. I’ve moved on, and I suggest that you do the same.

Us academics research and fully analyse evidence on all sides of the argument before coming to a conclusion. Your arguments in your article/blog are inconsistent, poorly researched without any strong evidence to back up your clearly biased conclusion.

            • When I first started traveling, in 1995, the first place that I went, was to England. My daughter was a professional landscape designer and her expertise was in designing “English gardens”. We were both shocked and horrified at how rude the British were. We were also disappointed in the English gardens that we saw. The attitude of the British was “I’m better than you. I’m British and you’re dog shit.”

  6. One question to the person writing this blog…… where you there at that time to see Amon not shooting from his balcony or patio, you make it seem as though you were there? The following is a quote from Helen Joan, who ACTUALLY Lived with Amon as his slave made…

The following quote is the words of Helen Sternlicht Jonas in her interview with Aleisa Fishman:

“When I arrived in Camp Plaszow, I was assigned to clean barracks. At the third day, a tall SS walked in the room, and he was Amon Goeth. At the time, I didn’t know who he was. But he looked around and he said to the woman that was in charge of us to send me to his house. And I really didn’t know what a brutal man he is, but he was a madman. He was a madman. He always, from the balcony he watched the camp, and he’s standing with the little machine gun through the window. He said, “You see those dumb heads? They’re standing, doing nothing.” He says, “I’m going to shoot.” And you could hear shooting like hell. And I could hear him whistling a happy tune, like he did so well. And this face with such satisfaction! I can’t forget that. The dreams after so many years he’s chasing me, I’m hiding. Because I lived in constant fear, constant fear, just looking at him. He was barbaric.”

Seems like you the blogger can’t be helped as it seems you want to believe that Amon was actually somewhat good!

  7. You sound like any one of those 14-year old Nazi apologists posting on Youtube video’s. The book “Schindler’s Ark’ is NOT a ‘novel’ as you keep referring to it. I have actually read it, and it sounds like you have not. At least go and read the book. It is a researched non-fiction book written from survivor’s accounts.
Amon Goth did shoot people from the balcony of that house, there are several accounts. You couldn’t see into the camp from there, but Jews were marched past going to other factories in the morning.
The movie “Schindler’s List”is a dramatised account based on a true story as recorded in the non-fiction book “Schindler’s Ark”.
If you can’t understand that, you really shouldn’t be allowed to have a blog. I’m sorry to tell you that. Give it up.

  9. I hate to tell u this.. but i know a child of a some who was at that camp and told her daughter that he would shoot people from the balcony. .and that he shot at her and someone pulled her to safety behind something. I’m not sure why people like you keep saying this didn’t happen. I don’t understand how u can sleep at night.. knowing that all u do is try to make people think this horrible thing never happened. It’s kinda funny how people like u can try to say this never happened. . One more thing u say that is total bs.. why would the nazis care if he was shooting people.. what makes u think that they would kill him for that? Do u really think they would care … wait u probably think that they didn’t muder 6 million jews and 2 or 3 millions more people just because..

  10. If this is any indication of the content of your blogs, you should find something else to do. Your blog is irresponsible at best. This man was a beast, I don’t care from where he carried out his executions of innocent people, a balcony or otherwise he was a vicious murderer. And his “saving” of any Jews was not because he cared about saving them, but rather because of his greed. One thing is definitely clear, he ALSO MURDERED more Jews that Schindler did, as Schindler didn’t murder any.

    Comment by Appaulled — July 30, 2015 @ 5:10 pm

  11. Yes the movie shows amon being hanged, May be you didn’t follow it till end.
You seemed to be brain washed yourself, and I find you helpless , pity that even after writing for so many years you can’t even be humble enough to support your point.
It is said that it was his strategy to exploit Jews by creating fear about him, and getting bribes to spare their lives.
Actually he saved more lives as compared to schindler only the motive was largely different.

    • I have seen the movie several times, but I don’t recall seeing a scene where Goeth was hanged. I have blogged about the hanging of Goeth at https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2013/09/21/amon-goeth-in-the-news-was-he-actually-hanged/

I also blogged about the trial of Amon Goeth at https://furtherglory.wordpress.com/2012/07/10/did-amon-goeth-really-shoot-prisoners-from-his-balcony-testimony-from-his-trial/

I seems that Amon Goeth was revived after he was hanged in the movie scene, and he was then put on trial, convicted, and hanged again.

      Comment by furtherglory — February 20, 2015 @ 7:01 am

      • You’ve seen the movie several times and you don’t remember Goeth being hanged?? That’s like saying you’ve watched The Wizard of Oz several times and you can’t remember Dorothy throwing water on the Witch and the Witch melting. The main “villian” in Schindler’s List was hanged and after seeing the film “several times” you still don’t recall it?

You did not actually watch the entire movie *any* of those times, correct?

It’s not long before the end of the movie, just a couple of minutes or so before it switches back to color and shows the real Schindler Jews putting rocks on Schindler’s grave, accompanied by the actors who portrayed them. The hanging of Goeth occurs only two or three minutes before that, if I recall correctly, and the hanging scene has definitely been present every time I’ve seen the film.

Quite obviously because I watched the film all the way to the end, as you apparently did not.

In the future, perhaps you could consider never again posting *any* comments about *any* film anywhere on the internet until you’ve watched it at least once all the way to the end. You know, the end, when they start rolling the credits?

  13. Amon Goeth lived in two houses: the Red Villa, and the Grey house (before the villa was built)

    Comment by BB — April 10, 2014 @ 1:04 pm

    • What is your source for this statement?

I did a search and found this information on the H.E.A.R.T website:

      Begin quote:
And now, here is the “Das Graue Haus” (the grey house) – (171). This structure was built before the war and when it became part of the camp, some very famous SS gentlemen lived there; Hujar, Zdrojewski, Landesdorfer, Eckert and Glazer.

In the basement was a prison cell – and not just any prison, but the real thing, a real chamber of horrors. There was a very narrow jail made of iron, just big enough to stand in, not unlike a wall closet that has been hermetically sealed.

There was also a narrow cell for lying in, into which it was only possible to gain access by shoving a person inside head-first. There was a special whipping bench, chains for hanging, ivory handled whips made of dried cow’s hide.

In addition to these particular auxiliary aides there were, of course, isolation cells, dark and wet with a small opening in the door through which water could be passed. In most cases, anyone who merited the professional ministrations of this particular institution did not emerge from there under his own steam – he was dragged out by his legs straight to the communal grave where others who had shared the same fate, awaited him: others, who had also been dispatched on the very same day

We have come to an intersection. Before us SS – street, which leads us to the “Neu Gelende” (new territories). Across its entire length stand the villas of the officers (117, 179, 181, 183), and the red villa (178) “Rotes Haus” that belonged to Kommandant Goeth.
      End Quote from http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org/othercamps/plaszow/bauplaszow.html

  14. I can say the same as was said by my predecessors.
It absolutely does not matter if he shoot or not from that balcony or he shoot people directly in the camp.
It was nazi bastard and he deserve what he deserved. I dont want to sound angry but you can spend your time better than this. It is very weird way how to say sorry or it is like you are trying to apologize for him.
So much time spent by finding out this?? Schindleŕs list was just a movie and even he would shoot by panzerfaust to group of people every single morning it would NEVER describes the cruelty and sleaze of this war.

      • What a silly comment. It’s totally unnecessary for any of us today to have been there to still know with absolute certainty that it happened. I wasn’t “there” when JFK was assassinated, yet I know for fact, without the slightest possibility of being even slightly mistaken, that he was indeed assassinated. I was not alive during World War II yet I know for a fact that war did occur. There are a gigantic variety of types of events that can be irrefutably proven to have happened without any of us having to have personally witnessed those events.

        Comment by John Reagor King — November 19, 2016 @ 10:52 pm

  15. i don’t think you’re understanding that anyone states Amon ‘s hung ’cause of shooting prisioners from his balcony, Amon was hung ’cause of crimes to the HUMANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the movie “Schindler’s List” revals facts about Amon that ‘re true, but it’s a movie, thou CAN’T state that it’s fiction and demand us to believe it not!! ‘Cause it’s a movie it doen’t needs to be exact to the real life, the main idea of the movie is to show how cold, cruel, and terrifily does the jews were treated!!!!!!!!!

    Comment by MEL — April 28, 2013 @ 7:29 pm

    • I agree with you. Most information on what happened will be anecdotal and there is no way Steven Spielberg could know every exact detail. Amon Goeth killed many Jews and participated in the Holocaust, which is why he was executed. I don’t understand where the lack of clarity is coming from, this should be obvious. For what was fictional in the movie, similar things were most likely happening somewhere in the concentration camps. Of course it wasn’t 100% accurate, but the story itself is true. Oskar Schindler saved thousands of Jews. The movie makers were just trying to tell this incredible story, and of course, as with any movie, there was some artistic license taken. That’s why it’s a movie, not a documentary. It’s not like they completely turned it into something else (cough, cough, Michael Bay – Pearl Harbor). The person saying this shouldn’t be shown in schools because it has some inaccuracies is being ridiculous. The Holocaust happened, and this movie will make them aware of the horrors that occurred.

At the other hand he was in the SS (but not in the figthing elite, with its tough selection in the early stages). also on his wikipedia page a weird part about having paying jews for their execution in polish srzereberzyn (someting like that) ..
