YORKVILLE, IL – Holocaust survivor Steen Metz shared his story with sixth-grade students at Autumn Creek Elementary School in Yorkville.
Metz was 8-years-old on Oct. 2, 1943 when he was taken from his home in Odense, Denmark. He was arrested with his family and deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp for being Jewish. In the camps, Metz said there was constant hunger, brutal living conditions, and death all around.
About 15,000 children passed through the Theresienstadt concentration camp and most were killed. Metz was only one of the less than 1,500 who survived.
His father died of starvation after less than six months in the camp. He spent about 18 months in the concentration camp with his mother before it was liberated on April 15, 1945 by the Red Cross – only one month before the scheduled launch of the camp’s newly installed gas chamber. Metz returned to Denmark and completed high school and business college in Copenhagen.

GASKAMMER AT THERESIENSTADT
At the beginning of 1945, the Kommandantur ordered the Jewish Elder Council in Theresienstadt to erect specially closed storage rooms in the H II, near the Bauhof and Leitmeritzer Tores, in the casemates, and to erect a duck pond in the Ravelin. The nature of the re-commended construction and the more and more perplexing news of the gassing of the Jews in the East aroused the distrust of the construction engineers. On the basis of an analysis of the so-called ventilation system, which was to be installed, the construction workers charged with these works came to the conclusion that they were pipes through which gas could be introduced into the chambers.
One of these technicians, the engineer Erich Kohn, went to the Jewish Camp Elder Dr. Murmelstein, told him what it was about, and declared that the Jews would not be used in the installation of these facilities which could serve for such a purpose. After much discussion and an exciting night, Murmelstein went to the commander’s office the next morning and asked him about the project. Commandant Rahm let engineer Kohn come to the Ravelin, and asked him if he really believed it would be the construction of gas chambers. Kohn answered that he believed this was th casel. Then Rahm drew revolver [probably pistol.sic], and Kohn received footcicks in his butt before the eyes of the assembled workers and with shouts was sent away.
